Episode 116 – Potion Brewing

About a week had passed since the mock battles and the plant gathering trip, and I was currently at Elf’s Tears.

“Lewin, you’re stirring a little too fast. Try slowing down a little bit.” (Grandma)

“Yes, yes. That speed is good.” (Grandma)

As for what I was doing here in Elf’s Tears… I was currently learning potion brewing, which was something I had been wanting to do for a long time.

When I told the grandma about this and asked her to teach me, she immediately agreed to it. After I agreed to cover the cost of the potion ingredients and help out with various chores at Elf’s Tears, I started receiving lessons in potion brewing during the afternoon.

“After adding in the Killer Bee Honey, start stirring immediately. Then, put the extracted Medical Herbs in.” (Grandma)

“……Uh oh, your timing was late. It’s another failure.” (Grandma)

“Man… I didn’t think it would be this difficult. I thought it would be like cooking, where you could just sit next to me and tell me the recipe and I would be able to make it…” (Lewin)

After arriving at the entrance of the rundown inn, I saw Kirty leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. In addition to the potion brewing lessons, there was another thing that changed in the past week. Somehow, Kirty was now teaching me in the evening as well. I didn’t really understand why, but the day after I came back from plant gathering, Kirty started showing up in the evening and, from then on, had started teaching me every evening onwards. Of course I welcomed this development, but I definitely felt a bit worried for Kirty, given her schedule and position.

After work was over she would come to teach me, and then, early the next morning, she’d come and teach me yet again. I couldn’t get over the fact that somehow she ended up having an even harder schedule than I did. I didn’t know why she was going so far for me, but Kirty had become a person on par with the grandma in my heart. They were both people to whom I felt that I absolutely had to repay the favor in the future.

“Lewin, you’re back, huh? It looks like you’re properly restraining yourself from excessive training― that’s great.” (Kirty)

“You said that it had negative effects, so I couldn’t bring myself to continue doing that. Kirty-san… is your health alright? Because you’re always teaching me, I feel like your lifestyle has become pretty tough…” (Lewin)

“I’m doing fine. All I have to do is stand here and watch as I teach you, after all. Besides, seeing you grow every day is a lot of fun for me, Lewin.” (Kirty)

“Alright, as long as you say so… Thank you for teaching me so early in the morning and so late at night. I’ll definitely repay this favor to you one day!” (Lewin)

“If that’s the case, do your best to get stronger and beat me in a fight in the future. I hope to lose to you one day, Lewin. That’s all I want from you.” (Kirty)

“Yes! I’ll become stronger so I can defeat you some day!” I replied cheerfully with a smile. After that, our evening training session began. In order to live up to her expectations, I swung my sword more meticulously, focusing on one sword swing at a time.
