Episode 151 – Equipment Effects

Inside of the box was a set of flashy clothes and shoes. Next to that was an impressive-looking dagger, and on top of the folded set of clothes was a slightly rusty silver ring.

“Grandma. This… is it really alright to borrow all of this?” (Lewin)

“Of course. I won’t be using it anymore after all. I would be glad if you were to use it, Lewin.” (Grandma)

“Thank you so much. I’ll treasure it dearly!” (Lewin)

After expressing my gratitude, I excitedly picked up the items and tried them on. My own gear still only consisted of the Lightmetal Chestplate over my cloth garments. I changed out of the tattered cloth garments into the gorgeous set of clothes and shoes and placed the impressive-looking dagger next to the Angry Wolf Dagger at my waist. I couldn’t feel anything different yet, but what kind of effects would this equipment have? I kind of expected the grandma’s equipment to have some kind of amazing set effect like [Attack Damage Reduction] or [Magic Damage Reduction].

“Ooh, looks like the size is just right.” (Grandma)

“The fancy clothes and shoes are extraordinary items that are both heat-resistant and cold-resistant, so they are able to maintain your body temperature in both extremely hot and extremely cold areas. And that dagger was made by a famous Priest. It’s very effective against Undead-type monsters.” (Grandma)

“Oooh…! They all grant excellent effects!” (Lewin)

“These items are all mementos from my adventurer days, so please take good care of them.” (Grandma)

“Of course! I’ll take good care of them so they don’t get dirty!” (Lewin)

It seemed that she had a lot of great equipment. In regards to the clothes that gave heat and cold resistance, it didn’t seem that essential since I assumed you could just put on more clothes or less clothes depending on the area’s climate, but… compared to the shallow breadth of my knowledge, the grandma’s words carried far more weight.

Let’s borrow these things and use them with great care.

Also… she didn’t really give any explanation for the rusty silver ring. It looked plain compared to the rest of the items, so it might not have had any great effects and could have just been the grandma’s keepsake.

“Grandma, does this silver ring not have any effects?” (Lewin)

“Kukuku. Good thing you asked! This ring is enchanted with a Perpetual Magic called [Wash]. It’s an exceptional item that allows you to wash your body anytime, anywhere.” (Grandma)

Hearing the grandma’s explanation, my jaw dropped. Keeping your body clean…? It certainly seemed convenient, but… perhaps the ring’s value was more in the Perpetual Magic it was enchanted with.

“It seems you don’t understand the true value of [Wash] just yet. Well, I’m sure you’ll soon come to appreciate it once you start traveling.” (Grandma)

“I don’t have much travel experience, so I probably just can’t imagine it well enough yet. I’ll take your word for it and use it gratefully.” (Lewin)

“That’s about it for the equipment, I guess. Well then… is it about time to depart?” (Grandma)

“…Seems like it. It’s already time for me to go.” (Lewin)

“I see. Looks like I won’t be able to see you for a long time, Lewin… I’m going to miss you.” (Grandma)

“Yeah… I’m going to miss you a lot too, grandma,” I said, forcing myself to smile.

The grandma smiled wistfully back at me. I had always felt indebted to her. She had taught so many things to me, who knew absolutely nothing about the world. If it weren’t for her, it wouldn’t have been strange for me to have died already. She always welcomed me with a kind smile, and I felt at ease every time I came to this shop. There was a part of me that felt like the image of this grandma that had always treated me so kindly was beginning to overlap with that of my dead mother in my heart. That was why I was always trying my best to take care of the grandma to try to make it up to my own mother who had already passed away.

But in the end, I had already made my decision to leave Grezesta.

“Grandma. Please take good care of your health, and don’t work yourself too hard. I’ll definitely be back one day, and, at that time, I hope to see you in good health.” (Lewin)

“…You too, Lewin. Take good care of yourself, okay? If you ever get tired of traveling, you can always come back to Grezesta. Even if everything is lost, I’ll let you work at Elf’s Tears. No matter what happens, I will always be your ally,” the grandma said with a warm smile, which made me feel like crying all over again just like I had yesterday. When the grandma saw that, she slowly walked over to me and hugged me lightly, patting me gently on the head.

Even if everything fell through, the grandma would always accept me… Just knowing that fact made me feel a lot better. After returning her embrace, I gently pulled away and confidently declared that she didn’t need to worry.

“Thank you, grandma. I feel much better now. I’ll be able to put forth my best effort knowing I can always fall back on you, so please cheer for me!” (Lewin)

“Yeah, of course. I’ll always be rooting for you from afar. Just go out there and do your best so you don’t leave any regrets!” (Grandma)

“Yes!” (Lewin)

Just like that, I parted ways with the grandma. Now that I was leaving, I realized all over again just how blessed I was to have so many supportive people on my side.
