Episode 38 – The Adventurer’s Guild’s Apology

….Alright, it was time for me to get ready to go as well. Hopping off the bed, I slung the empty backpack over my shoulder and left the room. I was still feeling a little unsteady since I hadn’t slept off all of the fatigue, but I planned to do as Ahmed said and go report the failure of the quest commission. Leaving behind the inn that was nicer than the rundown inn I usually stayed at, I headed to the Adventurer’s Guild.

By the way, it seemed that Ahmed paid the hotel fee after she left the room earlier. She really was so cool no matter what she did. With slightly shaky steps, I managed to arrive at the Adventurer’s Guild. It was the same Adventurer’s Guild as always, but I was a little nervous and curious as to whether [White Feiler] was there or not. I didn’t do anything wrong in this incident, but I was a little afraid that they would come to pick a fight with me since me returning here could be a problem for them. Well, Ahmed said she would do something about this situation, so I decided to believe in her. I… really am relying on others way too much.

While feeling gratitude for Ahmed, I walked to the reception desks with a self-deprecating smile. Was I supposed to report the quest failure at the desk for reporting quest commission completion status? I decided to just go there for the time being.

“Welcome. This is the reception desk for reporting quest commission completion status, how may I help you?” (Receptionist Lady)

“Actually, I came to report that I put out an escort request and was abandoned in the middle of it.” (Lewin)

“Abandoned… in the middle?” I am terribly sorry to hear that.” (Receptionist Lady)

With a surprised expression, the receptionist lady bowed deeply in apology upon hearing that. Honestly, I didn’t really want to hear an apology from the receptionist lady. The receptionist ladies were just mediators who acted as go-betweens at the counters for the Adventurer’s Guild, and had done nothing wrong in this matter. When I was working at the Healer’s Guild, there were often times when I had to apologize for the mistakes of others that had absolutely nothing to do with me, so I totally empathized with this receptionist lady’s situation.

“No, as the receptionist, it’s not like you did anything wrong here. You don’t have to apologize, so please raise your head.” (Lewin)

“The responsibility of the adventurer is also the responsibility of the Adventurer’s Guild. As the one who arranged for them to take this job, I was technically a contributing factor to this mistake.” (Receptionist Lady)

“No! It’s really fine, so please just raise your head.” (Lewin)

“Thank you very much for your consideration. I would very much like to hear a detailed record of the matter, so could you please give me your number tag for the quest commission?” (Receptionist Lady)

“The quest commission number tag, is it? Please wait just a moment.” (Lewin)

I handed over the number tag to the receptionist lady, and after she confirmed the details of the commission, the adventurer party assigned, I began to tell her what happened just like that time with Ahmed.

As I spoke, the receptionist lady’s face was gradually growing more and more blue, and when I finished telling the story, she seemed like she was on the verge of fainting.

“…That’s everything regarding the matter. Umm… Receptionist Lady-san, are you okay?” (Lewin)

“I’m really, really sorry about this matter. P-please wait just a moment while I call the Guild Chief over!” (Receptionist Lady)

When I was recalling that desperate near-death experience as if it was a distant memory, the receptionist came back. Behind her was that same bald staff member who helped me with the plant selling transaction that one time.

“Thank you so very much for your patience. I’ve brought the Guild Chief.” (Receptionist Lady)

“EH?! You were the Guild Chief?!” I exclaimed in pure astonishment. The man ran his hand over his shiny, bald head with an awkward expression.

I thought he was just a normal staff member who specialized in buying and selling operations though…

“Didn’t mean to fool ya, Lewin. My bad.” (Guild Chief)

“Huh? You remember me?” (Lewin)

“I accept your apology, but I have two conditions. Is that okay?” (Lewin)

“Ah. I’ll do whatever I can for ya.” (Guild Chief)

“Thank you. The first condition is that [White Feiler] must never get close to me or approach me ever again.” (Lewin)

“About that… you can rest assured that you won’t hafta worry about that in the future. Deliberately leaving behind and abandoning your client ain’t a simple quest failure, but a crime. After the country receives a report of this incident, they’ll get arrested and receive due punishment. I’ve already arranged for someone to investigate their whereabouts.” (Guild Chief)

I listened to this reply that far exceeded my expectations in mute amazement. Arrested…? And punished? Honestly, I thought they would only receive a heavy penalty and be banished from the Adventurer’s Guild, so this was pretty shocking news to me.
