Episode 52 – Contract Proposal

TL Note: Sponsored chapter (1/3). Thanks Jessie!

Surprisingly, the words that came out of Porta’s mouth were an invitation to their party. I totally didn’t expect to be invited to [Iron Gear], but nonetheless these words were uttered by Porta, who seemed like the least likely person to say such a thing.

“H-hey! Porta! How could you just randomly invite him to our party?!” (Byrne)

“I mean, Lewin is a great guy, he’s around the same age as us, and he even has a useful Rare Skill! Plus, since he said he was formerly a Healer, he should be free right now. It was just too tempting!” (Porta)

“I understand what you’re saying but… we have to get Nina and Lyra’s input first.” (Byrne)

“Porta, thank you so, so much for your offer.” (Lewin)

“Huh? Does that mean you’ll join us?” (Porta)

“No… It’s a little tough for me to say this, but there was already an adventurer party that I set my heart on joining, so unfortunately I will have to turn down your invitation.” (Lewin)

When I told Porta this, he looked really disappointed. At that point, I decided to suggest an idea to him.

“I’d like to propose something else though… how about we make a contract?” (Lewin)

“Contract…? What kind of contract are you talking about?” (Byrne)

“Just like the conditions that our current quest commission has, per this contract I would recruit only [Iron Gear] to escort me on these periodic expeditions in the future. If [Iron Gear] accepts, they’ll receive the rewards for each successful escort of course.” (Lewin)

When Porta heard that, his face brightened as he understood my intention. Byrne on the other hand, was still thinking it through with his mouth slightly agape.

“That sounds like a great idea! Let’s make it happen! Even if we won’t exactly be in a party together, we can still build a good relationship with each other through this exclusive contract, right?” (Porta)

“Yeah. In fact, based on your performance on the escort for this current quest commission, I was already going to give you guys a bonus completion reward. But, if we go through with this contract, I was planning to keep the escort reward fixed at 4 gold coins for each future expedition.” (Lewin)

Hearing this, Porta jumped for joy. He usually had no expression on his face, but there was this side to him too, huh?

“4 gold coins?!! That’s on the level of a D-rank adventurer’s reward! Are you sure about this, Lewin?” (Porta)

“Yep. As long as you guys do a good job with escorting, even if the reward is 4 gold coins, I can still make a large surplus.” (Lewin)

“Wow… This is so great! I really appreciate it!” (Porta)

As Porta and I were about to shake hands to seal the deal, Byrne, who was spaced out trying to understand what we were talking about, came alive and wedged his way between us.

“Hey! Explain it to me in a way I can understand! Also Porta, don’t go signing contracts that you can’t even understand!” (Byrne)

“I do understand. Lewin has offered us an extremely good deal. For the sake of [Iron Gear], please don’t get in the way of this.” (Porta)

“What do you mean by that!? You’re always so quiet, but as soon as it comes to money, you immediately get all worked up.” (Byrne)

“….My bad, alright? If we left the money matters in my hands, I know that our party would crumble in less than a day. Just… explain it to me in a way that I can understand.” (Byrne)

“Byrne, it’s okay. Later, I’ll give a simplified explanation in front of Nina and Lyra, so for now we should probably continue on with the plant and herb gathering.” (Lewin)

“Ah, alright. I didn’t mean to get in the way, so let’s continue onwards for now.” (Byrne)

“I’ll explain it to Byrne, so please continue with your plant and herb gathering for now, Lewin. Also, I gotta hand it to you for coming up with such a wonderful proposal.” Porta said with a refreshing smile.

Alright, back to it. Man, Porta’s sudden invitation really surprised me… Hoping that the other three would smoothly agree to the exclusive contract, I focused on gathering plants and herbs, appraising each and every weed in a systematic manner.
