Chapter 13: Chapter 13: The Demon’s Gate

Montana opens her eyes and sees a familiar ceiling, she looks from side to side as she realized where she was, The Hospital Wing. She holds her forehead as it began to ache and hears a sudden knock at the door.

Maid: Princess? My lady, are you awake?

Montana: Y-yes  am, you may enter

The maid then enters with a cart full of her supplements, she drags it beside her bed and tells the princess which ones to take accordingly. Later on, Montana asked her for a glass of water and took the supplements that she needed at that time. While drinking, Montana sees someone phase through the wall in the corner of her eye, causing her to choke on her drink. The Maid asks if something was wrong as Montana tries to gain back her composure. After drinking her pills, the maid said her farewell as Montana waves to her from the bed. After the maid left, Montana calls out a name as she looks outside the window asking if he could slide it open for her. The boy then stares at her blankly as he decides to do as asked

Montana: So... How is it?

But the boy never answered, instead he looked away from Montana and began admiring his surroundings. The young girl giggles  thinking of how he was being unusually silent, taking his attention at the same time.

The Second: W-what?

Montana: Oh nothing... I just never thought this sight could make one so speechless

The Second: It’s just been a while...

Montana: Yes, I know

The two continued chatting when suddenly the boy saw something in the corner of his eye, something familiar that he failed to notice due of their conversation. He went back towards the window and got on top which confused Montana, she stood up and went to grab him but instead the boy leaned over the edge and creates a Scythe, which he used to hook himself, giving him a better view. Montana, who was clueless, decided to ask what was going on. But after a moment of silence, he points towards the thing which caught his attention.

The Second: I-It’s a gate! Why is a gate here?

Montana: A gate? What gate? The Palace gates?

The Second pulls himself back using the Scythe enters the room, almost at the exact same time the door opened. Montana then realized that it was her mother, who came after hearing of her awakening. She was surprised that the Queen came, but was even more concerned if she could see the boy carrying a Scythe at the corner of the room. But before she could even do anything, the Queen closes the windows. She then headed towards the desk and began making them tea. Montana was afraid, not knowing how to explain the situation

Montana: I-I’m sorry, thi-this is just a misunderstanding

Queen Elizabeth: Hmm? Sorry my darling I didn’t quite hear you…Here, now drink this before the two enters the room

The Montana was confused. She didn’t seem to notice the boy, who began admiring the tea set which she took out. She bows her head, apologizes and while doing so, noticed that she was wearing the ring given to her from the other dimension. Only then did she realize, that only she could see the boy, using her mother as proof. Two people then entered whom the boy followed  beside them. Montana was concerned of this, being the only person to see The Second in the real world felt weird to her

Queen Elizabeth: Now now, please keep Montana’s state in mind before doing… things

Kai: O-ohh y-yes, certainly your highness...

The Queen then smiles at him, teasing him knowing how he felt/ Montana didnt want to let her mother to continue on so she decides to break the silence.

Montana: Sorry… how are the others?

Kaiden: Everyones alright… A-actually… We came here to say our goodbyes

Queen Elizabeth: Ahh~ I see, im glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay, I will leave now so the three of you could have your private time~

Montana: Mom—

Kai: Hehehe-

Kaiden: Thank you, your highness...

The Queen leaves which gave the three a breather. Montana and Kai started laughing for being so formal and polite. Kaiden on the other hand, stops the two before they could attract unwanted attention. Montana sits back on her bed as the two sat beside her. The three began chatting when the Second suddenly appears again. Montana hoped he left for good, but the boy was too curious of the twins

Kai: Yeahh so now we were asked to tranfer there by our Grandfather

Montana: A-ahh i see... Wh-where was it again?

Kai: Its an Academy from a land far from here

Montana couldnt focus on the conversation they had, seeing the Second doing certain things while talking distracted her from time to time. While Kaiden was talking, the Second was flying upside down, staring straight at them at a sitting position. Montana didnt notice that her gaze getting more and more taken by the boy, not until Kaiden who started noticing told her after getting tired of it

Kaiden: Sorry... Is there something wrong?

Kai: Montanaa.... Montanaaaa~MON!

Montana: Y-yes? Sorry… what were you saying?

After a few moments of silence, Kaiden decided to break it down to her.

Kaiden: Are you okay? Are you still tired?

Montana : Noo, no... Not at all, I was just…

Kai: Just?

Kaiden: Okay then, if you really are listening what were we talking about?

Montana didnt know the answer which worried her, when the boy suddenly teleports right beside her. She was surprised, but managed to regain herself as he whispered at her ear.

The Second: The Academy

Montana: What?!

Kai: What?

Montana: Ohh uhh.... Eherm, The Academy right?

Kaiden: Which room did we say we were going to stay?

The Second: It’s a trick question

Montana: Y-you never said it

Kaiden: Uhuh....

Kai: Why are we gonna transfer?

The Second: Because they spread word for different Kingdoms to gather

Montana: B-because they asked for a Gathering…

Kai: thats right, but whats our purpose there

The Second: They didnt say

Montana: I dont remember you telling me...

Kaiden: Hmm… Since I saw you look out the window earlier…Whats that black thing?

The Second: A woman on red, your brother and that Knight you’re always with went there by the way.

Montana: It’s a rift right? Scarlet and the others went there

Kaiden: Huh.... I dont recall talking about them... Or the rift

That was it. The moment where Montana knew she messed up. She looked beside her as the boy started to laugh hysterically. Only then did she realize why he was gone for a while, for he went to the Rifts site. Only one thought came in her mind that time "Ughh i wanna kill you"

Montana: I uhh.... remembered it from the Rogue’s story

Kaiden: I see... Are you not surpr-

Kai: WELL! that’s enough, we didn’t come here for an investigation.

Take care of yourself Mon, dont mind him hes just getting old

Kaiden: Whatd you say?

Kai: Guess we gotta go hahaha~ bye Mon see you soon!

The boy started running, leaving her room while his twin tries to catch him from behind. Montana on the other hand, was giggling until after the door closed. After a while, Montana noticed that the boy was laughing with her, which caused her laughter to stop. The Second only noticed this when she was glaring right at him. The boy started laughing awkwardly while Montana stood up from her bed and walked towards him, which caused him to move back until he hit the wall. But Montana still got closer

The Second: Uhh... Montana-?

M-Mon? Youre being really weird right now

Montana stopped at arms length and glares at him. Which scared the boy, knowing that his power hasnt come back, she clearly had more power. Not only because of the effects of his emblem, but also because of the ring his brother, The First, gave her.

Montana: If...

The Second: AHHH—wait wait!!! ohh uhh yes?

Montana: You even think about doing that again…

The Second: D-do what again?

Montana (coldly): what?

The Second: O-kayy okay I get it

Montana: Will you do it again?

The Second: N-no, ma’am

The angered Princess drags him by the ear as she heads outside, only letting him go when she entered the Dining room. When Dain suddenly enters, panting after fighting against the beings from the Rift. He sat down and relaxes his body.

Montana: So it was actually true? The masked man's story?

Dain: Well I dont know what those things are, but theyre definitely not nice

Montana: Where are the others? Scarlet and Leo?

Dain: Scarlets supposed to exit the gate, Leo wants to get stronger so he asked to continue alone

Montana then realized that Leo mustve felt weak, that hes training himself to become stronger. The siblings chatted while eating. When suddenly, Scarlet arrives after forcefully opening the door.

Scarlet: Hoo~ that was a nice warm up

Montana: You seem to be having fun with this, do you fight monsters back in Khalam?

Scarlet: Ohh? I thought they’re everywhere, although these ones felt weaker from the ones back at home

Montana: Is that so?

Scarlet: Or maybe its cause of the thing… you casted to me back in the…

Montana: Hmm?

Scarlet: Now.... With that aside... let us feast!

The three continued to eat then later separated and went on with each others lives. When the sun came down, and dusk started to fall. Leo came back, he calls for his helper and heads to the public bath. When he finished, he goes out wiping his chest and hair with a towel when he sees the Princess at the lobby, noticing that she had her arms crossed as she looked at him, he knew what was about to happen. The mood went dark, but Leo decides to break the silence

Leo: Im back

Montana: I can see that

Leo: ....My apologies for being absent the whole day

Montana: And?

Leo: For everything ive done wrong

Montana: ... Why’d you go alone?

Leo: Were you worried?

Montana: No, why would I... but—

Leo: Then there isn’t an issue, right?

The atmosphere went silent, Leo knew he said something wrong. After thinking of what to say, he lets out a sigh and gets closer

Leo: Im sorry, that was rude of me... But you have to understand…I have to get stronger

Montana: You know I can protect myself

Leo: It’s not about that but even so, I’ll still protect you. It is my duty to be your shield

Montana: Well then how about my training

Leo: I’m training myself so you won’t have to fight

Montana: I… want to fight, it’s not your decision to make.... I’ve decided, I’ll join you in the next gate

Leo: Even though the gate is only the Rifts entrance it is still too dangerous

Montana: I know of the dangers, don’t think of me as a child now.

Leo: I will not allow it

Montana: I’ve already decided. And, I don’t recall having to listen to you...

Leo knew that Montana wouldn’t listen especially now when she already had set a goal. So he lets out a sigh and looked at her, seeing her eyes with such determination made him think that it would only tire him if he was to continue arguing with her. So he ruffles his hair, annoyed, and agrees with the princess. But knowing the risks, he gave her some rules that she would have to follow when inside the gate.

While the two continue their argument, Dain continues to find a way to open the case. After finishing their discussion, the Princess heads to her room as she notices someone familiar outside the corridor’s window. After confirming it was the Second walking at the roof, she opens the window and calls out to him. The Second smiles back when he sees her, as she waves at him to go back inside. The day ends with Montana sleeping and The Second at her room's terrace sitting at the edge, admiring the night sky.
