Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Evolution

Several days have passed since then. The state of the Queen has been stable, thanks to the twins who not only took care of her daily needs but also acted as her shield. The Royal servants have been excused for protection, limiting the Queens interaction with others was what Zetien believed is best. On the other side, in a medical station at the Lab laid Yvonne who was taking her daily examination. Dain was located in the room above her, checking her status as the scientists below perform their duties. After taking her examination, Yvonne heads back to her room while being guided by the Lab’s security. While heading there, Dain stops them saying that he would take over them as he guided her back to the room.

Yve: Hey! Do you really need to do this?

I’ve gotten more control over myself, you know

Dain: C-come Yve, lets talk while on the way

Labguard: Blessings to the Royal Family

The guards then leave, giving the two the privacy they needed. While heading to her room, Yve looks back to the guards, watching as they march towards their station.

Yve: I don’t get it…

Why do I need them?

Dain: Hmm? A-ahh no…

You don’t need them, you understand right? its just for-

Yve: Yeahh- I get it

Dain saw that something seemed to be on her mind, this made him realize how wrong his words were.  He knew the young Yve didn’t need to be treated as such. But even so, they had to follow the Senate’s decision knowing what happened during her first outbreak. The silence they had made him regret it even more but seeing the young girl hesitate so suddenly before entering the room gave Dain the opportunity to make a move. The two then stuttered as they called out to each other at the same time. Yvonne started choking, for she couldn’t speak out the words she wanted to. She decided to cut off the conversation as she decoded her room’s passcode. Dain on the other hand, stopped her just before she could enter.

Dain: Y-Yve… I-uhh…About your passage

Its uhm, in progress… I just wanted you to know

Yve: Passage? What for?

Dain: I made you a passage, its to let you go out

Yve: Wh-what? Aren’t I supposed to be kept hidden?

Until Lady Sophies return I mean…

Dain: You aren’t some beast to be kept hidden

Its because of Mont’s request, and I thought you’d want it too

Yve was shocked, but she felt happy because of the thought of roaming the Kingdom’s streets. She suddenly felt anxious, thinking of what the people might think of her. Yve shook it off seeing as Dain was observing her. Although Dain already thought of this, he then comforted her saying that they’ll be there knowing it would be hard at first. Yvonne suddenly embraced the young lad, who was too shocked to move. She then took her arms off, apologizing for her sudden boldness. After gaining the young girl’s permission, they entered the room and chatted.

A few hours passed when a ring suddenly went off from her room. Knowing it came from the door, Dain went and spoke, seeing his sister, Montana, who came to invite them for Lunch. The two then began laughing, while watching her through the screen while she was arguing with the guards. They tried to take her back because she came to the Lab without going through proper process. Dain opens the door and stops them before creating a scene. The three then goes back up after gaining permission from the Senate and the Palace. After reaching the Dining Room, they were surprised to see their Father, King Roderick, and a certain Knight. After exchanging their greetings, they waited for their food to come.

Leonhardt: Yes, my King…that is the case

King Roderick: Are you certain that she would be safe?

Leonhardt: Ofcourse my liege

Montana: What’re you talking about?

King Roderick: The young lad is asking for permission

To clear the gate, instead of clearing those which escape

Dain: Its possible thanks to the samples;

We can predict their evolution and adjust to it

Montana: Do you really think we can do it?

King Roderick: Ask the Tyrene girl

Montana: What would happen to the rift after we clea-

Montana was cut by a loud thunder. The group then went up heading towards the window seeing as the servants were gathered there. They were shocked to see the rift, which seemed to have grown. Clouds gathered in its zone, with dark smoke which seemed to have taken over the sky, covering the rift’s zone. After the Kings orders, all of them go back to their places. Later on, Dain explains how surprised he is, claiming that their research predicted the rift’s next evolution to be days later. After finishing their food, Dain excuses himself and took Yvonne back to the lab. Knowing that something bad might happen, Leo stood up after eating just enough food, to ensure that his movements would stay sharp.

Leo: Please excuse me, I will go and confirm the state of the rift

King Roderick: Very well

Montana: Don’t enter without me

After a while, Montana follows the unit after taking the Blade. When she reached the team, she lets out a sigh in relief, as she began preparing to enter the gate. At the face of the Rift’s gate, the unit stops as Leo began to speak, asking if they were ready. They knew that what was once inside the rift has changed, so they breathe heavily, thinking of what they might encounter. Montana then speaks up saying that they’re never ready. When they enter, they encounter demons that were once located in the deeper parts. Knowing that they’d fought them before, they attacked with confidence. Later on, four-legged beasts appear, with hides stronger than steel the unit had their difficulties, but they continue to cut them down as some of the men take the dead beasts back, as samples for Dain to examine. While stalling for their retreat, the number of wolves rushing them increased, which made it difficult for them to protect some of their men. Knowing that they wouldn’t last long, Dain called out for a faster retreat, telling them to leave what was not needed. But to their surprise, the left flank of their group was already taken over. The demonic wolves then feasted for their blood but were stopped by Leo when he took a spear and lighted it with a torch. Watching the wolf he hit as it burned fast gave him an idea, as he quickly picks up  the torch to drive the beasts away as survivors leave the gate.

Leo: Fire! They’re weak against Fire!

The group then took the torches of their fallen allies and lighted them up, chasing the beasts away. Just before they left, Leo asked for a Scientist to help him light the entrance. The scientist then asked for help as they took containers of oil, covering the entrance. Seeing that only Montana and his Knight were there with him, Leo tells them to run back, saying that he’ll light the entrance before leaving. While hesitating at first, Montana gives in when Leo’s Knight grabbed her away from a beast she had killed. While going back, a large spear was fired towards the Princess, but it was stopped by The Knight who took the hit. But Having thrown the spear with so much power, the tip pierced through the shield, hitting his shoulder.

Montana was surprised by this, but had to act seeing as the beasts were rushing to him. She stood in front of him cutting down as much as she could, but was surprised when the Knight grabbed her, asking her to leave him. Ignoring what the Knight had said she focused on killing the beasts as one of their spears was thrown to them but was once again blocked by the Knight. He pulled the Princess and took another hit, taking the bite almost pierced through his skin, but was stopped by the Princess after killing it.

Montana: You damn beasts!

Royal Knight: Princess, you must retreat

I will hold them off as much as I can

Montana: Forget it! Im not leaving

Leo: Leave! Hurry!

Seeing as they were struggling so much, she decided to listen to Leo but dragged the injured Knight with her. After reaching Leo’s position, she laid the Knight down and called for help as she helps Leo hold the Gate. She then sees a tall demon, with an exoskeleton made out of hard material. Montana then realized that it was the one who threw multiple things at them. Knowing this, she tells Leo to light the entrance up. But to her surprise, Leo was barehanded having lost his sword after leaving it on a wolf’s body. The tall demon was heading towards him, and just before it could hit Leo, Montana cuts its arm only for her to watch it regrow. The demon then tries to stab her, but was stopped when Leo blocked it. Knowing how dire the situation is, Leo shouted to Montana, giving her permission to use the Blade.

Montana: I call to this sword, hear my desire

Time seemed to freeze as the scene changes, similar to that of the Vision Realm, and a boy who was confused at first called to her, asking what she wanted after processing what had happened.

The Second: You look disg-

*sigh* What is your desire

Montana: Haahh- Help me fend them off

The Second: Is that it-

The boy then watched as she continued to cut them down, taking advantage of the Realm’s flow of time. He watched as she continued even though she was drained. The boy then sighs as he calls out to her.

The Second: Fine… Stop that, you look stupid

Montana: Wh-wha-?

The drained girl then turned her head, only to see the boy who had already disappeared. Thinking that he left her, she continued and stroked her sword unto another beast and feels its blood as it gets taken into the sword. As the scene returned, She then laughs realizing how wrong she was, the blood of the beasts she had killed started to run to her as she drives the sword deeper to a beast. Her wounds then began to heal, and her body become as light as a feather. She felt nostalgic and annoyed as she faces the demons

Montana: My turn

Montana then continues to cut them off with ease but realizes that the ones she killed started to stand up again. Thinking that she somehow failed to cut them off, she backs off to Leo and grabs him by the shoulder, making him grunt in agony as the aura heals some of his wounds, he then ran and took his sword heading towards the torch to light the entrance. To her surprise, the hollow bodies of the dead stood still, as if it was waiting for something. Another spear was thrown and was blocked by Montana, who started to get annoyed. “Such a pai-“

Just before she could finish her thoughts, she was surprised to see the dead as they started to rush the demon. Watching them fight against each other confused Montana, but gave them an opportunity to light the entrance. With less struggle, they manage to light the entrance and just before they could leave the rift, Montana shouts in agony, feeling as if her body was burning and voices started to shout in her head. Leo then came to her, injecting her with a serum, making her fall asleep. Countless people gathered after seeing the changes in the rift. They cleared the way as they watch in horror, as the others return covered in dark stains while some carried the Royal Knight and Montana, who were unconscious.
