The sound of a teacup being placed down echoed through the silence of the living room.
The three of us, Mahiru, Saya, and I, were sitting around the table. But for some reason, it felt awkward.
There are two girls in my house, and I was the only one until just this morning.
One is Mahiru Mitsuha, and the other is Saya Mitsuha, Mahiru’s younger sister.
“Let’s see, so you both enrolled in our school, right?”
“Yes. When I told Saya I was transferring, she insisted that she wanted to go there too.”
“Yes, I’ve always wanted to go to the same school as Onee-chan.”
Comparing them side by side, they look very similar in terms of eyes and mouths. But while Mahiru was energetic and cheerful, Saya’s personality was much different.
She seemed quiet, and although she was younger than Mahiru, she appeared to be more mature.
Incidentally, Mahiru is a little taller than Saya, but both of them were as stylish as the other.
—Rather, Saya is more partial.
“What’s wrong, Isshin?”
“Eh? No, nothing at all.”
I looked away from Saya, who was sipping her tea in an elegant manner.
“Isshin, are you nervous? Well, you haven’t really talked to Saya that much.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Indeed, I hardly remember playing or talking with her sister, Saya.
Unlike Mahiru, who was as active as a boy, Saya was probably more of an indoor person.
Saya looked down awkwardly.
“I’m sorry. I’m not as close to Isshin-san as my sister…”
“Ah, no! That’s not what I meant… It’s not like you’re bothering me at all because Saya… seems to have more common sense than Mahiru.”
“Isshin? I don’t like what I’m hearing.”
“Oh, come on, don’t be so hard on me.”
When Saya saw us arguing without hesitation, she giggled.
“Isshin-san. Onee-chan and I are looking forward to living with you!”
“I-it’s my pleasure.”
Saya bowed politely, and I hurriedly responded.
Unlike Mahiru, Saya seems to be a good, calm girl.
At one point, I wondered what I should say to her, but I guess there was nothing to worry about.
“Alright, now that we’re done with the formal greetings, why don’t we have lunch?”
“Oh, sure. I’m getting hungry.”
“Is that so? Then I’ll do you a special favour today. Isshin, can I use the kitchen?”
“Sure, but Mahiru, do you know how to cook?”
“Do you have a knife? I need it to be sharp.”
“S-sorry! That was a joke…”
“You know, you shouldn’t underestimate the girl power of an active JK.”
“Well, I hope you can… No, wait a minute.”
“You still have doubts? Saya, you know I can cook, right? I can fry an egg or cook sausage. Yeah, that’s considered cooking, right?”
“… Well, leaving Mahiru’s skills aside…”
I stood up and looked at Saya and Mahiru standing in the kitchen.
“From now on, the three of us are going to live together, so why don’t we make it together?”
I was blunt, but Mahiru and Saya nodded with a smile.
“Yes!”
“Sure, let’s do that.”
From that day on, the three of us, Mahiru, Saya and I, began our life together.

“Isshin, wake up!”
“Uwaa…”
A weekday morning in my room.
From my slumber, I opened my eyes in a daze.
The scene unfolding before me made me jump out of the covers and roll out of bed.
Mahiru was standing there, wearing an apron over her school uniform, and in her hand was a ladle.
She looked as if she had just come from cooking.
“Hey, what are you doing in my room without permission?”
“What do you mean? I came because you didn’t wake up.”
“Not that! I mean, what about my p-p-privacy…!”
“You’re exaggerating. Didn’t I used to wake you up every day like this when we were little?”
“No, when are you talking about? I mean, that’s true, but…”
Although it had been seven years since Mahiru and I had met, it didn’t take long for us to get back to the same old relationship. Because of this, I was able to talk to Saya more naturally.
The only problem was that Mahiru’s actions were still the same as back then, but now that we were both in high school, we couldn’t expect everything to be the same.
After getting rid of Mahiru and changing clothes, I complained while having breakfast.
“Goddamn it, you ought to be a little more careful.”
“You’re my childhood friend, so you don’t have to bother. Oh, Isshin, bed hair.”
I gently turned away Mahiru’s hand, which was trying to touch my head without hesitation.
“You know, I’m not a kid anymore. I can take care of myself.”
“Dame!”
“Why not?”
“Because Isshin’s father has asked me to take care of his son.”
“What do you mean that father…?”
Saya looked on happily as Mahiru and I argued tirelessly every morning.

“Fufufu, you two are really close, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I guess so. We fight a lot, don’t we?”
“Yeah, we do.”
However, most of the time, we just forget about it by the next day.
Suddenly, Mahiru looked at the time.
“Oh, time! Isshin, hurry up and eat. And your tie is crooked!”
“I got it!”
I was rushed by Mahiru, so I hurriedly shoveled my breakfast into my mouth.
The three of us have just begun to live together.
This had become my daily routine these days.
*
It was still early spring, but it was a strangely hot day.
I arrived home drenched in sweat, having been forced to run outside in gym class.
I had to take a shower, or else I would feel like c**p, so I opened the bathroom door with a bang and went rigid in the same position.
There was someone else in there.
“What?”
“Huh?”
It was Mahiru.
At that moment, she was wearing a thin camisole, her socks were off, showing her bare feet underneath, and her hand was on the skirt’s hook on her waist.
My brain stopped for a moment and understood the situation of her being in the middle of changing clothes.
“Get out of here…!”
“What? Wait!”
I hurriedly turned my back on the spot.
“I did not look at you, okay?”
I was so frustrated that I said something strange.
“No, hurry up and just close the door!”
“You should at least lock the door before you go…”
“What? Ah… It was your mind that peeked in, wasn’t it?”
“I didn’t do it on purpose…!”
I closed the door with my hand behind my back.
I hear a plop and something like a towel hitting the back of it.
I sighed as I walked into the living room.
Still, I wondered what this strange feeling was.
Was it because it was unreasonable for Mahiru to come into my room without a care in the world but complain when the situation was reversed? No, I was more concerned about the fact that Mahiru was upset. Of course, it was only natural since she was in the middle of changing clothes.
“Oh, I get it…”
It wasn’t just the bad timing that made me embarrassed.
I was also embarrassed because Mahiru’s appearance had definitely become more feminine than it was back then.
She had become more attractive, more gorgeous.
*
Another day.
I found Mahiru standing tall in front of the kitchen cupboard.
“Hmm…”
“What are you doing, Mahiru?”
“Oh, Isshin. I was going to use that, but I can’t reach it…”
She seemed to be trying to get the mixer box on top.
“Hey, is there a stool somewhere?”
“Let me get it…”
I stood on my tiptoes and stretched out my arms.
I grabbed the box with my fingertips and lowered it slowly so as not to drop it.
Then handed the mixer box to Mahiru, who remained puzzled.
“Here you go. There’s a lot of dust on it, so you’d better take it out to the yard and open it.”
“…”
I suddenly noticed her gaze. For some reason, Mahiru was staring at me intently.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“What? No, nothing. It’s just that… Isshin has grown taller…”
“That’s right. I mean, how many years do you think it’s been since then?”
“Haha, that’s right… Still, I’m impressed…”
Mahiru fidgeted oddly.
“You were a guy, after all, Isshin.”
“What?”
“No, nothing. Thank you!”
Mahiru left the kitchen in a hurry.
I saw her off and scratched my head, feeling a little awkward.
“Maybe she does care about those things.”
Seven years have passed, and both Mahiru and I may have diverged from each other’s point of view.
However, there was one thing that I am sure will never change.
I’m sure Mahiru felt the same way.
It was the promise that we made to each other.
