One ongoing project that I had was to be looking at all the different types of enchantments. There often wasn’t anything good, but new ideas came every so often, so I persisted. This has continued for a few years with only a few things being found, for example, a heating enchantment using just heat, not fire. Or the most recent and obvious one, time freezing. Interestingly enough, I found this particular enchantment in a freezer, and looking at the runes, they applied time as usual, then took the passage of time away, leaving an indefinite freezer. These freezers, instead of icing everything for coolness, just made all the heat or cold stay in the item. You could even put in a hot meal and take it out next week at the same temperature.
Finding this out, I looked back on a few of the hints I had before, like the heater. It didn’t burn, like all fire does, because there was no fire. The enchanter took away the fire part, and left the heat. You don’t make the properties, you just take away the ones you don’t want. I ran back and forth a few times from my workshop/training room, the kitchen, and my room, before locking myself in there for… some time. The tests I did worked almost from the start, but they took almost as much as all my others at the same time. I spent that time just optimizing my new enchantments. I didn’t sleep, spending about half of what I later found was six days making improvements, and when I couldn't find anything else to improve, I went to a new one. In the end, all of my enchantments cost about half of their original price, leaving me with much more headroom to work with, though I don’t know what to put on with that headroom.
The rest of the time, I found out how to make a phone. This had been bothering me for a while, the lack of quick communication, and I wanted a way to keep in contact with my parents too. The design I went with was basically a slightly curved bar, and had a slot for a rechargeable crystal in the back. There were four sliders, each with four positions, for 256 combinations, as well as an off switch and an accept button. I made one area in each side to put a tiny portal, an id rune basically consisting of a spelled name and a random number inside of a rune of rank, so you could have Hanna 1 <হণ১> spelled, inside the rune for commoner <খ>, and have Hanna’s Id. Each Id was unique to a phone, and each phone was tailored to a buyer, so portals could link to individual phones which would glow in bursts for one minute or until accepted, and if not, they would not be connected. The portals were linked to tiny ring-shaped gems marked with their Id and receiving or transmitting runes, and the portals attach to the opposite rune, making a very complicated playground tube phone. Both gems have a piece missing, and the switches insert a sliver into each ring with the desired destination. You can get the person’s contact by asking them for these slivers, and put it in through a slot with an extra button under a cover on the side that opens it.
I only made enough for our family and to ship to the capital for the crown’s idea on it. I’m hoping to get word back soon. I left them with instructions, but I don’t know how easy they will be to follow, and I don’t know if the idea is even needed currently. My parents seemed extremely optimistic though, and very happy, saying that we would become tycoons. I only wanted easier communication, and I hadn’t planned on making these hard to get. Plus, each phone comes with 10 of the Id slivers; I just wanted everyone’s communication to be better.
During all of this, I got a bunch of little dings, but I was so far into my work and idea trance that I barely registered them. I had done this before, it was a major part of why I was chosen for my last job on Earth, being able to go into a trance-like state and see things from an order of magnitude more angles. The only problem was that I never was able to control it. I decided to check all of my notifications now that I was back to normal.
