I could hear the sound of the crows flying above me, waiting for their next meal as I slowly walked down to the executioner’s block. People were lined up on all sides screaming their profanities, monster demon killer my hands were bound my mouth dried from the lack of water unable to speak, after a walk that seemed to last forever I arrived at the steps of the wooden platform slowly walking up the steps I saw the King Tobias De Ville the oldest of my cousins still alive that is, along with several other members of my family, but my stare was focused on three very specific individuals among the group, my mother and father as well as my brother. My mother was crying. Perhaps they were tears of joy to finally be rid of the proof of her husband’s infidelity. My father looked at me with that same cold, disgusted glare as he always did, and my brother? He didn’t even spare me a glance.
It seems I had gotten distracted glaring at my family since I felt a rough tug on my shoulder. “Place your head on the block, prisoner.’’ The guard then shoved me down as I laid my head upon the block, closing my eyes tight so I wouldn’t have to see the crowd screaming in glee at my execution.
This was how I was going to die betrayed once again by the people I called family. And how had I spent this one time ticket at existence, you ask, crawling and scraping at the feet of the people who tormented me all my life trying desperately for even the smallest bit of love from any of them? I pushed my body to its limits training so I could fight for them; I bowed my head and kissed their feet whenever it was asked of me and for what? Nothing, nothing at all. It was never enough, no matter what I did. I was always the bastard daughter who couldn’t even use magic, was even pretending to care too much for them. Was it too much to ask for affection? I suppose it doesn’t matter now. My torment was finally over, I would finally be free.
I opened my eyes again when I heard my cousin’s voice boom out into the crowd, “Madeline De Ville! For the crimes of tampering with dark rituals and the attempted assassination of a member of the Royal family I Tobias De Ville, the Sun of the Empire sentence you to die, would you speak a final word?” as he spoke i readied myself for my fate, Tobias had always liked to show off so no wonder he would decide to execute me personally.
In a quieter voice that only those on the platform could, Tobias let out one last remark. “I thought not.” Then he raised his sword high into the air, bringing it down upon my neck, the cheers of the crowd and the chirping of the crows fading away as my head was separated from my body.
Then there was only darkness. Was this death? Could I finally be at peace? I allowed myself to relax for what felt like the first time in years as I floated in that infinite expanse. But then my peaceful rest was interrupted by a sweet voice.
“Do you have regrets, my child?”
I looked around frantically when I heard the voice. Why is someone else here? I thought this was supposed to be the eternal void. “Where are you? Show yourself, whoever you are!”
“That’s not how you should speak to a savior. Now I said, do you have any regrets?”
The invisible voice was getting on my nerves. Now what did it know about what I’ve been through. “Why the hell should I have any regrets huh!? What could that life ever give me that? I’m content with my life”
There was silence for a moment before I heard the voice burst out into laughter. “Hahah, your not lying are you? Well then, think of this as a learning experience then, and a little advice: if you die with no regrets, then you have not truly lived.”
“What the hell does that mean? Answer me, dammit.” I would never get my response because soon after I felt myself falling like one of those nightmares you have and just like any nightmare I woke up to a world of pain sitting in a dirty alley my stomach growling disoriented I crawled my way over to a broken shard of glass picking it up in my tiny hands at I tried to make out my appearance, I could feel the fear building in my stomach as I saw my reflection, the same golden hair covered in muck and the same golden eyes, I was back to my child self though how far back I was I didn’t know. As the shock was flowing through my body, a single word left my lips..
“Shit.”
