"I'm going on a date with Susan tonight!" I said with excitement, puffing out my chest and nose.

Eva next to me just rolled her eyes and looked at me with a bored expression. "Are you high right now?"

I clucked my tongue. "C'mon, Eva. Don't be like that. Your best friend finally have a date, and she's the prettiest girl in school. Be a little proud." I didn't understand why she always doubted me.

"You must have done something to her, right? Wait, you're blackmailing her, aren't you?" chirped Eva recklessly.

"Don't spit out nonsense!" I shouted. Started to get annoyed by her act.

Eva shrugged as if it were nothing. "Either that or the world will end sooner."

"So now my happiness lead to bad things happening?" I sighed, trying to be positive. "I invited her normally, without forcing her, and she did the right thing. I mean, I don't want to brag, but if a handsome, kind man like me asked you out, you wouldn't be able to say no, right?"

"So that's it? You bribed her? Although i knew it, i still think that's pathetic." Again, Eva jumped to an absurd conclusion.

"You never listen to what people say, do you—"

BRAKK!

"Get out the way, losers."

I tumbled down and groaned. It hurts! What the heck?

When I saw who had done it, my throat closed up, and I couldn't speak. Johnathan Dexter, the star of the basketball club, with his annoying—friends Derek, Fletcher, and Blake.

"What? You have something to say? "asked Blake, the biggest of the group.

I dropped my head and shook my head hard right away. Because of the vital role they played in the school's athletic success, teachers routinely ignored their erratic behavior. They also came from powerful and wealthy families.

So even if you find a way to punish them here, the results will be worse outside. So it's best not to get in their way.

So even if you find a way to punish them here, the results will be worse outside. It'd be best to stay out of their way.

"Hey!"

Yet, unanticipated elements will undoubtedly lead us astray.

I looked up, stood up quickly, and tried to stop Eva from doing something stupid.

"Hey! I told you off, you jerk!" Oh my! Eva did it again! She'll never stop making my life difficult, will she!

Look! John, which had already gone a long way, went back. He is smiling and seems interested. "Did you say something?" John started to talk.

I shook my head and tried to make this stop. "No, we didn't-"

"Apologize now!" Eva yelled, unaware of the situation. . Oh, come on, I am trying to save your life here.

John snapped, "I don't get it, why would I do that?" He smiled wider.

"You intentionally knocked Harry out, right? Do you want him to get hurt?"

Oh, come on, Eva. Don't go crazy with that sort of thing. Look! People are now looking at us, and some are laughing.

Argh! I want to go out, dig a deep hole, and hide in there.

"Oh, yeah? Why not ask the person directly?" John shouted as he suddenly walked up to me. My shoulder, which he was holding, shook right away as a warning sign. "Is the blame on me? Or yours?"

I took a deep breath and then looked at Eva and then John. These two bastards. In this situation, any answer I gave would be wrong.

In this situation, any answer I gave would be wrong.

However, I would instead be humiliated than risk my life for nothing. "I-it's on me. I didn't see the road, so I ran into you."

"So, who should apologize, in your opinion?"

Before I answered, I took another look at Eva. She made a frown when she saw how I was acting right now. Surprised? Should I be the one to act that way? Fuck her opinion "M-Me. I am on blame."

John gave a shrug. "So, Miss, are we good now?"

Eva shook her head in disgust, turned around, and left.

All women, indeed, are baffling mysteries.

"There is no way I would take a date in that old van."

Dad, however, was adamant. "You aren't the only one who has something planned for tonight. I can't just cancel it. More so, you just told me like five minutes ago." He gave a shrug.

I was a little annoyed by the pretend ignorance. But I realized that another reply would simply make my hopes seem like wishful thinking, so I tried again with a more subtle approach: "Listen, Dad. Tonight is a big deal for me. The night could have been the most important of my life. That girl could be your future daughter-in-law, the woman who carries and gives birth to Dave, Anya, and Jack, your soon-beloved grandchildren. Do you want to destroy that lovely dream?"

"There is no way I would take a date in that old van."

But Dad laughed so hard that he knocked his hand against the table. "Don't put too much hope in it. From what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if it only lasted one night."

"Okay, you're acting like a jerk now." I didn't understand why everyone didn't believe that we really loved each other.

"I'm so sorry. I still can't, though."

"Please. Just reschedule your appointment. How important is it, really?"

After a moment of looking at me, my dad shook his head again. "Once you can't, you can't. Also, I'm not the type to break promises, you know that, right?"

I bit my tongue and didn't say anything. No response. I know. That's who he is.

"Besides, you're not the only one who has a date tonight."

"What?"

*#*

Damn old man.

A date? He doesn't remember his age, does he? At that age, he should think about how to go to church more often, save money for retirement, and make me happy.

Where did he get that crazy amount of confidence? "Your late mother has been gone for almost ten years. As a man, you should get it."

Yes, I understand. I knew he was a big, selfish, lustful bastard.

As a result of that irresponsible act, I had to decide whether to cancel this important first date or let go of my pride.

Look, I'm not the kind who cares about how I look, but it's essential to make an excellent first impression.

So, I chose the most reasonable middle ground: we decided to meet in person at the place we'd already agreed to.

On second thought, that wasn't a good idea. Susan would consider me a heartless, clueless, and incompetent man. She said yes without many questions, thankfully.

I thought it was her being polite, but she came even earlier than expected. Tonight she looked absolutely stunning. Wearing a black denim jacket over a white T-shirt, white shorts, and white sneakers.

She looked up from her phone and asked, "Why you dressed like that?" A frown formed on her face.

Suddenly, I became acutely aware of how stupid I looked. Just so you know, I have no sense of style at all. I guess that's one of the many reasons why people sometimes look at me funny.

The hell with them.

I mean, the fact that there are people who spend hours trying to figure out which shirt goes best with this pair of pants and that pair of shoes is still a mystery to me.

Time is money! You should do as much as you can with it!

Well, that's what a young teen who hasn't hit puberty yet would think. So, I'm not sure what I'm doing right now.

Because I don't have much time, I decided to dress simply because a first date is essential. Significant. Formal.

So the only outfit I could think of at this moment was a white shirt tucked in black work pants and loafers. I was going to wear a suit, but thank god I changed my mind right away.

I smiled in nervousness. What should I do now? I'm so stupid! That lovely dream is over now. "If you want, I can go home and change."

She shook her head and let out a sigh. "Forget it, let's just go now. It's too late now."

So, with awkward steps, we started walking through the busy streets. I had made a few plans for us, like going to the park or having dinner at my favorite one-star restaurant.

It's pretty and classy, right?

Well, save your cheers for when it's over. Because at that time, I'll be making something even more special: a formal declaration of love.

On the other hand, the fact that there had been complete silence since before made me uneasy. Could it be that Susan not having a good time with me? Does it have to do with how I look? Or how we met? I should make a few things clear. "Susan-"

"Hey."

We both looked at each other and stopped. I was the only person who laughed out loud. "You're up first-"

"No, you first."

Once more, we both talked at the same time. Isn't that a sign of something? I hope it means something good.

Susan crossed her arms, turned away, and said in a firm voice. "Go ahead."

I bit my lip and gave her a shrug. "Okay. Look, um... I-I... apologize."

Susan made a face. "For?"

"For everything. Because i made you walk and get tired. Just so you know, I had everything planned out. But my old man messed up everything and-"

"Hey! Hey!" Susan walked over and gave my shoulder a pat, which made me shake even more. She got too close! Because I had a lot on my mind, I didn't pay much attention to the strange look in her eyes. Susan looked away for a moment, then she looked back at me. "This is wrong."

"Sorry?"

She left the place. "Honestly?"

I felt a bad feeling from her tone. But it was compassion that made the moment what it was. I nodded my head.

"I don't know if you're really stupid or if you're part of their stupid plan," Susan said. She gave a shrug. Stupid plan? Theirs? "I'm no longer interested. This joke is no longer funny. To hell with you guys! I'm leaving!"

What? "Hey." I moved and, as lightly as I could, took her hand. The arm, though, was able to move out of the way.

Susan turned around and yelled in a loud voice. "Don't you dare." Her look was full of disgust for no good reason.

What did I do to her that was so bad? "I... I apologize. I promise I won't do this again. The next time, it won't be like this. So, please don't go yet, all right?"

Susan just shook her head and clicked her tongue. "Don't ever come to my face again," she said in such a cold voice. Before she left, she called out to me in a way that made no sense. "You fricking scumbags."

I watched her fading figure with mixed feelings.
