The night was over and the sun was again smiling up on the sky with its round face, warming up the earth within its embrace. Not a single cloud could be seen across the majestic sky that looked like a vast blue sea, allowing the rays to reach every corner of this monster-less paradise filled with birds, deer, and grass.
The road path found led Saori out of the dense forest and to a beautiful green plain. It was the light at the end of the tunnel. It was like she managed to escape hell and reached paradise. It was the scenery she had been looking for these past two weeks. It was hope!
Glancing back at the fearsome and breathtaking mountain she had to cross in order to survive made her feel uncomfortable. She had the same feeling as in the beginning when the nightmare started. It was like the mountain had eyes and was watching her every move.
“Anta, I truly hope you had not become a corpse that will spend its eternity rooted in that dark forgotten place,” the girl thought.
It felt to her like she spent an eternity fighting for survival in those mountains filled with unimaginable curses, but in reality, it had been less than two weeks.
The guilt of having been unable to save anyone was hard to bear. It was slowly going deeper and deeper into her mind, which could eventually lead to suicidal thoughts, but not for now. She had a place she had to be.
The Bird Valley Village sign with an arrow pointing in its direction came into view. As she got closer, she saw the road path going down in
between the paddy fields. At the bottom of the valley, there was a woman planting rice on the flooded land, not far from the only house that came into view.
“Is that you, Anta?” the girl shouted from the top. Her voice was filled with joy and hope.
The woman didn’t seem to have heard or noticed her.
Saori had a plan. After chuckling to herself, the girl took a few steps back and jumped all the way down from a great height.
“ANTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!”
Having finally heard her, the woman turned towards the source of the noise and saw Saori not far from falling straight on her.
“A touchless ghost-like see-through shall be my body!” Anta quickly cast a magic spell to avoid the deadly impact by making herself untouchable similar to a hologram.
Saori fell right through her and spun on the ground several times till she smashed a wall with her back. The heavy impact made the closer window shatter to pieces and fall over the girl. Luckily, she didn’t get hurt.
Being now upside down with her legs up, Saori smiled innocently.
“Can you stop jumping around like a freaking mindless beast?!”
“Ha, ha! Come on, gran! We can fix that. I’m just happy to see you.” The smile on her face was genuine.
She gathered power into her hands and pushed hard to jump on her feet and get closer to the old woman, then hugged her tightly.
“I’m glad you survived. What would I have done without you in this world?” Tears filled her cheeks.
“Get off me! I can’t breathe.” Anta was trying to push the girl away, but the difference in strength made it impossible.

“You are dirty and you stink.”
“Glad to see you too.”
After a few moments, when the beast girl finally calmed down, the woman said: “I understand that you are the only survivor.” Her voice was low.
“I’m sorry about everyone, and especially about Paul. He—”
“Screw him. I knew all along. I did my research on possible spies in the village and I knew he became one at some point. I just hoped that he would use those powers to help us, instead of giving in to despair.” Anta interrupted Saori.
“I’m sure he still loved you.”
“Oh, I know. So did I,” she answered promptly.
“At least you managed to keep your body intact. I’m missing an arm and my vision as you can see,” the old woman added.
“I noticed.”
Anta turned in the direction of the wet paddy fields. Her voice took a serious tone that the girl had never heard before.
“In time, you will get stronger under my guidance. Your power will reach standards far beyond what you have now and you will be able to rival the witches.”
“I was hoping you would say that. Please offer your expertise and transform me into a witch-killing machine. I promise not to disappoint,” Saori kneeled on one foot behind Anta and bowed her head.
“They took everything I had left. They are monsters with a human form capable of horrors beyond imagination.” As she said these words, the woman stretched her hand towards the sun and made a fist in front of it as if trying to squeeze it.
“Send a message, gran! The beast is coming for them and will devour each and every single one of their hearts. I have a pact that I have to respect, and I will do it with delight.” Saori said as she stood up and put a hand on the woman’s head in order to connect her to the inner beast.
For this one time, Anta managed to use her magic without needing to recite or write anything. She easily connected to the whole world using the power of Alma. Everyone on the planet could now hear the two of them.
A grin spread across both their faces as they said in unison, “We will climb out of any dark hole, any pit, and any kind of hell. We’ll return stronger every time with an unshakable will to fulfill our prophecy. Not even the gods themselves will stop us.”
As the intensity of the wind increased, a third voice joined in towards the end, and that voice was Alma’s.
“*We shall not find peace until all witches have been judged according to their deeds. You shall fear and you shall tremble. We are coming!*”
