About ten people were gathered in a circle in front of the story-sharing stand, both villagers and adventurers. This event was the main attraction of the festival. Year after year, people come here around midnight, sit down with a lit candle next to them, and try to stay through the terrifying stories told.

“This is my favorite part, lads. Better not chicken out and stay until the end.” A small framed man with a big belly said enthusiastically.

“Shut up, Maron. This time, my story will scare the shit out of all of you.” His nineteen years old, feeble-bodied, and curly-haired son, replied just as enthusiastically.

It was clear they both loved this part of the festival.

“Most people leave early, only the truly brave remain after midnight. Muhahaha!”

Saori was there, sitting among them, and ready to listen to people’s scary stories. She managed to calm down for now. Leyla was there too, but this time she was acting normally.

“Hey, kiddo. Since you are new here, I gotta tell ya… The saying goes like this…” The man coughed to clear his throat and continued, “If the candle beside you goes out first, that means you will be the first one to die among us, same with the second, the third, etc.”

“Stop, dad. You’re just trying to scare the newbie so you won’t be the first one to go home with your tail between your legs.”

“Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.” Everyone at the stand looked at the new girl that suddenly started laughing, “So you think I’m easy to scare? I smile in the face of evil, I hunt, and I kill.”

Looking at Leyla, Saori scratched the ground with her claws and smiled menacingly.

“What’s her problem?” The receptionist thought.

“All right, all right. Why don’t we start, ay? I’ll go first.” Maron clapped his hands and took the initiative.

“There was once a boy that was scared of his own shadow, but he considered himself brave. To prove it, he told his friends he would go inside his grandfather’s stable at night. Nightfall came and he was ready to prove himself. It was pitch black inside, and the boy was close to peeing himself out of fear. That’s when two demonic red eyes appeared in the far corner of the stable and seemed to stare into the boy’s soul. Weak of heart, the boy fainted at the horrid sight.”

“Ha, ha, ha. What the heck?” Goro intervened, “This is not even scary. What is this? Late bedtime story for children?”

“You suck at scary stories, dad. I’ll go next. It was once—”

The youngster got interrupted by Leyla who started her story without prior notice.

Meanwhile, a small gust of wind almost blew out some candles.

“Uuuuuu, scaryyy.” Saori mocked the guy with curly hair because she saw him worried.

“Oh, you’re teasing me, pretty?”

“Yes, she is. She actually wants you to fuck her.” Leyla joined in, annoyed by the chattering.

“W-W-What?” the youngster blushed.

“Scummy—"

“Shhhht, show some respect. Someone is trying to tell a story.” Maron interrupted them and encouraged the receptionist to continue her story.

“My name is Nana, thanks for having me.”

Those were the first words of a strangely tall child seconds after she got pulled out of her mother’s womb.

She had little to no hair, just a few long and thick strands, about eight in total. Her face was pale and the skin abnormally white. The abnormally dark eyes were double the normal size and her forehead was the same.

But those were not the things that scared the doctor and the father the most. The newborn’s arms and legs were almost one and a half times longer than they should’ve been.

Due to giving birth to such a big child, the mother died shortly after.

Nana already knew how to walk and talk from birth, making the father’s life much easier. She was also growing up extremely fast. By the time she was three years old, she was as tall as a kid would usually be at six.

While she looked different, she was an obedient child, conscientious, a hard worker, and above all, playful. Therefore, her father decided to enroll her in a school.

However, the more she grew, the scarier she became, from both a physical aspect and a behavioral aspect. For that reason, despite the girl being his responsibility, her father didn’t want her around anymore, so taking her to a school also helped him ease his mind.

“Hi! My name is Nana, thanks for having me.”

At school, everyone tried to avoid the creepy child, even the teachers.

One day, unable to hold himself anymore, a boy named Botan asked for permission to go to the bathroom during class.

Nana was not at school that day, she was ill with a fever. So why? Why was he hearing that creepy voice again?

“Hi! My name is Nana, thanks for having me.”

Scared out of his mind, he turned and looked behind. Nothing. He looked up the stairs — nothing there either.

The closer he got to the bathroom, the louder that haunting voice became. Was it coming from there?

“Hi! My name is Nana, thanks for having me.”

How? How was he so unlucky? Last night he even had nightmares because of this new girl.

With his heart beating faster than ever before, the boy slightly opened the door to the bathroom and peeked inside. What he saw was something he would not live to tell.

Nana was chaotically wiping the bloody floor with Justin’s, one of their teachers, heart. The body of the man was open inside out with his intestines hanging to the sides, while the toilets were clogged with his bones.

“Nana?” The boy couldn’t stop himself from calling out her name.

“Heeeee. You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me! You didn’t see me!” The girl panicked and decided to hide inside the dead body.

Botan was too scared to move. His legs were not listening to him despite his brain screaming to run for his life. And that was not all, he couldn’t move his hands either. Trembling from head to toe, he was forced to watch the grotesque scene unfold before his eyes.

Justin stood up again and smiled, but this time it wasn’t him. It was Nana who took over his body.

What happened next is better to remain a mystery.

Botan disappeared that day and none ever heard of him again.

Eventually, the rumors reached the door of the girl’s father. It was believed that it was Nana who murdered the teacher that day, but there was no proof. Yet, the school didn’t accept Nana anymore, and it was the only educational center in the area.

The worst part was that, as her father, he couldn’t even trust his own daughter when she said she didn’t do anything wrong.

Days passed and the man stopped sleeping. Every night, after Nana fell asleep, he would lock the door to her room to feel safer.

He often heard heavy knocking on the door at night, but he just covered his ears hoping it will go away. It was like he was trapped in a nightmare and his only way out was to kill his daughter. But he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.

A week later, the door became frail due to the constant heavy knocking, so he decided to buy a cage to lock Nana in. It was not an easy thing to do as a father, but he resigned himself to this idea after a friend told him that his life was at stake, “Be careful, your daughter said she didn’t do anything wrong, but she didn’t say that she was not the murderer.”

Shivers ran down his spine when he was confronted with the reality of these words. They actually made a lot of sense.

On his way home, the father couldn’t even raise his head. He was deeply rooted in his thoughts about Nana and was staring at the ground intensely. Sweating as if he were an athlete during tough training, and shivering as if he were sick, the man rushed home with quick steps.

“Hey, Nana. I hope you were a good girl and drank the tea I left for you on the table.” The tea in question was chamomile tea that would make her fall asleep so he could cage her easily.

There was no answer and the cup of tea was untouched.

“Shit.” He hung his coat on the hanger, closed the door behind him, and carefully placed the cage on the floor to avoid making any noise.

“Please, sweetheart. Can we not play that stupid game of hide and seek again?”

“IT IS NOT STUPID!” The harsh reply came from a raspy voice.

“Ok, ok. I’m sorry, honey. Let’s play your game. But if I find you, promise me you’ll take a quick nap afterward, okay?”

“STOOOOOOOOOOOOP there, young lady! This is already scary enough for me.”

“What a wimp you are, son,” Maron said.

“So you’re the first one to drop out?” Leyla asked him, “That means you won’t have the chance to tell us your story.”

“Yea, I give up. I don’t care. It’s too much!”

“Ha, ha, ha. Very well.” His father laughed.

The receptionist looked at Saori who also seemed to be shaking a bit, “Scared, beast princess?”

“W-W-What? Obviously not…” The girl avoided her glance so she wouldn't see that she was lying. Saori was a terrible liar and had always been that way.

It was strange even to her how stories managed to scare her, but reality did not. Probably because compared to real life, she had no say in someone’s story.

Another villager, slightly older than the rest, asked out of curiosity, “Can you just tell us what happened after that? The overall ending.”

Leyla closed her eyes and cleaned her throat.

“Very well. Nana was eventually locked in the cage and taken to the village’s church where she was beaten and burned alive. But that wasn’t it, among the raging people that were throwing rocks at her, one man was standing still, smiling and watching. That man was Nana’s father, or at least that’s what everyone thought. But he looked strange, his eyes were bigger and much darker than usual, while his forehead seemed to be stretched beyond the normal proportions.”

A man from the church came and lit up a big fire two meters behind Leyla.

She slowly opened her eyes and continued, but this time, her voice sounded more excited than usual, “There is also a saying that if you meet Nana, you should avoid stepping into her shadow because if you do, you will freeze in place, and become completely unable to move. If you’re unfortunate enough and that happens, never ever scream. She will feed on your fear and enter your body. No one knows her current form or whether or not she is dead.”

Saori only now realized why the random stranger made the big fire behind Leyla. Some of the people already panicked, while others were confused. One thing was for sure, they couldn’t move and the menacing shadow of the storyteller was stretching out and encompassing everyone in front of the stand.

A massive grin stripped of any trace of humanity appeared on Leyla’s face. Her gaze was fixed on Saori.

“Hi! My name is Nana, thanks for having me.”

Once you get caught in her shadow, the only way out is to be saved by someone else.

The guild's horn resounded majestically in the distance, announcing great danger.
