A whole month had flown by, yet it feels like as if it were only yesterday. I summoned a well-renowned physician to check on the boy, and it was my joy to know that he was fine. I was informed that the boy wasn't particularly in the pink of health due to not being fed properly. A list of to-dos and don't-dos was prescribed, to return the boy's health to normalcy as quickly as possible.

A month since, the physician's treatment was showing rapid developments in the boy. The twig of a boy had gained a lot of weight, and at the same time exercised his body well to not get excessively bulk.

He has regular walks with me and also asked me to train him with some techniques.

I was never a great teacher, but I tried to help him regardless.

"First, you have to build a sturdy body. Normal walks won't suffice. You have to strictly build your muscles." I advised.

"Tell me what to do, so that I can get a sturdy body."

"You're only ten, you don't need a perfect body. But taking small leaps won't hurt. Why don't you start helping the maids with all the chores? That should help!" I tried to hide my chuckle whilst fooling the innocent boy. After all, he has robbed me of a thousand coins, I had to get its worth back by hook or crook.

"Sounds like a good idea, I'll do that from tomorrow!" He exclaimed unknowingly.

He trained diligently over the past month and he confirmed his intentions to try his best for the top spot. He jogged across the Institute's premises before the students woke up, and after they fell asleep. He also picked up a habit of lifting weights in my presence. The weights he lifted were nothing to laugh at, for his age that is.

I promised to teach him some fighting stances if he were to improve his agility, and as I could see him, he improved his speed significantly. He ran blazingly towards the other end of the long stretch of gardens and came back at a similar speed.

"How old are you?" I asked in disbelief. He was a persistent one who acted on his words.

"Why? I'll turn ten next month. I remember my birthday."

"How do you remember your birthday? Aren't you an orphan?"

"Well... I wasn't a baby when I was abandoned. I lost my parents at a young age and found myself in that alley." He answered promptly, with signs of remorse.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to,"

"No, you don't have to be. I've moved on from it."

I saw the boy from a different perspective from then. I assumed that I mistakenly took him in due to being drunk, but it became clear that it wasn't a mistake. I didn't regret giving him the money anymore, after all, that money won't follow me to hell, only the memories with him will.

"Wang Lei, I had this chain with me for as long as I can remember. I never married to have any children, and never passed it on as I was supposed to."

"Oh, I see,"

"Wang Lei, can you do me a favour?" I said, as I gently unchained the chain around my neck. "Can you hold onto this?"

He only smiled at my gesture and accepted the chain that came his way. It was no gold, but it was still precious to me as it carried memories. His silence spoke volumes, and I knew that he understood the meaning behind the gesture.

My newfound momentous life was gaining traction. I found joy in watching this child grow. I stopped keeping track of events like in the old days. It didn't matter anymore, I just wanted to live without worries for as long as I could.

Two months after his arrival, I chose to not laze around anymore. When a kid could train every day to keep his side of a petty deal that I didn't bother about, I felt like I ought to help. I began taking lessons, teaching him how to hold a sword, and how to move it.

I made sure not to expect him to run before he could walk properly. Martial Arts Manuals were things that I prohibited him from using, as I thought basics were important. Qi was something that I didn't discuss since I was sure that no kid in the tournament would use it anyway. If he were to inherit any Qi Cultivation Techniques, that would only prove to be lethal to the other kids if not used properly.

"You should position your legs properly, and hold the sword upfront when you confront someone! Practise your strikes, vertical, horizontal, and diagonal as well. Don't slack!"

I was strict with his training as I wanted my successor to ripen properly. And surprisingly, he only took my words seriously and tried his best to cope with me.

One fine evening, I called him over after his training and asked him if he was free for a stroll. He hesitated at first but agreed to an exchange of words with me.

"Wang Lei, you are training diligently and I appreciate that. You mentioned that your birthday was getting close, anything I can do?" I queried.

"No, nothing really. I wonder if I could get a real sword."

"A wooden sword is enough. You're barely ten of age."

"But I want one! It will help for practice!"

"When did you come to like fighting?"

"I saw some of the students here fight with weird dances, it was amusing to look at! I want to do that!"

"Fine, I'll get you one on your fifteenth birthday, when you're of those students' age."

"Seriously?! That is so far away from now!"

"Wang Lei, I must ask you, what do you dream to be?"

"I haven't thought about it." He faltered, "Maybe a martial artist?"

"We need to converse about your dream later, it is important." I sighed as we walked into the same old gardens, "You may go back and do whatever you were doing."

"I understand, I'll take my leave then!" He rejoiced and stormed away.

At first, the boy was cold and indifferent towards his surroundings, but now he has shown a brighter side of himself. I wondered what kind of a person he was.
