Charlie
Charlie Gunwin, certified supe punching stick. The nerdy four-eyed meat bag. I wanted to get rid of the names more than anything. Those freaks had no respect for me, their pea-sized brains programmed to just fuck and fight. They weren’t heroes, not in the slightest. They were putting on a nice little show for The Brother’s Code, and they fell for it.
I couldn’t really blame this organization for being desperate, though. They had a crisis in their backyard, one that needed to be taken cared of quickly before it got out of hand. Supes were running off a leash, and they wanted a method to keep those abominations under control. Contracts with promises did the trick, and surprisingly enough, they were keeping their word. I guess they had to, didn’t they? Because the last thing they needed was super heroes staging an uprising, turning the Serva campus into a graveyard. And it was my job to prevent that.
Any sane man would run at the first opportunity they got, but I didn’t, and for good reason. I saw a future at TBC. I knew I was destined for greatness, and that this company was my golden ticket to success! All I had to do was hang in there, just a little longer. They weren’t going to keep me as an intern. Hive processing wasn’t a routine affair. But the more days I spent in that dome with those sickening mutations, the more I started to lose hope. I was being fed excuses; staff shortages, experience barrier, you name it. Apparently only I was the most qualified to do the job. So I begged and begged for a replacement, so I could move to another sector and work on my field, and finally, Pamela heard my cries, and gave me a sorry sap to train. And then another… and another… but no one would stick around long enough to deal with a bunch of ingrates. Which meant that I couldn’t be replaced.
At some point, they had to consider my well-being… and if they didn’t I was going to make them see it! But, those supes beat me to the punch, and I was attacked through that so called protective barrier between me and them. I was left scared, but in fact, that was a blessing in disguise. Pamela finally shipped me out of the assignment, and gave me a nice promotion for my troubles. And now that I had full access to their sub labs, I could finally start cooking me up some well-deserved revenge…
Super human beings have no place in this world. Their intentions are selfish and impure. If it wasn’t for those god damn contracts, they would be just as bad as those super villains! But impressions and idols must be made out of them to keep the general public from losing their heads! And while ninety percent of them are clearly unqualified, The Brother’s Code made exceptions.
“Hell, I don’t care how desperate we are of saving! Making criminals fight other criminals isn’t preserving humanity! It’s a precursor for a full blown fucking war! A turf war!” And I for one would not stand for it!
Truth be told, I was the hero that The Brother’s Code needed! But of course, they would never see things my way. They loved their precious supes, even tried giving them the illusion of being their gods so they could be feared and respected. They wanted control, just like the Syndicate of Sorrow. They wanted power. All of them, too arrogant and prideful to nip this shit in the butt before the pot tipped over and burned everything down its path. So I took matters into my own hands. All I needed really was Warhead’s help. He gave me the missing piece to my formulation, and now I had the prototype to reverse the mutation effects on their DNA, reverting them back to regs, just like me.
I needed this revelation to spread… I had to find me a tunnel. The black market was a reliable source than any, and I was here in the corner of Bleaker and Marrot Street to seal a deal with a mysterious man by the name of Cody Grimes.
Over the phone, he told me his associate was caught by one of TBC’s teams when he tried exchanging two deadly twins in a crate. I remembered him describing a girl with a pair of creepy red and black eyes, like the ones on Aster. The camera footage also showed him two other girls and a guy in that fight. There was no doubt in my mind that it was Warhead’s team who had that assignment, and funny enough, it would be Warhead who’d put an end to all of this super human business.
I stood in the corner and coughed twice, with a heavy black coat over my back, and my stash in my pocket. Beyond the chilly evening fog, I saw two yellow lights flicker, and I approached it. After a few steps, I made a turn into the third alleyway, where I noticed my client leaning on the brick wall by a dumpster.
“Alone?” he asked me in a deep groggy voice.
“Of course. It was the only way you’d let me meet up with you.” I tried to tuck the nerves in my jagged voice, but truth be told, I was scared. I had no idea if this guy was a supe or not. And seeing as we were in an empty street in one of the evacuated areas, there was no one who would come to my rescue if this guy decided to hack me into peices.
To make matters worse, he wasn’t a big fella either. By the looks of it, he was topping at over six-four, and he looked beefy under the layers he had on. He kept the hood over his head as he approached me, and that was when I looked down between his legs, eyeing that dragon tail behind him.
“Oh geeze...” I croaked in a tiny shriveled voice, taking a step back from him.
“You have the supply?”
“It’s a sample I’d promised you, Grimes…”

“Then where is it?”
I nervously fished down my inside pocket of my coat, then handed the vial to him. He took it with his scaled fingers and inspected it under the moonlight. “Never been tested before, right?”
“N-no. That’s where you come in.” I chuckled sheepishly. “Think you can run a test trial and come back to me with the results?”
“And why aren’t you doing this yourself, again?”
“I, ugh… have a bad history with supes…”
He snorted. “You work at one of their regional headquarters, and you can’t weasel your way into tricking at least one or two of them?”
“Heh, I don’t think you understand how thorough those guys are. I mean, even if I could, it’ll trace back to me. Trust me, an outside source is best.”
“Ugh, I guess you’re right. I can tell just by lookin’ at ya, you’d be puppy chow if this thing turns sour.”
“I am seventy percent confident that it will work!”
“And the other thirty percent?”
“That it will possibly kill the target.”
He grunted.
“I know, it’s not exactly what you’re looking for, but that’s why we need to run tests! And if it does backfire, I am going to need samples from the victims.”
“You better hope for your sake it works as intended. Now, I will give you your results. Just as long as you can reassure me this miracle reversal serum is stable. And what you want in return—”
“To spread it like a wild fire!” I said with a huge excited grin on my face. “Trust me, we both have something to gain here. And I will try my very best to perfect these batches. After all, I have the perfect lab for it. I will not fail.”
