The Serva campus was approximately an hour from Roe City, and a few minutes more from Watch Square. Rynn had knocked out early, leaving Aster and her familiar watching television. I gave her an excuse of taking a late night training session with Dessi, and she brought it, my feisty sorceress giving me a kiss good bye before we left. Once Dessi and I left the apartment, we reached Watch Square close to midnight, the both of us finding a high rise to observe the site from. A few guards were spotted, but they were cops, Roe City’s finest. There were others in black suits, but I couldn’t tell their affiliation.
“They are state officials, falling under police authority. Seems like they sought after hired help after all.”
“Hey, are you sure you can’t mind read? That’s the second time you’ve answered my question before I even said anything.”
She smirked. “I highly doubt I got two specials for the price of one.”
I gave her a wise grin. “All right. We have about eight of them above ground. There’s no telling how many are patrolling down under.”
“I sense four, but don’t quote me on it. I’m getting strange feedback down there, blocking my reads.”
“To be honest, eight is light work. And they aren’t even supes…”
“Can you be sure?”
“I absorb energy, and I can also read them too. If they are strong enough, it comes off as some type of radiation, or projection.”
“There’s also a possibility that they are hiding it.”
“All of them? I highly doubt it. They are regs, which in itself, is pretty odd.”
“Well, TBC has been spread thin. And they aren’t allowed around the site, remember?”
“True. But you’d think that local law enforcement would capitalize on supes and at least monitor this area more responsibly. Supes outside TBC’s jurisdiction. This is still considered a critical hot zone. If this bank is on the Syndicate’s radar, I’d expect them to have a back-up plan around this basic level of protection.”
“So what’s the plan, Liam?”
“I need access. Spot the head officer and control him. Give the others an excuse to distance themselves away from the site. That way, I can sneak in and get a better look.”
“Are you planning on excavating?”
“If I do, it’s going to get loud, unless I get a pretty good source of power to start melting the ground below me. I rather not use my own and set something off.”
She looked back at me worried. “Liam, I know I said that I’ll support you all the way, but whoever is down there is untraceable. What’s worse, he’s the one blocking my reads, which means that he is alive. I sense him being in a type of hibernation, or some sort of hyper sleep. Which is probably why he hadn’t made himself known to us yet. We should consider that our fortune, and not disturb him, right?”
“We came here for information, Dessi. TBC has little intel on him. We have no clue how he got here or when, crash landing right under our noses in Watch Square, in the same city that I made my new home in. Not only that, he’d somehow hidden his location so well that a bank was built right over him. There’s more to his story that we need to figure out…”
“You seem unsure about something, too. Is his encasing keeping his energy signature unreadable?”
“Yeah… seems like it.”
“Then I say we should stick to observing until we know what we are up against.”
I looked over to her lovingly. “Dessi, I know you’re worried about my safety, but I’m also worried about yours. So far, I’m the strongest supe. If anyone could take this guy on, it outta be the source.”
She looked away solemnly. “These doubts… they are coming from an unclear foreshadowing. I sense a warning… nothing good will come out of tampering with this threat. Especially if you cannot gauge his threat class.”
Dessi was an oracle. I had to consider her insights into the future. Ignoring them would be ignorant and selfish, no matter how badly I wanted to solve this case. So I took her shoulder into my hand and made her a promise. “I won’t open it. I’ll just take a closer look. Deal?”
She nodded happily. “Thank you, Liam.”
“Are we close enough for you to work your magic?”
“I need to get two streets closer.”
“Come on.” We inched closer, this new cover a lot shorter than the high rise. But beggars couldn’t be choosers, Dessi and I making due with the low roof apartment complex two streets over. We hid behind a vent, the both of us watching as the guy with the red stripe on his shoulder began to march forward to his subordinates.
Mind control happened to be one of my favorite tricks in Dessi’s arsenal, and when she was within range, she performed it so well.
Until tonight.
It was easier for her to control the minds of enemies and villains. Maybe she felt some type of way invading the head of a police officer, because this right here was down-right comedic.
“Officer Jensen, I am absolving you of your duties, effective immediately,” Dessi said to the red head with the stuffy tie. Or should I say, Commissioner Garrison Hoper.
He looked devastated, the depth of his superior’s commanding voice telling him that he meant serious business. “B-but sir, I’ve only been on the field for two weeks.”
“What?”
“Please, I have a baby on the way! We just moved into the heights, got a brand new minivan and everything.”
“Son, I don’t think—”
“I volunteered for this gig to make up for that incident! Captain said that all would be forgiven if I show my dedication to the force! Picking this side assignment wasn’t easy on me, you know? I’m terrified of supes!”
“Now, wait just one minute—”
“Please,” he begged, falling on his hands and knees, Garrison’s huge gut casting a shadow over his tearing face. “Just give me another chance! Let me prove to you my worth! I love this country, and super powers or not, I want to show everyone that I could still be a hero!”

Dessi froze. She had no idea what to do or say. I couldn’t help but laugh. This rookie was putting on a show for her, the other officers around them circling the two to see what the commotion was all about. Hoper pulled back his collar, trying not to sweat out the situation. The pressure was eating at Dessi, until she pulled a rabbit out of her hat, and promoted the guy. “Congratulations! You’re being promoted to police detective!”
“What?”
“Heh, y-yes, all is forgiven, Jensen, you silly goose!”
He beamed. “Wait, did Cap set this up? Is he behind all of this?!”
“He sure is! Now, all of you, go back to the station and celebrate! There’s a pizza party with your names on it!”
“Holy shit! I-ugh, I mean, thanks… Thank you so much!” Poor kid was in near tears as he got up and hugged the commissioner. “You won’t regret this decision! I’ll be the best detective this town has even seen! You can count on it!”
“All right son, you’re beginning to smother me. Go on now, all of ya, get!”
“Are you sure?” A lady office said. “Is it a good idea to leave our post?”
“Young lady, follow the chain of command, and I’m commanding all of you to take the rest of the night off! This here is volunteer work, now ain’t it? I’ll stand post. Nothing ever happens around here anyway. Don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”
She grinned. “Thank you, commissioner!”
Damn… Dessi was going to get Garrison fired for sure.
She used the wrong jargon and had Officer Jensen thinking he was fired. All Dessi wanted to do was move him and his colleagues away from the site.
Regardless, she had the place evacuated, at least the upper level. Once the coast was clear, she signaled me to dive inside, through that huge gaping hole that the elemental queen had created with her ice spear a while back. It was the quickest way to the foundation, but what I discovered there wasn’t what I expected…
Something was wrong…
Dessi mentioned about four officers being there. I saw them alright, but they were scattered all over the place… literally. In parts and in pieces. Dead bodies sat limply against the wall, with blood splattered on their uniforms, laying quietly in their own pools of blood. The unfortunate ones looked like they’d exploded, the hallway I was walking through painted with droplets of red like a god damn art gallery.
I didn’t understand it though. If Dessi sensed a struggle, she would have made it known. Could all of this really had happened after we got here?
Nevertheless, the crime scene didn’t stop me. If these officers were murdered, it meant that I had to keep on my toes—I wasn’t alone here, and I needed to keep my guard up.
The closer I went to the source of interest, the warmer it got. I grazed my fingertips along the wall, sensing energy signatures. They were faint, but I picked up at least two bodies a few meters north. I even heard faint whispers, although I couldn’t pick up what they were saying—too bad super hearing wasn’t listed under my SESB.
It would have been nice to hear what they already knew. The idea here was to gather info, right? No getting into confrontations, and that included other supes. Too bad things usually ever go my way, my senses catching someone lingering behind me.
When I turned around, I got a rude welcoming with a metal iron rod, the supe strong enough to have my head pivoting. Even though I felt less than a sting, the blue woman managed to disorient me, and followed with a firm groin kick.
I bucked forward, but stopped her right before she swung that bar into the back of my skull. I snatched the bar, pulled her in with it, and gave her a sharp gut punch, my fist flying through the other side. The sight of a clean kill rattled my breath, and grew my eyes. I wasn’t trying to kill her, but this random boost of strength took no prisoners. I was confused, but mostly, disgusted, to see how my powers so easily killed someone without my permission.
I was usually good at keeping my strength in check. I didn’t know what the fuck just happened. Her friends must have heard the commotion, and two beefy guys came out of the corner, one Cyclops, and one Minotaur.
I hurried up and pulled my fist out of the blond blue girl, who looked like a water type supe. When the burly giant cyclops approached me, I was hesitant to strike, being reduced to a bunch of dodging and weaving. He had me in a corner, and was relentless with his swings, breaking wall after wall to terminate me. I’d had enough and gave him something so he could settle down, a right sweep kick into his side. I clipped him all right… enough for his torso to fly right off of his god damn hips.
“Okay, what the fuck is going on?” I whispered to myself, paranoid. The other one followed me at a distance, the Minotaur supe afraid to get up close. Not like he had to anyway. He stretched his hand forward and snatched his arm, putting enough pressure on it that his claws sliced his own skin. He was using himself as a tether for his moves, because as soon as he did that, I felt tingles down my arm. He slashed down, his wound healing instantaneously. Granted the move was impressive, he was shocked to see it’d don’t nothing but made my arm red.
“What the hell are you?” he growled, disappointed in his efforts to stop me. “You’re no regular supe…” He extracted his claws, ready to do more temporary damage to himself. He started slashing his body up in all different directions, looking to make me bleed. I expect he was the one who was taken cared of these police officers, judging by the conditions they were left in. I could tell he was growing restless, infuriated that he couldn’t even leave a scratch on me.
I was getting a dose of impatience as well, the asshole growling so loudly, exploding with anger. He was shaking the base of the bank, and I had to make a decision quickly. I asked him to disengage and fall back, but of course, the warning fell on deaf ears. I warmed him again, he knew I was dangerous. Regardless, he kept those slashes coming, building up enough heat inside me to trigger something.
I could feel it, and I wanted no part of nuking this place out.
I had a code I followed, even though some of my fellow super heroes didn’t abide by it. Despite that, it was the only thing that differentiated me from people like Draco who mindlessly slaughtered super villains just for the hell of it. Before, I told myself that giving them a chance to surrender was a weakness, stemming from all of that guilt I felt for turning innocent people into weapons. But in actuality, it was part of the business, something even the CEO of TBC told us during our inauguration ceremony.
And if they resisted, you slaughter them.
Remove the threat from the equation before they became a bigger nuisance to society. I ran over and did just that, the last expression on that bullhead screaming at me with fear before I decapitated him with a quick uppercut.
He was the last of them, my heart rate finally settling down. I had a moment to breathe, looking behind me to the mess I’d caused. I still couldn’t understand where all of this extra strength came from, as if I wasn’t strong enough as it is.
I didn’t dwell on it further, making my way to the site, where Draco’s team mate had annihilated the elemental queen a while ago.
From the looks of it, someone had started to excavate already. My guess, those three supes I’d killed. They got pretty far too, where fragments of rubble and thick debris still hovered in the air. My vision was clouded, yet not too disoriented to see something poking out of that heaping pile of rock and stone. It was something round and white, coated with a thin film of dust. The other shell that they dug up wasn’t much, so I got closer to catch the details on it. But that was when I froze, the contact I made with my hand on it opening my mind to something incredibly daunting.
I dismissed it before I could utter the words through my lips, “Dad?”
“Warhead!” someone shouted behind me, and I jumped.
I looked over my shoulder, noticing Commissioner Hoper behind me.
“Dessi?”
“We need to leave, now!” she pleaded, her Wizket flashing violently.
