I followed the girls out of the den, and instead of taking a right down the corridor where they were headed, I went straight. I paid attention to the map in front of me floating over my watch, guiding me to my new home for the next few weeks. Or at least, that’s what I was hoping. It was wishful thinking, but I couldn’t imagine this crisis lasting longer than a month. If The Brother’s Code had institutions established similar to Serva nationwide, I bet they had just as many super heroes to fight for the cause. It was only a matter of time before we found Sigma-RE and shut them down for good.
“All right, I’m making another left here, down ward D,” I whispered to myself, before I heard panting and rushing footsteps closing in on me. A second would be a second too late, realizing a pink-haired girl with ram horns running right at me.
I broke my gait too late and collided with her, barely noticing she was also distracted with the blue screen of directions floating over her watch, too.
To be fair, she was the one who had collided into me, my arms catching her fall while we both dropped on the floor.
She winced, the tip of her nose brushing over mine, and her soft breath basking over my lips. It was a close call, close and personal, a careless tumble falling short from an intimate interaction.
“I’m sorry, I wasn’t paying attention! I—” she stopped short, finally looking down at me as her face went beat red. “L-Liam?” her lilting voice begged, the mystery girl gawking at me like she recognized me from somewhere.
And to be honest, I felt like I recognized her from somewhere, too…
It was almost enchanting, the few seconds of empty silence, the captivating moment of deja-vu. I took in her features, from the short pink hair, to her deep sanguine eyes. She had a round gentle face that made her appear younger, with a petite but curvy body to match. She looked like one of those monster girl variants kin to Aster, without the flirty overtones, or the prison clothes. Her outfit took me away, a vibrant pewter color along with a black cape. She wore an embroidered greyish blue armor-like corset that matched her decorative calf boots and gauntlets, the entire super hero outfit pleasing on the eyes, to say the least.
Especially with her in it.
I was getting familiar vibes from her, and she seemed friendly, with an innocent face that had me gazing at her longer than I should.
I was in no rush to get her off of me, and I even subconsciously brazed my fingertips over her thick thighs. But when she realized she’d been straddling my hips as we stayed there on the floor, the short timid girl instantly flailed her arms up embarrassed. “Ah, how rude of me!” she bellowed, and then scrambled herself up. “I’m so very sorry!”
“Hey, don’t sweat it,” I reassured her, getting up myself. “Are you the fourth?”
“Pardon?”
“My fourth member?”
She answered me with silence, looking at me with her narrow eyes. I felt like she was studying me a bit too hard, until I realized she might have been looking at my stats.
Well, for the hell of it, I should too, shouldn’t I?
I thought the command internally, and her stats came up:

Well, it was safe to say that I was glad she was in fact part of my team!
Those powers and abilities, holy shit, she was OP…
I closed out her stats, confirming her supe name, but not her actual one. She suddenly gawked at me with star struck eyes, the pink-haired girl holding her breath in from awe. “It really is you… I can’t believe it…” she whispered, stroking her finger-tips along my jaw, and down my neck.
Erm, well, I was certainly getting my moments in with her, her soft touches making it hard for me to turn away.
“You look just the same… but bulkier… in all the right places…”
“Huh?”
She jumped. “Oh my gosh, I’m so very sorry! For touching you! I didn’t mean to be weird!”
I gave her a sweet smile. “Something tells me that you recognize me from somewhere.”
“What?” she asked, seemingly worried.
“Um, am I wrong? I don’t know, maybe a coffee shop or something? The park? Because, I feel like I’d seen you around.”
“I, ugh… truly doubt it,” she said shyly, clearing her throat before she extended her hand to me. “My name is Dessi. You can call me Oracle too, if you like.”
I chuckled, taking her offer. “Oracle seems too business formal. I’d rather call you Dessi. Name’s Liam Ch—”
“Chago, yes, I know.” She grinned. “It’s a pleasure meeting you, Liam. I am sorry for missing our brunch.”
“Well, maybe you can make it up to me by walking me to our ward,” I suggested.
“I’d love to, Liam,” she sang, her face lighting up with my invitation.
Our walk was quiet for the most part, but I swear, it wasn’t intentional. I was preoccupied with trying to remember where I’d seen her before. Her soft breathy voice… it was all too familiar. And that face, not to mention her impressionable bright pink hair. I couldn’t stop telling myself I wasn’t seeing things, or mistaking her for someone else, while it also felt like my mind was stopping me from remembering where we may have met.
On her part, she seemed fidgety. Almost as if she was trying to figure out how to break the ice with me. It was cute, watching her pretend she wasn’t staring, those occasional turns of her curious eyes my way as we navigated through the halls not going unnoticed. I had to admit, my chest had flustered up a bit back there when she stumbled into me, the reaction of being with her feeling right at home.
Okay, so that confirmed it, right? I knew her from somewhere for sure…
“Here we are, ward K,” she said, my gait stopping right in front of a tall brown door with her.
“So, this is where we’ll be living from now on, huh?”
“Yes… together,” she said with a smile as she looked up to me. “Would you like to do the honors?”

I froze. “Eh, I don’t have the key code.”
“It’s under your living quarters tab in your Wizket,” she said, tapping commands on my watch, and showing me what she was referring to. “See? 07994.”
“Ah, smart and cute,” I complimented, her instant reaction too adorable. I didn’t think I’d ever get tired of watching her cheeks flush, that gaping look on her face telling me she hadn’t expected such a comment coming from her head captain.
To be honest, I needed to be careful with her, feeling that I was getting a bit too comfortable with Dessi already.
No close relationships; that had always been my motto, and I couldn’t break it now, not even in a team filled with three attractive girls…
I walked in, and she followed me, the swinging door giving way to a clean contemporary and open floor plan.
It was tasteful, its monotone and clean colors inviting us in. There was a lot of natural sunlight coming in from the wide windows, and with the scenery from outside already blooming in boundless green, I could see myself feeling right at home, drinking my morning coffee out on the balcony.
“I like it,” she said modestly, making me turn my head back to her.
“Yeah, me too. I mean, I’m from the city, but this is a nice change of pace.”
“Do you have family from where you are from, Liam?” Dessi asked me, gradually taking her spot at my left side.
“Um, somewhat,” I said, skeptical about letting her know the details of my life, for the same reasons I hadn’t told Aster or Rynn.
“Any children of your own?”
“Heh, well, that was a very straightforward question,” I teased. “When you asked me about family, I thought you implied my parents, or any siblings.”
“Eh, y-yes, I meant those too, of course!” she stumbled nervously. “From your response, I take it that means you don’t have someone special back home?”
“How old are you, Dessi?” I asked her, curving the topic while casually stuffing my hands in my pockets.
“Me? I’m nineteen.”
Nineteen, five-two, I shouldn’t have been this tempted…
From a follow up question like that, she may have thought I was interested in her. It was something I did subconsciously, but didn’t regret it, getting lost in her innocent eyes.
“Nineteen, were you in college?”
“N-no, actually. I was homeschooled and then I… decided to start working to support myself.”
“What did you do?”
“I was a teacher’s aide before this. Working at a kindergarten class. It was the only place where I felt I belonged, surrounded by beautiful children.”
“Sounds like you’re looking to have some of your own one day, huh?”
She nodded with a smile. “Yes, I’d like to. With someone special…”
Erm, I may have been reading too much into it, but I couldn’t deny the look on her face right now. Had I been made a candidate without even knowing it?
Well, Dessi sure didn’t bother hiding her enthusiasm when she gazed promisingly at me, feeling my face starting to heat up. I scratched the back of my head, turning away while changing the topic. “H-hey, how about we take a quick look around before heading to
the—” I stopped short, a looming feeling grounding me. I looked over my shoulder, a faint audible echo sending my senses through the roof. “Did you hear that?”
“Hear what?” Dessi said, confused.
“It’s coming from down the hallway…” I moved out of our ward, Dessi locking the door behind us. She followed me further down, where nothing but the off white walls looked back at us dauntingly. Something was here… I felt this pull in the air; could it be another supe?
“Liam,” Dessi whispered, but I was too focused on this unnatural force luring me down these halls. Until my team mate rushed in and tackled me, sending the both of us on the ground.
An explosion behind us carved a nice huge hole in the wall, letting the sunlight shine right through. Dessi just saved me, but from what? I still couldn’t see anything past the floating debris in the air, not until I noticed this faint fizzing translucent movement cutting the space between us.
“Let’s move,” I begged Dessi, helping her up so the both of us could find some cover.
It seemed that Dessi had an idea of when the explosions would happen before they did. Although, her timing was on the tighter end. We were cutting it close every time as we dodged explosions while this mysterious supe hunted us down. I was getting tired of this cat and mouse play, and figured even though I was weakened by that kato-evo3 injection, I still had some fight in me.
So I squared up to fight, tucking Dessi behind me.
“Liam, wait!”
“Whoever this supe is, he’s just intimidating us.” Well, I misspoke—it was a female behind this attack, and she finally decided to show herself.
Outside of her cloaking ability, she looked like a zombie with long fragile black hair and pale thin skin, so thin that I could see her blue veins. Her eyes were sunken, and her face hallow, the simple white gown she had on telling me she came straight from the medical ward.
Did she wake up too early and figure everyone here a threat? Because we had no beef with her, and I couldn’t understand why she was attacking us.
“All right, time to put you out,” I grunted under my breath, standing to fight. She continued doing what she did best, blowing things up. I might have underestimated how much the injection weakened me, because when she curled her fingers to trigger her powers, my crossed arms over my face took a mean hit.
“Liam!” Dessi cried. I looked down and noticed the damages, my invulnerability reduced severely. I could almost see my bone through all of that torn muscle, but strength wise, I was still able to move.
So I dashed in at her, making her miss her trajectory when I ducked and tackled her arm. Instead of shooting forward toward Dessi, she shot at an upward angle. I took the debris head on, the ceiling crashing on us. I blocked her with my back hunched upward, protecting her from a critical hit, while in the same time, I had my arm around her neck, knocking her unconscious.
“Liam!” Dessi begged, raking through the rubble to get to me.
“I’m fine,” I reassured her. Her eyes grew when she noticed I’d taken her out, and her breath rattled when she noticed how badly I was hurt.
I laid the mystery girl with the crazy explosive powers along the wall before Dessi pulled me aside and assessed my wounds. “Don’t worry, I can heal you. Just stay still. It may tickle a little.”
Heal? I had almost forgotten her skillset, Dessi laying her hands directly on my bloody gash. It did tickle, and it glowed a vibrant yellowish light, particles like floating glitter suspended over my arms. I held my breath, amazed by her power, my muscles and skin webbing back together incredibly quick.
And soon, I was as good as new, as if nothing had ever happened…
“Well shit,” I said with a grin, “Color me impressed.”
She took a sigh of relief, then looked up to me with a huge smile. “Liam, that was reckless!”
“Heh, I know. But I didn’t want you getting hurt.”
“Thank you for protecting me.”
“I should be thanking you for—”
“Stand down!” I heard a call stretching out from the end of the hall, about six men in white hazmat suits with gas cans catching our attention. Then they looked down at the girl, their offensive approach going down a few notches. “You two took her out?”
“We did,” I said, scrunching my brows at them. “She should have had sharper surveillance. There’s no telling how many of us she could have killed, or killed already...”
“Let us worry about that,” the one in the foreground said in a condescending tone. “The two of you clear the area. I believe you have a meeting to go to.”
