The brief was quick. Only problem was that Roe City was an hour away from us. We wouldn’t make it, especially seeing how only Dessi and I had the ability to fly. Unless we used Symphony, the only supe who could transport us in the speed of light—supposedly. I wasn’t a believer, not until we showed up in the front lawn and she showed us her magic.

The porcelain looking girl with the white hooded robe and the sand for hair instructed us on how to position ourselves. We waited along the inlays of a ring of sand and essentially stepped inside a wormhole, with vivid psychedelic colors I only had a fraction of a second to enjoy. She didn’t waste her time, teleporting us with one mission on our minds; contain the threat, minimize casualties, and help relocate the people.

We ripped through time and space in a blink of an eye, the effects bothering us none. Symphony had encased us in a transparent protective shell that kept our limbs and organs intact. And a good thing too, because we were needed in the heart of my old city in Watch Square.

Back to the place where it all began…

One moment we were at Serva’s campus, and then the next, two blocks away from Watch Square Unity Bank. I had my team close behind me while I assessed the situation; the bank in partial flames on the left and cop cruisers on the right. Military hadn’t shown up yet from what I could tell. Between the two, I surveyed the losses, but at this distance, I couldn’t see much.

There was no specific plan, not until we knew what we were up against.

“Come on, we need to get closer. We stick as a team until we understand their super powers. I don’t want to risk splitting up too soon,” I said, and then I turned over to Dessi who looked distressed.

She had two fingers along her temple, her eyes locked forward. “Oracle, what’s wrong?”

“I’m not… sure.” She winced. “There is something of value to these criminals in the bank.”

“Yeah, a butt load of money,” Rynn said sarcastically.

“No, it’s something else. Something well hidden. I can’t make out exactly what it is. Or where it is. I only know that it is in there, and this team is determined to retrieve it.”

“Well, there’s only one way to find out what they came here for. Let’s go.”

When we got close, the amount of smoke was tenfold. It was blinding, a bit excessive for what we were dealing with. And then the reason came zipping over our heads, my immediate reaction to track it down sending me sky-bound. It crashed right into the apartment building across the street, a super villain with the ability to produce smoke.

It was escaping every pore of his body, the tall lanky kid with a black mohawk grunting in pain.

“Easiest way of crushing a bug if you ask me,” someone emerging from inside the smoke across from me said, his voice familiar. “You call the ultimate exterminator. Fire kills everything.”

“Great,” I groaned under my breath, noticing the dragon bastard appearing from the thick debris, wearing that renowned shit eating grin.

It seemed like the Delta Region had assigned us as backup, something Pamela surprisingly omitted in the brief. That would have been great news, to know I had to work with Draco in taking these guys out. I could already tell the prick was going to get in the way, his methodology sure to clash with mine.

He cracked his knuckles and approached the smoke kid, then stood a distance in front of him. “That’ll teach you to know your fucking place,” he grunted bitterly. Then just as the kid started to solidify, Draco torched him.

All it took was one glare and a half second. I couldn’t react in time, the piercing scream of the super villain making me numb inside. I stood there frozen, my mouth left ajar as I watched Draco roast a child.

He was no older than thirteen, just a kid who had lost his way in this fucked up world we all lived in.

I stepped in between them and gave Draco a shove against his arm. “What the fuck do you think you are doing?!”

“What does it look like, boy wonder? If we don’t kill them now, they will pop up and spread later. It’s what pests do.”

“We have orders to contain the threat, not mindlessly exterminate them!”

“Ugh, are you serious?” he sighed, slumping his shoulders over as he belittled me with his glare. “TBC left that under our discretion. So you can go about doing it your way, and my team will go about doing it my way. And my way makes perfect fucking sense. If we let them live now, they will continue to be a problem later. There’s no converting these supe freaks into heroes, so why bother dealing with all of that, right? It’s fucking common sense.”

“And who the hell do you think you are to decide? Passing judgment like that? Using your powers as a ticket to slaughtering people? Because at the end of the day, that’s what they are, regardless of what they’ve become.”

“Heh, holy shit… you really are stupid, aren’t you?” His eyes grew. “Maybe even downright mad!” He flashed me his fangs with a toothy grin, the delirious look on his face making my fists tighten. “Mind yours. You can simp over these worthless scums on your own time! Don’t do it on mine and get in my way!” Draco flew off with the power of his flames under his feet, my head then turning to the smoke kid still ablaze.

The flames reflected in my glassy eyes, like a foreshadowing of more to come from the Beta A team. Charlie had warned me about him, but I had a feeling that I already knew what he was about. No sympathy, all destruction—as fire was known to do. Burning everything in its path.

What in the hell convinced The Brother’s Code that Draco was the right candidate for a super hero project?

These people, they were all victims of my DNA. I had to live with that, and wanted to reconcile every way I could. Helping them find their way to freedom was how I planned to do that, but what Draco did reminded me of all of the obstacles I had to overcome, and that the path to freedom wasn’t going to be easy.

“Warhead!” Dessi cried, rushing her way to me. “Is everything all right?” she panted.

“Yeah…” I said softly, stepping in front of her to block her from seeing what Draco had done. “Come on, let’s plan.” Aster and Rynn came shortly after, the three girls ready to receive my instructions. “We need to cover all angles, split between the four of us. Draco’s team is already on site, but regardless, I want access inside the building. There’s a row of cruisers in the front, but they are starting to pull away. Makes me believe that the military isn’t going to provide back up since we arrived. I don’t want to do this to you Forger, but I feel like you’re the best to cover three angles: east, west, and north. Oracle will cover the top, taking to the skies, and Sorceress, you’re going to survey the back of the building. Think you can handle it?”

Aster smiled confidently. “Of course.”

“Forger?”

“Do you really have to ask?” Rynn said, then went off to her post.

“Good. Let’s move out. Remember, contain the threat before resorting to—”

“Killing them?” Aster finished, pointing her head toward the smoke kid who had finally stopped burning. “Did you do that, Warhead?”

“Of course not!” Dessi cried. “Why would you assume that Warhead could do such a thing?”

“It was Draco,” I corrected. “And that’s the kind of shit I don’t want us doing, unless we absolutely have to! Come on.”

We all split up, rushing to our posts. I had given them their orders, and I knew that my team could carry out the mission successfully. I flew inside, the large double doors to the bank already broken into. Glass was shattered, walls were torn down, even the cement stairs caved in, making it impossible for civilians to escape this death trap.

It was scorching hot inside; no doubt Draco was to blame. I heard a few civilians in a room blocked off by flames, and they were crying out for help. I walked through the screen of smoke and fire, noticing five women and two guys who worked in the bank.

“Please, help us!” the blond woman begged me, her gentle face reminding me of my Rachel. They were all behind a large executive desk made of marble, but the heat and the lack of oxygen was running out their time, and I had to act fast.

I picked the desk back on its legs, standing it up.

“Can you all move?” I asked them, and they nodded. “Go underneath the desk, as far in as you can. I am going to bash the window out.”

“Okay, we trust you,” she said, helping the rest of them right along. I then walked up to the tall two story arched window, already realizing how thick it was. But it was just wide enough to help all of them escape. So I gave it a sharp kick, and I might have even went a little overboard. It felt like paper, the ease of breaking through the glass leaving my audience marveled.

I shook off the shower of glass, and started scooping them up by two. This room was on the right side, but I didn’t see Rynn covering it. Although, there was a turret not too far from us, so it looked like Rynn had already set up shop.

“Ahh, gun!” the man cried out, hiding behind me. I watched the turret closely, and it didn’t determine us as a threat. “Don’t worry, one of my teammates set this up. It has a camera on it, and I’m sure she is monitoring it. We aren’t a threat, so you’re safe.”

I led them to a safe point outside, as far away from the bank as possible. Once I took my last survivor, she gave me a kiss on the cheek and hugged me tightly. “Bless your heart, young man.”

Her kind words brought a smile on my face, the elder woman in tears. The fire department pulled up by us to help, and I went back inside the whirling inferno.

Once inside, I immediately looked for more survivors but came back empty handed. I wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing, seeing as when I flew up to the second floor, I saw the shape it was in. A part of the roof had caved in, but that didn’t stop these two super humans from duking it out.

A girl with electricity powers was fighting one of our own. I only recognized the busty and brawny TBC hero because I had seen her in Take Down practice. She was huge, as in muscular, with red skin and yellow piercing eyes. She had two short black horns above her forehead, pointed ears, and a side of her head shaved. To be fair, she looked like one of those super villains with that hellish appeal, but this ogre looking fem was here to save the bank, swinging her arms at the electricity pouring from her opponent’s fists.

She was immune to it, her tough skin taking on high voltage power shots. I stepped in and helped her, rushing right in between the two, and absorbed her energy with my hand out. She looked down to her hands stunned, then gave me another boost. I guess the first time wasn’t enough to convince her that she was fucked. And once she stopped feeding me, I ricocheted the current right back to her.

Her body writhed and convulsed, before dropping down for the count. I didn’t fry her completely, just enough to keep her in time out for a bit while I continued to assess the situation.

“Thank you, Warhead,” her surprisingly sweet voice came from behind me.

I pivoted, giving her a sure nod. “You’re welcome, um—”

“Tabatha, AKA Mini,” she said, giving me a handshake.

Another ironic hero name. “I guess you read my stats?”

“And you didn’t read mine?”

She was taller than me by maybe a foot, but I wasn’t intimidated, especially with the way she was gawking at me. “No, can’t say I did.”

“You should make a habit of doing so, to distinguish friend from foe in the battlefield.”

“I appreciate the tip. I will consider it next time.”

“Hmm, class A,” she said, stroking her chin. “I wonder why TBC hadn’t called you to the scene first.”

“Well seeing how badly Draco screwed up, I wonder the same.”

“Draco?”

“Yeah, this place has been burning up ever since I got here.”

“No, that wasn’t from Draco. There is an elemental super villain in the bank, most likely in the sub floors. We have been trying to reach her. I overheard her team saying that they needed to drill further in.”

“Drill? As in beyond the foundation of the building?”

“Yes.”

“So, they really aren’t looking for money. Do you have any idea what they are after?”

“No clue. Their team has more players than we do. We are slowly taking them out. They came in strategically, but once we arrived at the scene, they scattered, as intended. And Draco is outside taking care of Smoke.”

“I’d say he handled him already…”

“If he’s not up here, then that means he is pursuing the elemental queen in the sub floors with Porco and Siren.”

“The rest of your team I presume? Then we are headed there too. I have my team covering outside. I’m not sure how much of a—” I flinched, the ground suddenly  tremoring below us. The entire bank felt that shock, sourced from below, in the sub floors. And then out of nowhere, an iceberg sliced between us, Tabatha nearly getting clipped by the sharp pointed tip.

“Are you all right?” I asked her, making my way around the huge pillar of ice.

“I am fine,” she said as I helped her off her ass.

“I am not the type to boss other teams around, but, if you’ve cleared this top floor, can you help my friend Oracle outside in front of the bank?”

She gave me a sweet smile. “We share the same title, Warhead. I’ll always be glad to do what I can to help.”

“Thanks! I’ll head down to the subfloors.”

“Do you know how to get there?”

“Well, this huge iceberg should get me there fast and easy.” She stood there and watched to see what I was talking about, my hand taking to the ice spear. In no time, it started to melt, but I wasn’t thawing it with my heat. I was actually taking its energy, which was the faster route.

“Wow, color me impressed!”

“See you on the other side, Mini.”

I descended, and reached the sub floors in less than two seconds. I had no idea what was in store for me, but by the looks of it, Draco had already sent the queen packing with the help of his team. Porco stood there re-assimilating her human skin from the blue slime pool a few meters away from my feet. Siren was right next to Draco, putting her hand over his arms that were encased in ice blocks. I felt a vibration and she broke him free, the red head then turning over to me confused. As for the queen, well, she had been taken care of all right, minced into a huge pile of blood and guts on the ground…
