As he started to run, the lead guard lunged with his sword. Grayson flinched away, instinctively raising his arm to block the strike. As the sword neared, he saw water flow out of his skin and create a barrier in front of him. Looking on wide-eyed, Grayson saw as the sword hit the water shield, then skidded off, as if meeting steel.

Grayson’s grin returned as he continued to run. Several more guards swung weapons at him, and wherever they were about to strike, water would appear to deflect the blows, following Grayson’s command to protect him perfectly.

After that, Grayson was off like a shot. He felt strength coursing through his body like never before. He had struggled to run away from malnourished prisoners, but now the guards were left behind, quickly outmatched by his speed.

Grayson reveled in the feeling of strength and power, but was distracted when he heard something skitter against his water shield from behind. One of the archers on the wall had taken a shot, trying to hit him while his back was turned, but his water shield had blocked the arrow without him even knowing the attack was coming. Grayson raised his eyebrows in appreciation, continuing to run away from the guards. After he had put some distance between himself and the aquadome, Grayson paused a moment to decide what to do next. Shockingly, he was barely winded after sprinting all out for several minutes.

His goal was to get back to the mainland and find General Trest's wife. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to use these new powers of his to get there. He was fairly sure he could, from what he had picked up from Trest, the man had implied it was possible, but it might take some practice.

At the very least, he was more confident in that plan than trying to sneak onto a ship, especially when they already knew he was on the loose. The entire population of the island would certainly be looking out for him. Hijacking a ship was an even more dubious option.

Deciding on a new direction to travel, Grayson moved toward the island’s beach, on the same coast as the fort, but on the opposite side of the island, with the hope that the extra distance would save him some time before the guards came searching for him.

He took off running, reveling in the feeling of the air rushing through his hair. He dodged in between trees and jumped over underbrush until he arrived near the beach, but decided not to enter the open before he had figured out how he was going to cross over the water.

Looking up at the ring above his head, Grayson tried to dismiss his command mentally, and he was pleased when the ring returned to the shape of a disk. It seemed like he could give his power commands, and it would follow those commands until they were canceled. At least, that was his best guess based on what he had done so far.

Trying not to get too excited, Grayson commanded his power to let him fly, and the disk remained whole.

Damn, he thought, I was really hoping that would work. I guess if I can’t fly, I’ll try walking.

He mentally commanded his power to support his feet at this altitude. He had no idea if the magic would know what altitude was, but he thought he would give it a try. It had already done the impossible several times over, so it wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibility.

He took a few steps toward the beach, and was overjoyed, when the land started sloping downward, his feet stayed at the same level, allowing him to essentially walk in the air.

Grayson felt giddy as he started running out toward the ocean. He didn’t know if this was the best way to cross, but he didn’t want to stay on the island too long. His power only seemed to be able to do one thing at a time, and he couldn’t protect himself from guards and flee the island at the same time. The best thing to do was make his escape now, and learn more about his powers later.

He was halfway through crossing the beach, when he felt something inside of him, almost like when he had first come across the pearl of ascension in the Proving Grounds. It was a pulsing, and it was getting stronger rapidly. Grayson looked around, not noticing anything for a moment, and all the while the feeling grew stronger. Finally, he looked above him, and his eyes grew wide before he threw himself to the side.

A glowing blue sword cleaved into the ground just under where he had been standing. On one knee, holding the sword in both hands, was Lord Thran, clad in his uniform of maroon and silver. Grayson groaned when he saw the man had two rings and a disk floating in the air above his head. It appeared the man was a wavelord as well. In hindsight, it was fairly obvious that the league would station a wavelord here to protect their source of pearls of ascension, but it hadn’t occurred to Grayson before now.

Lord Thran Quickly recovered from his missed strike, standing from his kneeling position. But he didn’t make any aggressive moves now that his sneak attack had failed, instead choosing to examine Grayson with hard eyes.

“How is it that a Valintian can bond with a pearl of ascension?” He asked, “I have never heard of anyone but full-blooded nobles of the great cities being able to harness their power.”

Grayson didn’t answer, instead he was panicking, trying to think of any way he could escape this situation. It seemed helpless. The man had three of the halos, meaning he could do three things with his powers at the same time, compared to Grayson’s one. That was the least of his problems. This man likely had years of practice being a wavelord, and Grayson had less than half an hour. Whether he decided to fight or flee, it seemed like there was no way he could possibly win.

Lord Thran just snorted when Grayson didn’t respond, and charged toward him, the pulses of power growing as he got closer. It seemed that wavelords were able to sense each other’s powers while in use. That was likely how the man had tracked him down so quickly. Grayson backpedaled in the air, trying to gain a little space. He was surprised when Lord Thran jumped toward him, and the final disk over his head became a ring for just a moment, and the man was able to jump off water that appeared in the air under his feet, speeding at Grayson faster than he had expected, swinging his sword in a vicious diagonal slash

Thinking quickly, Grayson canceled his command for his power to keep him at the same altitude, and the water supporting him from below disappeared. He tumbled to the ground, but managed to dodge the sword ripping through the air over his head.

The third disk above Lord Thran became a ring again, and Lord Thran planted his feet in the air, before looking down on Grayson, a look of consternation on his face as he spoke once again. “You have become accustomed to your powers far too quickly. What have you done, Valintian?”

Grayson simply stood up and turned to run, but he looked back quickly to see what Lord Thran’s reaction would be.

Grayson grew concerned when the man raised a hand, and pointed his index finger at Grayson’s back. Getting a bad feeling, Grayson ordered his power to protect him, and not a moment too soon. The first ring above the man’s head flickered for a moment before an incredibly strong jet of water shot out of the man’s finger, and impacted the shield hard enough to push Grayson stumbling forward. He would have certainly face planted if not for General Trest’s training.

Lord Thran furrowed his brow, looking perplexed, before he harrumphed and charged toward Grayson, brandishing his sword before jumping. The third ring above his head once again became a disk, and the man used gravity to fall straight toward Grayson.

For his part, Grayson ran as quickly as he could with is protection still up, but it was becoming increasingly clear he needed to defeat this man if he wanted to escape. If he tried to use his power to cross the ocean, Lord Thran would cut him to pieces with the pressurized water. Grayson guessed that because the man had abandoned his water beam in favor of the sword, it would be more effective cutting through his defense.

He was proven correct when he tried to dodge a swipe of the sword from the man swooping in from behind, but wasn’t quick enough. The sword connected with his shield, and even though it was slowed, it still pushed its way through, leaving a shallow cut on Grayson’s bicep.

Grayson’s eyes widened at that. If his shield hadn’t slowed the strike, he would have lost his arm. Lord Thran had flown past Grayson, but he had landed on his feet, and quickly rounded on where Grayson had fallen.

In desperation, Grayson tried something he wasn’t sure would work at all. He dismissed his shield, and ordered his power to create a large copy of his hand that would mimic his actions.

He was pleased when water flowed out of him into the air in front of him, forming the shape of a blue hand, about the size of his torso. Once that was done, Grayson swung is arm out in an open palmed slap. The copy of a hand swept out in front of him, swinging right towards Lord Thran.

The man snorted, swinging his sword, looking unconcerned. The sword cut deeply into the hand, but Grayson saw Lord Thran’s eyes go wide in surprise when it still crashed into him with jarring speed.

A shield appeared around Lord Thran, blunting the blow, but it could only do so much. The force from the blow sent the man flying like a rag doll, speeding through the air before taking a few bounces on the sand of the beach before eventually skidding to a halt.

Grayson looked down at his hand in wonder before looking up at an unmoving Lord Thran. The blow seemed to have taken the man out of commission, and Grayson wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. He commanded his powers to let him walk at the same altitude once again, before he started running. The water from the giant floating hand flowed back toward him, and soon he was once again running through the air.

Every once in a while, he would look back to see if the figure of Lord Thran would get up, but he simply laid where he had fallen until Grayson couldn’t see the man anymore in the distance. As he continued to run, Grayson started to feel tired, both physically, and in a way he had never felt before. It was a soul deep feeling. Grayson assumed it was from using his powers nonstop since he started sprinting away from the island.

Despite it all, he still let out a whoop of joy when he saw the mainland appear before him. He had made it back surprisingly quickly, far faster than it had taken to sail the distance by ship.

Seeing the same port city where he had boarded the ship that brought him to Endeavor Island, Grayson decided to set down outside the port before heading inside the city. Chuckling to himself, Grayson imagined what the reaction of the people working the docks would be if they were to see him casually stroll into the city while walking in the air.

His chuckle quickly turned into a grimace when he realized he didn’t have any money, connections, or knowledge, but with an inward shrug, Grayson decided he would just have to wing it. He would try to make some quick cash however he could, but if he really had to, he could steal what he needed. It wasn’t the right thing to do, but he figured this world owed him at this point.

Directing himself toward the coast, Grayson was pleased when he was able to simply walk until the land was just underneath him. He canceled his power, and the ring became a disk above his head. Frowning at that, Grayson stopped pulling on the bond, and the disk faded from existence.

He felt immediate relief from the soul weariness he had been feeling. Grayson still felt tired, but now that he wasn’t actively using the bond, it wasn’t wearing on him nearly so much.

Letting out a deep breath, Grayson turned toward the port city and started walking.
