Chapter 37: Chapter 37 Back Home Again

A couple of minutes later as we were traveling along the asphalt road east the road split into a Y shape so we continued following the way I initially came from when I set off on my journey from vault 101 which was the road that heads in the northeast direction.

 

My group and I then got on the road heading northeast and continued following it for the next couple of minutes till the road bent and continued east. Another couple of minutes later the road split into a Y shape again so we continued retracing the route I initially traveled heading north for the next several minutes and arriving in the vicinity of Big Town.

 

Once we were in the general vicinity of Big Town we continued traveling west so we can get on the side road that heads to the southwest. After a minute had passed my group and I were now heading southwest and when another minute had quickly passed us by we came to the main road again where I checked the area for any dangers for a few moments.

 

When I was done checking the area out I discovered a group of 30 giant worker ants heading in the south direction along the main road which directly passes by Vault 101 so I redirected my group to start traveling in the direction instead of passing through the main road to continue heading southeast in the direction of the Springvale School.

 

As we were gaining on the giant ant workers I gripped my AER 29 LMG and aimed it at the group and held down the trigger for 10 seconds while sweeping the weapon left to right. When those 10 seconds were up the entire group of 30 giant worker ants was dispatched so we continued south following the main road since there's a road that splits off from the main one that leads directly to Vault 101.

 

Several minutes later after we passed the numerous fresh giant ant corpses I just made my group and I came upon the road that we needed to take to reach Vault 101 but as we were going to head north to follow it to our destination I spotted a group of 3 giant radscorpions.

 

When I spotted them I told my group of robots that they could deal with them so robots unleashed a laser light show at them and after a few seconds, they stopped firing. What appeared in my vision was just a scorch mark on the earth not one piece of the giant rad scorpions remained.

 

Thankfully I didn’t plan on looting them otherwise I would’ve been quite peeved. I thought to myself before I headed north with my small army of robots and 3 ghoul brothers in tow.

 

We then arrived at the large cave opening to Vault 101 so I slung my AER 29 LMG on my shoulder and pulled my communication device out and gave it a ring. A moment later Amata’s father the overseer answered the call.

 

“Hey, father-in-law I’m at the cave entrance of the vault.” I told him.

 

“Alright hold up for a minute son while I get them to open the vault door for you also just a heads up Amata is very antsy so be prepared to catch an Amata-shaped projectile.”

 

“Okay, thanks for the heads up I’ll see you guys in a second.”

 

“See you then.”

 

Once I finished the call and hung up I put the communication device back away in my inventory as well as my AER 29 LMG and took Amata’s power armor out of anyone's view and placed it into the back of Hauler. When that was done I directed my group to enter the cave and when they were all inside I had the Hill brothers hop out of Hauler.

 

While we were waiting for the vault door to start opening I exited out of my power armor so Amata wouldn’t injure herself when she inevitably leaps at me and once I was out of the suit the Hill brothers and I start chatting about how life was back before nuclear annihilation. After a couple of minutes had passed we heard the vault door start to open so we stopped conversing and directed our attention to the vault door.

 

*Grrrrnnddd*

 

Several seconds went by before the massive door ground to a halt and when it did finally the massive metal door rolled off to the left side a moment later revealing the vault entrance. As soon as the door stopped rolling and came to a complete stop Amata came charging out towards me and leaped towards me where I caught her and spun her around to slow her down so she wouldn’t crash into me.

 

As she slowed down she latched onto me so I asked her. “So you must’ve missed me a bunch if the very first thing you do is run out of the vault and latch onto me?”

All I got in response to my question from Amata was a bright red face, a head nod against my chest, and an mm sound. I then hugged Amata for a short while and let her stay latched on to me while I headed inside the vault to greet everyone and see how they’d been doing since I’d been gone.

 

As I was approaching the vault entrance Amata hopped down on her own but a split second later latched onto my left arm walking alongside me. I guess staying latched onto me like that was a bit too much for her.

 

Moments later Amata, the 3 ghoul brothers, and I entered the vault and when we did we were greeted by my father, Amata’s father, officer Gomez along with the vault security uncles, old man Pete, butch, and the gang. I then spent the next 10 minutes talking to everyone there and introducing the 3 Hill brothers to everyone there.

 

After talking to everyone for a while I sent a signal to my robots with mechu-deru to start moving the stuff I had stockpiled in my research/workshop and once I was done assigning them their new job we all collectively headed to the usual dining area and had a bit of a welcome back party for me though I thought it was a bit much to have one for me when I was only gone for a relatively short period of time. But I’m not complaining since I got to eat a ton of delicious food that I didn’t have to make myself.

 

Two hours later Amata and I headed out to go spend some time together like I had promised a while ago when I was out in the wasteland. When the two of us exited the dining area where the welcome back event was held Amata immediately attached herself to my right arm before we walked over to one of the many communal entertainment areas in the vault passing by the numerous vault residents going about their daily lives.

 

A short couple of minutes passed before we arrived at our intended destination which was a very large room filled to the brim with well over a hundred different games to choose from.

 

“So Amata what do you want to start off with first?” I asked her.

 

“Hmm, how about we go play some air hockey first?” She asked.

 

“Sure sounds good to me.” I replied before we both headed over to one of the 4 air hockey tables in the entertainment area.

 

Amata and I then spent the next half an hour playing air hockey where she got really into it since I was keeping the game at a draw for a good portion of the game but at that half-an-hour mark I thought it was about time we go do something else for a bit otherwise we’ll be here all day so I waited till she hit the puck and when it was nearing my striker I let it pass by a small margin letting it enter my goal half a second later.

 

*Clink*

 

“Yea I won!.” Amata yelled excitedly as the puck entered my goal breaking our tie.

 

I waited a few seconds while Amata calmed down a bit before complimenting her on her performance-winning shot. “You did great Amata and that last shot was something else.”

 

“Ohh it wasn’t that great you just let me win.” She said a bit shyly with faintly flushed cheeks to which I replied with.

 

“Nonsense you did phenomenally well but moving on from that since you won what do you want to go do now?”

 

“Let's go play a few of the other games here then we’ll go for a swim at the pool since I haven’t done that with you in a while and I don’t think there will be very many if any opportunities at all to go swimming together out in the wasteland.”

 

“Yeah let's do that and you’re very right about there being no opportunities to go swimming in the wasteland since most water is contaminated by different levels of radiation.” I said before continuing.

 

“Ohh and when we’re done swimming I’ll cook us a nice dinner for just the two of us.” I said lastly which put a bright smile on Amata’s face.
