Zecca, AKA Himegami Zetsuka, is a sophomore in high school. After returning home from her cram school’s assessment test, she opened her smartphone, confirmed her test result, and said to herself, “Hey, there was a ranking event today, wasn’t there?”

It had become an ingrained habit from being a former member of a top guild.

“The overall ranking is~huh. The first place is Roland-san. They’re never going knock him off, are they?”

2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place, 5th place, and so on.

10 months have passed since the release of Genesis Omega Online. Since the Strength and Agility-specific builds that became meta about half a year ago got popular, the top players have been biased toward similar character builds, mostly Sabers. The buffed-up Summoners were their rival, but they were nerfed drastically and collapsed halfway through the game’s life. It has resulted in a large number of former Summoners quitting outright.

Sabers have an overwhelming advantage in the ranking events held as one-on-one battles, and currently, half of the player base are Sabers.

There are many players who are cheap knock-offs of Roland, who sits in the top spot without Unique Equipment. Zetsuka, who doesn’t like such a static state of affairs, closes the overall rankings with a sigh.

“Now then, let’s take a look at the fastest risers. Are there any influential newcomers who can break through this stagnation?”

The Rapid Rise Ranking is a leaderboard over who rises the most ranks. For example, if a player rises from 3rd place to 2nd place and a player rises from 1000th place to 990th place, the latter can go higher in that competition.

“Umm, seems like someone jumped from the 100,000’s to 107th. The player’s name is Johann. I wonder what they did to get to 107th… wait? Johann… Johann… Johann-san?!”

Zetsuka unintentionally screams and gets scolded by her mother in the next room. But that didn’t matter.

“Uhh, Johann, it’s only been two weeks since you started, right? When I met you last week, you were still level 1. You said that you can’t log in much because you’re a working adult…”

Zetsuka is puzzled by the mystery. When she glanced at the clock, it was just after midnight. When Zetsuka went to a video-sharing site, she opened the Official Genesis Omega Online channel. Then, she clicked on a highlight reel uploaded just 10 minutes ago.

“If someone’s shooting up to #1, they have to be here somewhere.”

Zetsuka stares at the screen like she was about to devour the video. And then she found what she was looking for immediately.

Dressed in jet-black armor, Johann flips her red cloak, summons the layer boss Kuwa Geiger, and tramples players with lightning attacks that players themselves cannot use.

And she’s of such mysterious endurance that Roland, the strongest player, can’t cut her down from 1HP no matter how many times he slashes at Johann.

In the end, they split up amicably, and Zetsuka can no longer imagine how she will ever be able to win against this player.

“What is this monster…?” she muttered.

Was that really Johann? Zetsuka wondered if that was her Johann-san, who honestly seemed to care for nothing other than Virtumon.

“This is probably because she got some kind of unique equipment…” Zetsuka muttered as she continued watching the video.

Even if she were there, would she be able to beat Johann? Zetsuka wondered if she can win against Johann even though Johann makes the strongest player, Johann, struggle so much. However, she couldn’t help smiling as she thought it all over.

“…I mean, if the timer hadn’t run out, would you have won?”

She shook her head as she wondered if it was possible. It’s the perfect wishful thinking for those who find their current environment boring.

Zetsuka loves Genesis Omega Online. For the past 10 months, she’s played intensely. That’s why she doesn’t like the current situation, which is overflowing with cheap knock-offs of Roland. This game should be more free and full of possibilities.

“If it’s this person, then maybe…”

Zetsuka’s cheeks loosen up as she stares at her smartphone.

“I wonder if we can meet tomorrow…if we do, let’s hear what she has to say!”

And while thinking about Johann’s weeklong adventure, Zetsuka fell asleep.
