“Hence, all players will receive 3 Material Exchange Tickets… 20 will be distributed to the participants of the raid.”
Zecca muttered on the other end of a phone call, in an indescribable tone of voice.
Today, on the first day of Golden Week 1, GOO will undergo a major update. The maintenance period started last night, and after 17:00 today, the Third Layer will be implemented.
Then, using the maintenance time, a talk show with the developers and voice actors was held on a video streaming site. There are plans such as quizzes and new content disclosures, but it seems that the problem with the Pirate King Raid was brought up for a bit.
The developers’ reasons were largely what Zecca had hypothesized. Also, the more items in the Pirate King’s storage, the higher his Defense and the slower his Dexterity. On the contrary, if you kept forcing him to spit out items, his Defense would drop while his Dexterity would increase.
Originally, it was expected that a large number of players would participate, but there was a slight problem with the wording of the announcement, and they deeply regretted making the players reluctant to join in.
“Well, if you give out Material Exchange Tickets, everyone but the people in the raid would forgive them,” Zecca said over the phone. “I thought I was a little lucky, too.”
“Yeah, I’m glad it ended peacefully,” Kei said, sighing in relief.
She did not want GOO to shut down.
“If you can use your failures to provide better service, then that’s all that matters,” Johann said. “You don’t expect perfection from the start.”
“That’s really admirable of you, Johann-san,” Zecca said. “After all, members of society talk differently!”
“Yes, that’s right,” Kei said. “If you get angry over every little thing like that, you’ll grow old in no time. So then? As an apology to me, have they announced the plans for implementing new Virtumon summons and a 2nd Collaboration Event?
“Huh… maybe you haven’t forgiven the developers at all?!” Zecca cried.
“I can’t say much about Kon-chan, either,” Kei said.
“Speaking of Kon-san…” Zecca said. “What are you going to do about her?”
It must have been what Kon said then.
It was after the Pirate Raid. Kei thought it would be a shame to get a special item exclusively for her, so she offered to give Solo and Kon something to thank them for their troubles.
And then, Johann handed Solo the Pirate King’s Set, the same equipment she stole from the boss. At first, Solo said, “I can’t accept this, you know!” but finally he broke down and accepted.
“What the hell? WOOOOO! I could become the strongest Saber in the world, YEAAAAHHHHH!” Solo yelled.
As soon as he put on the Pirate King’s set, his sullen face suddenly changed. He looked so boyishly happy.
“No, if y’all become the Pirate King, y’all are going to be a jerk, yeah?” Kon butted in. “Y’all are the Three Sword Saber Solo, right?”
And speaking of Kon: “If Maou-han makes a guild…I’d like to join y’all then, yeah?”
And with that, she left. Where did the seriousness start and the joking end?
“So Johann-san, are you going to create a guild?” Zecca asked anxiously.
Of course, a guild home would be convenient in all manner of ways, like depositing important items there and making it a meeting place. But to create a guild, you needed at least 5 players.
If Johann wanted to make a guild. It wouldn’t be impossible to play with just the 3 of them like before, but it would become more difficult.
So, Kei’s answer was, “Hold off.”
“Are you sure you can’t log in today after all?” Zecca asked.
“Yeah, I have some things to do,” Johann said. “My sister and nephew are coming over… oh, it looks like they’re here.”
Just then, the intercom rang. Zecca on the other end of the phone seemed to hear it too.
“Then, I’m going to hang up.”
“Yeah. Have fun on the Third Layer,” Johann said.
“Right! Before that, I have to break through the Dungeon of Ice! Ooh, I’m all fired up!”
Then, the call ends.
Kei invites her sister and nephew into her apartment.
Her nephew started playing with the monster doll he brought. He’s a good kid who doesn’t need much help.
“Oane,” 2 Kei’s sister said. “I’m going to get straight to the point…”
She looked a little nervous and handed something over. Kei’s eyes widened when she saw it.
“That’s a Virtumon isn’t it… what is this?”
An egg-shaped LCD mobile game device was placed on the table.
The Virtumon has cracks that made it look like it was countless shattered pieces put back together. The LCD panel was new, but nothing was displayed on it.
“What is this?” Johann said.
“This is… your Virtumon, Oane,” Kei’s sister said. “Father destroyed it then, didn’t he?”
That day. It seems that Kei’s sister saw Kei crying to their father. And she picked up the broken bits of Virtumon that had been dumped into the trash, the same pieces that Kei had been too scared to pick out.
According to Kei’s sister, since that day, Kei had become extremely cold. Although, Kei herself was not aware of it. So, Kei’s sister hoped that she would somehow return to how Kei was before, and she thought she would fix the broken Virtumon herself. But it was nearly impossible for at her at 7 or 8 years old to fix the console.
“The more… I tried to fix it… the worse it got… I couldn’t get it back to normal… so I got scared… and hid it behind my desk… and then…”
Just like that, it disappeared from Kei’s sister’s memory. It can not be helped. In the end, Kei hugged her sister because she was so young then.
“I’m sorry…I forgot about it for so long…” Kei’s sister said.
“It’s okay. I understand everything… thank you,” Johann said.
Kei’s sister was reminded of it when she was setting up a VR console here the other day. She went up to Kei’s apartment for the first time, saw the wealth of Virtumon goods in her glass case, and recalled memories from the distant past.
While stroking the head of her crying little sister, Kei suddenly thought: when was the last time she hugged her like this?
“But, you really can do anything, huh?” Kei said.
From Kei’s view as an older sister, she’s proud that her little sister can do anything. But she never thought she’d be able to do something like this.
“Oh, that’s right,” Kei’s sister said. “My husband helped me. Look, he likes plastic models, right?”
“No, come on, even if say that,” Kei said. “I don’t know if you could have.”
“Since my child was born, I’ve been a little more cautious,” Kei’s sister said. “Thinner, powder, what if he swallows a part… all that sort of things, right?”
“Fufu, you’re a real sweetheart, aren’t you?” Kei said.
“Right? My dream is to make a plastic model with my son someday,” Kei’s sister said.
“It’s a lovely dream,” Kei said.
And with that, Kei picks up her Virtumon again.
“It seems that we could have erased the cracks on it if we wanted to, but my husband said, ‘Let’s leave these behind’…” Kei’s sister said.
“I see… he has good taste,” Kei said.
“But… like I thought… no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get it to start,” Kei’s sister said, her face darkening.
It was impossible to revive the electronics due to physical damage and aging. On the other hand, it felt like something was wrong with buying a replacement device and transplanting the contents.
“It’s okay. That kid who was here… is now in a different place,” Johann said.
“Huh… what do you mean?” Kei’s sister said.
As if to interrupt her, Kei’s nephew shouts: “Oh! Auntie Kei has a game! Let me see, let me see!”
Kei’s sister makes a face like, “Ah, now he knows!”
“Give me that!” Kei’s nephew yelled.
“I won’t,” Kei’s sister said. “This is Kei-chan’s treasure!”
The scolding was harsh but her son was always in high spirits and would not back down.
“Games are for kids, aren’t they? Auntie Kei, aren’t you an adult? That’s weird!”
“It’s not weird,” Kei said. “Even adults love what they love.”
“???” Kei’s nephew went.
Kei’s words did not have the cowardice as before. Kei slowly stands up and takes something out of a drawer.
“Nephew, I’ll give you this one,” Kei said.
“Yay!” her nephew yelled.

“Hold up, Oane!” Kei’s sister said.
It was an egg-shaped mobile game console, a Virtual Monsters re-release. It was an unopened, new copy.
“Wow, yay!” Kei’s nephew said. “It’s a game!”
“Aah, and now you’ve given him something so nice,” Kei’s sister said. “Oane, is this alright? You won’t be able to take it back now, can you?”
“It’s alright,” Kei said. “I have 5 more of them.”
“Huh…?” Kei’s sister said.
Kei has been collecting re-releases, even though she hasn’t started any of them up. That she never opened and played with any of them is probably from the guilt of her old partner.
“But he gets bored easily, so he won’t be playing it too much any time soon, you know?” Kei’s sister said.
“It’s fine then, too. It doesn’t have to be Virtumon,” Kei said.
She looks at the Virtumon that has been returned to her.
“It doesn’t matter what it is,” Kei said. “Maybe it’ll be stories, maybe it’ll be many more things… if he could find one thing that he can live for. I’ll be fine with that.”
“… You’re right,” Kei’s sister said. I would be happy if he could have something like Virtumon for you and ホホホーホ・ホーホホfor me.” 3
“That would be… wait a minute,” Johann said. “What did you just say? I thought I heard you say you’re supporting some crazy work just now?”
“Oh, you have a complete Virtumon Blu-Ray box set, Oane. Let’s go watch it, come on!” Kei said.
“Fu, whatever you want,” Johann said. “I’ll get it ready right away.”
“Hey, Son!” Kei’s sister said. “Come here.”
“What’s wrong, Mama?” Kei’s nephew said.
“I’m going to show you something godly!” Kei’s sister said, hugging her nephew while speaking like a certain president and duelist.
“Well then, I’ll start playing it–” Johann said.
And now, a young child is about to be exposed to fiction both new and old. In this way, fictional works continue to be passed on.
Even though it’s Golden Week, Kei still has to go to work except on holidays. After entering the office, Kei turns on her PC, sips a can of coffee, and checks her schedule for the day.
After that, the usual troublesome junior came into the office.
“Oh! Isn’t this a Virtumon?!” Kei’s junior said as she spotted the cracked Virtumon console hanging on Kei’s bag.
“It’s so nostalgic, I used to watch it with my brother when I was a kid,” Kei’s junior said.
And as her voice echoes in the office, male employees the same age as Kei come up to see what’s going on.
“Oh, Aikawa-san, did you like Virtumon!? I do too!”
“The cool Aikawa-san has a mascot character accessory… such gap moe.”
“No, it’s not an accessory, it’s a game. It’s a monster-raising game.”
“I liked Chrono Dragon the best.”
“No, Omega Prime is the best.”
“When I was a kid, I played a game where a human was stronger than a dragon.”
“Oh, that one, huh? That was pretty good, too.”
“Oh, that one. That’s pretty good too.”
The 30 and 20-somethings in the office are boiling over with excitement. The middle-aged generation stared at them, but the passion doesn’t stop.
“That’s right, they’re going to do a new anime from April next year.”
“Are you serious!? I heard that the movie is coming out in February. Are you going to see it, Aikawa-san?”
“Yes,” Kei said. “In that case, so long as the movie’s airing, I think I’ll go on paid vacation for all the days.”
“Hahaha, Aikawa-san is still joking, too…you are joking, right?”
“Aikawa-san’s paid vacation day balance is maxed out.”
Even after that, both male and female employees were talking about Virtumon, taking advantage of the fact that it was still before the formal start of the work day. Seeing that, Kei laughs softly.
(That’s right. I’ve always thought I was abnormal, but… I’m totally normal.)
The excitement knows no bounds. They probably won’t stop until the director yells at them. The junior who completely failed to get into the circle of conversation sulked a bit and said
“The first generation was godly but the last episode of V2 was shit, isn’t it? And then the humans evolve into Virtumon, and I don’t understand why… huh?”
The junior unintentionally touches on the taboos. The office goes quiet.
“You… you said something you shouldn’t have said.”
“I’m from a V2 guy, you hear?”
“Don’t talk if you haven’t even watched that closely.”
Apparently, Kei’s junior has earned the wrath of several people.
“Bieeeeeennnn, Aikawa-senpaaaiii, saaaavvveeee meeeee. What is even wrong with you people…?!” Kei’s junior yelled.
“Oh my, you,” Kei said. “You still don’t realize what you just said, didn’t you?”
“Huh, Aikawa-san, you’re scaring me… I’ve never seen that scary face of yours before… HIEEEEEE, SOMEONE HELP ME!”
On this day, it is said that Kei’s standing position among the juniors changed from “an easy-going senior who is easy to push your work onto” to “a dangerous woman if you get her mad for the wrong thing”.
“What are you doing?” Kei’s sister said.
“I’m looking after the egg,” Kei’s nephew said.
Kei’s sister was doing housework, and her son was supposed to have been watching TV, but was staring at something else.
“My, my, did you turn on that Virtumon?” Kei’s sister said.
“It’s fine, isn’t it?” Kei’s nephew said. “I got it as a present, so I’m opening it.”
“I don’t mind,” Kei’s sister said. “Raise it properly, okay? Mama will take it if you leave it alone.”
“Yeah,” Kei’s nephew said. “I’ll raise it properly and show it to Auntie Kei.”
As Kei’s sister peered in, a 16×16 dot egg was reflected on the screen, and it was moving like it was shaking.
“I wonder if it’s going to hatch soon… I’m looking forward to it,” Kei’s nephew said.
Kei’s sister was reminded of how she used to look over Kei’s shoulder as she did the same. It was so nostalgic that she stopped her household chores and waited for the hatching with her soon.
“I can’t wait to see it soon,” Kei’s nephew said.
“So do I,” Kei’s sister said.
Kei’s sister wonders how many minutes it took to hatch. She thinks it could be an hour and it could be about a day. When she was a kid, the days were very, very long and each one felt like an eternity. In retrospect, the sense of time is very vague.
Beep… beep… beep…
At that time, a nostalgic electronic sound begins to ring. It seems that it will hatch soon. A light shines on his son’s face.
Beep…beep…beep…
Be-beep… be-beep… be-beep…
…… Bi-beep.
“Ah, it’s hatched!”
“… Mokyu?”
Volume 1, “An endless tale,” Complete
T/N: I’m going to be changing my update schedule to something slower, like 1/week. The series started short and easy to translate before the chapters started getting longer and longer.
If any translator wants to pick this up in my stead, please, go ahead. I feel that finishing Vol 1 would be a good jumping-off point if I’ve helped drum up enough interest.
The next few arcs haven’t caught my interest because it gets a bit repetitive, but the later arcs seem interesting. For those curious, the 2nd Virtumon Collaboration Event is the current arc and has some pretty hilarious jokes, like what I call Zecca’s “friendship stick” for monsters.
