My eyes are so heavy. Why is it so cold in here? Why is it so dark? Where am I? These were just a few of the thoughts that ran through my mind as I slowly regained my consciousness.

Letting out a small groan as I moved my upper body to sit up, suddenly a sharp strike of pain ran rampant in my body like a bolt of feral lightning. At that moment everything came back to me. Not just the duel, my close death experience, killing a man, no, everything since I came to this world. It all came rushing towards me like a roaring tsunami.

I slowly laid my aching body back down on the cold stone floor. A tear slid down my cheek. One turned to two, and two turned into a torrent. I couldn’t control myself, the sobs raked through my body. This situation is so fu*cked, why? Why me? Of all the people who had to be pulled from their world, why me?

Instead of being gifted with an OP system, I was cast into a world where death was always around the corner. No life saving measures, no last minute miracles, if I didn’t have that knife I would’ve been the one who was dead. As soon as I thought about that I immediately turned my body and hurled whatever was in my stomach. I still remember the feeling of that dagger entering his flesh. At first there was a bit of resistance from his skin, but then the knife pierced through, it felt like cutting into a piece of chicken with a sharp knife. Not easy, but not enough effort necessary to be considered hard. Why? Why the fu*k did I offer a life or death match? Because the system offered me a mission? A random mission, with a reward unknown, and for that reason I killed a person, took away a life.

I turned and hurled again, my body was in intense pain, but I welcomed it, it felt like punishment. Punishment for the horrible things I’ve done since coming here.

I rolled back and forth, there was an intense pounding in my head. As if a bell was constantly being rung inside my skull. I grabbed my hair tightly, as if to begin ripping it out. I felt my mind cracking, breaking like fragile glass. I felt a scream growing in my chest, one to release the pressure I was feeling.

Just at that moment I heard a grating and scratching sound. I looked towards my right and for the first time noticed an average sized metal door, reminiscent of a jail cell.

A man, near 2 meters tall, a bit scrawny, with a scruffy red beard to match his ginger hair, walked in slowly and looked around. As his eyes landed on me, surrounded by throw-up, and face stained with tears, he sighed.

He walked towards me at a steady pace, neither too fast nor too slow. When he was standing directly over me he crouched and looked me in the eyes as he said, “Hey buddy, it’s nice to see you finally awake, I thought we’d lost you! Your name is Toska right? My name is Barci, how are you feeling?”

I looked at him silently for a bit, digesting the things he said to me. After a moment of silence that stretched on almost to the point of awkwardness, I began to rapidly fire questions his way.

“Where am I? What happened to Miss Clarissa? When can I get out of here? What’s going on?”

Barci laughed, a bit sadly, as he said, “The life of a slave is truly sad. I’ll explain the situation to you. On the bright side, you won your duel, after a bit of back and forth you managed to plunge a dagger into your opponent's neck. It was quite a blood pumping match! As for what’s going on and where is your former mistress, those questions can be answered at the same time. After you won your match, I knew I had to have you. You see in Anricha there aren’t many forms of entertainment left, so in order to stave off boredom we’ve had to be… creative. There are multiple fight clubs, and arenas that feature duels, and fighting to the death against individuals, teams, and in some cases even wild animals like tigers, and leapers! My stake in all of this is assembling a team to participate in this industry. To make it simple, think of it as a basketball team from the Light Era…. but maybe a kid like you doesn’t even know what basketball is… mmm, whatever! Point is I’ve bought you off of your old mistress and now you’ll serve me.”

In that moment an inexplicable anger covered me, barely managing to keep it in. I whispered, “how much?”

“Hm?” Barci asked

“HOW MUCH!” I screamed “HOW MUCH DID THAT BIT*H SELL ME FOR?!?!”

Barci, startled by my outburst replied, “A slave usually goes for about 3 atums here in Armageddon, and a fighter slave goes for about 7 atums, but since you were injured when I bought you off of her, I paid 5 atums.”

“THAT WHO*E! THAT FUC*ING BIT*H! FU*K! FU*K! FU*K!” I roared while lashing out at my surroundings. All I’ve done, I thought as I looked at my now bloody knuckles, the shame, humiliation, subservience, even putting all of my money on the line for that bit*h. Just to be tossed aside when offered a few atums. I gave 12 silver atums, since I won, the money 10x, which means I made 120 silver atums, which is 12 gold atums. I made her twice the amount she sold me for. FU*K!

I was a fool! This isn’t my world. These people have no honour, no morals. This place is filled with hate, greed, slavery and all forms of atrocities. I’m no idealist that believes that the Old World was any better, but at least there was some facade of civility. I should’ve known that when the lights go out, humans show their true nature.

Fu*k this world! If I can escape this hell there’s nothing I won't do to get out of here! Whoever gets in my way I’ll tear them apart and slaughter everyone they know! If I can’t leave, I’ll make blood rain in this world, I’ll force the world to become the way I remember, to become the place that I’d been ripped from!

Barci, who’d been silently watching this whole time, had a smile that was slowly growing, encompassing his face.

“In you, Toska…” he said evenly, “I see a fighter, not one to be bound right? Not one to be chained?”

I simply stared at him with a venomous gaze. He was just like the rest of this motherfuc*ers not a single one of these people can be trusted.

“Hahahaha! Yes! YES! That look in your eyes! The same look you had when you killed that man! That hunger to survive, the will to do what’s necessary, the willingness to tear apart anything that stands in your way. That woman messed up when she sold you, in you I see a star, one that’s soon to be born. A star that’ll shine so bright that no matter where in the universe you stand you’ll see it.” Barci claimed

“I want to nurture that star, and stand close to it, like the moon, using your shine to shine a bit myself! I’ll make you an offer Toska, fight for me! Win 100 fights and I’ll release you, no questions, and I’ll even pay you a percentage for each fight that you win. What do you say?”

I slowly considered his offer, then I asked, “Why? If you wanted you could force me to fight? Why are you making this harder on yourself than it has to be?”

Barci replied, “In the Light Era, my grandfather was a businessman, and he passed that knowledge to my father, and my father passed that knowledge to me. The most essential part of any business is the people, and a person is always more efficient if they are interested in completing the task. There’s nothing I can do to stop you from killing yourself, or even simply not fighting. But I can offer you something you want, while getting something that I want, that’s what we call a good deal! So… what do you say?”

If at first I wasn’t convinced by him, then after the speech I began to consider. The thing that made me decide to take the leap was what the system announced.

System: New Mission Issued!

System: Mission: Win 100 Fights

System: Reward: Communication Technology

System: Accept Mission? Y/N

As I accepted the mission I looked Barci fiercely in the eyes and said, “Barci, you have a deal.”

We looked at each other and laughed, loudly and maniacally, like a pair of insane men.

After that things moved quickly, Barci moved me into his home. It was a small shack on the outskirts of the administration zone. Barci had made a gamble on me and gave up his life savings to purchase me. It was a two bedroom house, with a small kitchen, and living room area mashed together.

When I finally got to lay on a real bed for the first time since coming to this world, I almost broke down again.  I lay facing the tearing and cheap ceiling, slowly looking back, thinking and analysing everything that's happened so far. I’ve been so naive, I accepted everything that’s happened to me as if it was normal. I allowed myself to be used, abused, manipulated and led by the nose, seeing myself as someone meant to go through hardship. Meant to be hurt and put down… Well I refuse, the me now won’t be subject to anyone ever again! The me now will take his fate into his own hands… and handle anyone who thinks differently.

“System! I yelled in my mind.”

System: Awaiting Hosts’ Commands

“System, roll for my random reward… from- from the first blood mission.”

System: Rolling For Random Reward

System: Reward: Claymore Sword Style Manual

System: Transferring Content To Host

The warm trickling feeling on my head lasted for a moment as I learned the ins-and-outs of the CSS (Claymore Sword Style)

“System,” I said once again “I have some questions, and I need answers. I need them now.”

Message To Readers:

I’ll be honest, I’m having a very severe case of writer's block. I’m sorry if the quality/length of this chapter isn’t up to standard. I’ve begun reading a lot more combat and intrigue novels, manhwa, and TV shows to gain inspiration and experience on the writing style necessary to make a decent combat and intrigue arc. Once again please remember that this is my first novel of this size/scale/depth, so I want to do it right. Nothing worse than a novel that starts great then turns shit. If any of you guys have advice or anything that’d help out I’d be extremely appreciative. Hope you enjoyed the chapter. Ok bye.
