The next day, Jiazhen came to the hospital with Xiaodi, who was still in the mainland. I found myself unable to hold proper conversation.
When Piao Zheng came, he gently hugged me, his eyes round with distress. When he saw that I was still wearing the same clothes from the previous night, he went back out, then came back some time later with a change of clothes that I had left at his place.
Five days passed, and Ye Lin still didn’t wake up. I stayed with him the entire time, waiting for him to regain consciousness. During this entire period, his parents only visited once, then never again.
I knew that someone was secretly helping me because the hospital and the police had come to know of the situation. It could only be him.
On the fifth night. I couldn’t sleep at all because the doctor had told me earlier that he might be in danger if he didn’t wake up soon. As the night turned to dawn, I finally gave up and went for a walk to try and calm my thoughts. I walked down the hallway and out of the hospital, then sat on the steps outside the door. I looked up at the sky where there were still a couple of lingering stars, and took a deep breath.
Suddenly I heard a commotion behind me and turned to look back into the hospital. Several doctors and nurses were running towards the ICU in the east wing. My heart skipped a beat, and I rushed to stand up, a bout of dizziness took hold of me, and I had to steady myself against the wall for a moment, before rushing to Ye Lin’s ward.
I was stopped outside his room by the nurse, and I could only stand helplessly outside the glass window to watch. A group of white-clad medical staff had circled the hospital bed busily checking vitals.
I looked at the bed and was met with a pair of black eyes shining like stars.
Two days later, Ye Lin was fully awake and recovering well.
“The doctor said that you can only eat liquid food for now.”
“What a pity,” Ye Lin said hoarsely.
“Do you want me to get a wheelchair and push you around in the hospital’s garden?”
“That’s more like it!”
As I pushed him along he garden path, many people glanced our way, their eyes focusing on who sat in the chair.
Finally, someone ran up and asked him excitedly for an autograph.
I was amazed.
Ye Lin smiled proudly, “I’m a star.”
“Aren’t you just a model?” I teased.
“Wrong, I’m a supermodel!”
Ye Miao’s condition became stable over the following days, and she eventually woke up as well. After he went to see her, he told me how proud he was of his sister and how brave and strong she was. I listened quietly as I looked at him, and I couldn’t help feeling a bit teary eyed as I thought of Ye Miao lying down in her bed.
That evening Piao Zheng visited again.
He hugged me, “He may have been under a lot of pressure over the past two years, so that was why…”
Piao Zheng paused, and then said earnestly, “It is obvious that you two like each other, why do you always have to fight it? Give him a chance. Although Ye Lin doesn’t portray seriousness on the surface, he has a delicate mind, and he is really kind to you. Anjie, no matter what, your brother just wants you to be happy.”
“I know bro.”
It was all I could say.
After Piao Zheng left, I went back into the ward, and saw Ye Lin sitting on his bed with his head bowed, looking at his fingertips.
“What’s wrong? Feeling listless?” I walked over.
“You’re still going back to him, aren’t you?”
The light cast shadows under his eyelashes.
“Ye Lin,” I sat on the edge of the bed and hugged him gently, “I will always care about you,” I said softly.
He reached over and hugged me tightly.
Later that day, I was washing my face in a bathroom outside of Ye Lin’s room. When I walked out, I glimpsed several men in suits and leather shoes standing in the east corridor. Instinctively, my heart became a little unsettled, and I walked over quickly.
“….rest well,” a low voice said from inside his room.
I slowed down as I approached the door, but in that instant a nurse walked out of the room, with her head turned back. We collided and the medical tray she had been holding crashed to the ground with a loud bang.
Everyone around us turned to stare.
Glancing at the nurse’s blushing face, I leaned down to pick up the items off the ground. She squatted down to help.
“I’m sorry.”
I forced a smile, “It was my fault, I stopped too suddenly.”
“Jian Anjie, come here,” Ye Lin called to me from inside the room with a smile on his face and his arm outstretched. I stood up and walked over, brushing past his hand.
“Jian Anjie, I’m thirsty. Pour me a glass of water.”
I walked over to the table and poured him a glass, hesitating for just a second before handing it to him.
“Don’t worry, I won’t let you feed me,” Ye Lin laughed and took a sip.
“Ah, I forgot to introduce you. These are some bosses from my company,” he pointed to the two people in the room.
“So you are the ‘Jian Anjie’.”
I recognized Nian Yi’s deep, smiling voice, and turned around helplessly, “Mr. Nian…”
“I don’t mind if you call me Big Brother Nian,” Nian Yi said, glancing at the person next to him.
I felt the second man’s gaze pass over me lightly before turning away.
“It’s good to have a boss who makes a lot of money. You can still get paid even if you don’t model anymore,” Ye Lin said from behind me, his voice bright with mischief.
“Yeah young man, you should really thank your boss,” said Nian Yi.
“General Manager Nian, didn’t I portray how grateful I am just now?” Ye Lin laughed, then took my hand and pulled me onto the bed, “You’re blocking my view. I can’t see the front.”
“Your strength has recovered a lot,” I said.
“It’s mainly due to someone taking good care of me,” he said without hesitation.
I was quiet.
My eyes caught the person standing in front of us slowly clench his hand into a fist.
“Let’s go.”
He was still indifferent and calm, but his voice was as cold as ice.
Nian Yi nodded, “Yes boss.”
The arrogant figure walked out of the ward first, his steps walking with no hesitation.
When only Ye Lin and I were left in the ward, he asked, “Are you angry?”
I wasn’t sure why people kept asking me if I was angry.
“No.”
“Even if you’re angry, you won’t tell me now, will you?”
“Rest.” I uncapped his pill bottle and dropped a couple into my palm.
“You know I can’t sleep at all right now!”
“So what do you want me to say?” I turned to look at him. “No, I’m not very happy.”
Ye Lin’s expression looked very hurt, and there was a hint of desolation in his eyes, “Are you going after him?”
I looked down at the tablets sliding between my fingers, “Yes.”
“If I may ask, when?”
“I’ll be leaving in the evening.”
Ye Lin slumped against the bed’s headrest, his momentum from a moment ago completely extinguished.
“Go.”
“Take your medicine first.”
“I can’t die again!”
“Take your medicine,” I insisted.
Ye Lin suddenly laughed, “If you have to leave, you can leave now, so that I won’t get upset when I look at you!”
I sighed, “Ye Lin,” I injected a serious tone into my voice, “I told you a long time ago, I told you,” I gently stroked his soft black hair, “When I fall in love with a person, I will love him with all my heart and I will never betray that person. Ye Lin, the one I love now is him.”
