“Who’s that?”

A calm beauty had waltzed into the classroom. Her skin was white as snow, her hair was even whiter, and her steely purple eyes held a forward gaze as she made way for her desk.

“Who, her? You mean you don’t know?”

The group of boys watched this girl walk past calmly. Her high heels were surprisingly silent, making no noise as she breezed past them. Clasped against her chest was an assortment of books: Potions 101, An Introduction to Enchantment, Advanced Defense and Offense Magic. There was a fourth mystery book with no words on its binding.

“That’s the Ice Queen.”

“Ice Queen?” The youngest of the group questioned in awe.

“Yeah. She’s easy on the eyes, huh?”

Abel Wolfe was a fluffy haired freshman with eyes of hazel, the toned body of an athlete, and the personality of a mischievous child-turned-young adult. He’d gotten into the college by pure luck, barely passing any of the subjects other than Offensive Magic, which he’d almost been top of the class in, right under the infamous Ice Queen.

“Is she a sophomore like you guys?” Able inquired. He hadn’t paid much attention to the scoring of his grade other than him passing and being granted admission.

“Bro, are you serious? She’s a freshman. Though, she’s one of the only students here on a scholarship. She’s in a whole different league from you, so I guess it makes sense that you don’t know about her. You are—” Abel looked up as his friend eyed him with a pitious gaze. “You are you after all.”

Before Abel could retort, in walked a sloppy woman in a wrinkly burgundy lab coat, glasses with lenses that seemed much too big and a frame held together by duct tape in several places. Her lab coat was also much too big; it hung lazily over her bony shoulders and dragged behind her as she stepped behind the podium.

“Good morning everyone,” she started. Her voice was soft and raspy, but it still carried around the auditorium without fail, likely due to some vocifery enhancement spell. “I hope you all found your way here just fine. You’ll see me around the campus a lot, I kinda live here.” She laughed nervously, clearly intimidated by all the eyes on her. “I’m Carmela Giovanni, but please call me Ms. Giovanni from now on. I’m the professor for offensive and defensive Magic. Before we get started, does anyone have any questions for me?”

No one had any questions, so Ms. Giovanni had everyone jot down notes on how defense magic would manifest itself once invoked and how it was used to protect yourself, or those around you. As Abel wrote notes, his eyes strayed away from his sloppy handwriting over to the Ice Queen, he didn’t know her real name. She kept her eyes on the professor while her pen wrote away furiously in her notebook. What kind of magic is that, Abel wondered.

Class went on for an hour or so before finally coming to a close. The Ice Queen was the first one out, heading towards the cafeteria for lunch. Abel had followed after her briskly, only to lose her amongst the sea of students.

“I don’t think she’d appreciate having a stalker.” Abel’s friends had rejoined him for lunch. They were a mixture of other freshmen and a few sophomores. All of them had chosen the school’s pizza over leaving campus for lunch and had seated themselves at a round table.

On either side of Abel were the famous twins of the freshmen class, Damion and Deidre La Croix. The La Croix twins favored each other greatly, dressing and styling themselves the same every day, speaking the same way and eating the same things; the only thing that separated them was their taste in women. The twins were tall and lanky, their brown hair hung messily as if they’d just woken up, and their white faces were spotted with freckles.

Directly across from Abel was Solomon Callisto, a sophomore. Solomon was a burly wizard who spent most of his time in the gym when he wasn’t studying magic. He was a your body is your temple kind of guy, who ate healthy meals and got no less than eight hours of sleep a night. Though he was often ridiculed by his friends for being so uptight, he remained steadfast with his mindset, never faltering unless it was in the face of his beloved Selena.

There were two others seated amongst the group, but no one really knew them. They’d just gravitated toward everyone else.

“I don’t wanna sit with you guys,” Abel whined as he bit into his pizza. “I wanna eat with her.” He motioned to the lonesome Ice Queen who was seated at a long table with about a dozen other girls. Everyone around her spoke loudly, laughing at jokes and giggling at pictures on their smartphones. But the Ice Queen sat silently, not paying attention to the ones around her, nor being conversed with. It seemed like no one was paying her attention anyway, rather, they were there because she was there.

“Give it up,” the twins said in unison and laughed.

    “But—”

“Unless you want to get turned to stone like the last dude that tried talking to her.” It was less of a question, and more of a definite likelihood.

It was a story that Abel had heard before, but he didn’t know it was her who’d done it. The story was that at the opening ceremony, one of the male students had been harassing one of the female students, and she’d turned him to stone with intricate advanced level offensive magic. It’d taken the professors several hours to figure out how to reverse the spell. The female student hadn’t been punished, and the male student had been given two demerits.

“Bet he didn’t look like me,” Abel said confidently, brushing his hand across his low twisted hair and putting on a sly smile. Everyone laughed at him before encouraging him to try something.

“Abel, if you can get her to say ONE WORD to you bro, I’ll do your laundry for a whole month!” Damion said and offered his hand. That was a bet Abel wouldn’t pass up since he barely did his laundry anyway.

“Watch and learn.” He  smirked, grasping Damion’s hand firmly before heading over to where the Ice Queen was seated. To his surprise, a seat had freed up next to her, which he sat down in.

The cafeteria was filled with the roar of over two hundred students, but the Ice Queen’s table had gone completely silent. All eyes were on Abel. And he eyed the Ice Queen before opening his juice and sipping from it ever so slowly.

“Um, can we help you?” One of the girls at the table called out. Abel glanced around, looking for who’d spoken to him. Angry blue eyes sitting on a pale, pudgy face hawked him down.

“Um, you can’t,” Abel mocked, “but she can.”

The Ice Queen was reading a nameless book with black pages. Abel gazed at it curiously before noticing that her plate was still full. “Hey, you gonna eat that?” He said, eyeing the cheesy garlic bread and slices of breaded baked chicken hungrily. She continued to read her book, which drew giggles from the others seated around them. “Well then, don’t mind if I do.”

Abel grabbed the cheesy bread, which was still surprisingly warm, and went to take a big bite out of it. He didn’t notice the sudden burst of swirling orange magic as he chomped down on the bread. The entire table burst into a fit of high pitched laughter, and the lunchroom went silent other than the girls laughing at him. Abel jumped up from his seat as a hamster sprung from his mouth to the table and scuttled away from the excitement. His cheesy bread had turned into a hamster! He looked at the girls with fury, asking which one of them had done it. They all motioned to the Ice Queen. “Impossible, I didn’t hear anyone invoke a spell!”

The Ice Queen stood suddenly, the mystery book clutched in her right hand, and a cup of juice in her left hand. Not even passing a glance at Abel, she headed away from the group in silence. Abel gritted his teeth, drawing a detailed mahogany wand from his pocket. All twelve inches of the wand were wrapped in a series of golden runes, and at the core of the wand was a dragon’s tear.

“Hey, what the hell are you about to do!” One of the girls from the table asked quickly. Abel aimed his wand at the back of the Ice Queen, murmuring a spell briskly. Of waves and rivers, flow with ease.

The tiled floor beneath the Ice Queen changed into a pool of deep water, which would have sank any normal unsuspecting person. But the Ice Queen was far from normal. She turned to face Abel, with her mouth twisted into a smirk across her usual blank face. She was standing on top of the water, drawing ooo’s and aaahh’s from the crowd of students. Abel spotted his friends snickering at him; and he was a very sore loser.

The Ice Queen was still holding her full juice, which she had raised to take a sip from. Abel saw his chance. Like shooting stars, burst forth! The entire cafeteria burst into audible gasps as the bottle of juice exploded in the Ice Queen’s hand, drenching her clothes, hair, and the book she’d been holding on to. As silence ensued, Abel eyed his friends with a look of success, but they returned his gaze with looks of fear and regret, shaking their heads.

When it came to offensive magic, Abel was as clever as a wizard could get, and wasn’t afraid to fight dirty. Instead of sending spells back and forth in a boring barrage, he’d find ways to outmaneuver his opponents, using anything he could see against them. The Ice Queen, on the other hand, fought with style and grace. She loved to overpower her opponents, forcing them into hopeless submission. She was a monster in its purest form, and she’d set her now predatory gaze upon Abel.

Abel was an idiot, but he was no fool. He could immediately sense the menacing energy swirling forth from the Ice Queen. Her calm purple eyes were now wide with fury. Abel had taken up a defensive stance, immediately throwing up an advanced barrier he’d remembered from class before falling asleep. But that barrier was no match for the witch in front of him, and he knew it.

The entire cafeteria watched in wide eyed horror as the Ice Queen raised her hand, pointing a skinny finger towards Abel before firing off a sharp blast of swirling, deep red magic. It came forth with such force that it left a black streak embedded in the floor all the way up to Abel, who’d crossed his arms in front of his body in helpless defense. Just as the beam of energy would have pierced through Abel's body, it dissipated suddenly in a burst of starry white rain.

“Now, now, Ms. Tourneau. You know killing your peers results in immediate expulsion as well as legal action, don’t you?” A haughty voice called from somewhere above the dozens of heads. Abel looked up to see a gorgeous woman step forth from a light in the ceiling. Her long red hair danced magically as she descended between Abel and the Ice Queen.

This mysterious beauty was none other than Andromeda Morgenstern; headmaster of Swinescar College of Invocation and Alchemy.
