Chapter 2: Chapter 1: Sharing a Cup of Wine

4 years later.

"I had wished to find something to cure my boredom..."

The young man stares at the pack of wild animals dejectedly.

In the dead of night, his voice cried out in slight annoyance.

"But a Demon Bloodmoon was not what I had in mind."

A man dressed in a silky white cultivator robe trimmed in gold held a glittering silver blade in front of him.

"Don't come closer-"

The creatures that hid in the darkness growl menacingly, they who were once corpses, were summoned back to life by the curse of the Bloodmoon.

Unable to contain its hunger, a wolf pounces forward.

The man swings his blade with expertise, but his lack of experience shakes his arms and his blade misses the wolf's throat.

The man gulps.

Just as the rest of the corpses were ready to attack, a figure dressed in blue bearing a glittering silver sword appeared in front of him.

With a swing of his arm, he expertly controlled his divine sword to pierce through all of the zombified, immediately getting rid of the danger.

With a single look, one can tell this gentleman's clothing meant he was of a commoner's birth.

However, with a sword like that and such a refined face, I'd never dare to assume.

"Thank you to this great young master for your gracious act of saving me. This one won't forget-"

"Are you alright?"

They spoke over each other.

The cultivator in white and gold gave a humorous smile at the other.

"You first."

"Oh, um, are you alright?"

"Only thanks to you... May I ask your name?"

"This one's name is Yuan Hengning. I am but a passing commoner, going on a journey. I simply saw someone in need of help and did what I was supposed to. Think nothing of it."

The sudden breeze brushes at the bamboo leaves, the only sounds that can be heard are that of leaves swishing against each other as well as the dissipation of the zombified. He was mesmerized by the moonlight that reflected off the other man's hair, his sword held against his back emitting a faint glow.

He bows courteously, "My name is Xu Canzhi. If not for you, I would have perished tonight by those treacherous monsters. As thanks for saving the eldest son of the Xingjun sect's sect leader, allow me to treat brother Hengning to some wine?"

"Ah, so this gentleman is a prestigious young master? If this young master treats this commoner to wine, I am in no place to reject." Hengning cups his fist and offers a respectful bow.

"Your sword work was impressive! May I ask what sect you came from?"

"Hengning practiced under no sect, it was all the teachings of my father."

Canzhi nods in understanding. What a striking night it was. The celestial heavens were dabbled with brilliant stars complementing the blood-red moon. As the two men made their way toward Xingjun city all the while striking up conversations with each other.

Loud chatter emits from a nearby bar. The streets are dimly lit with lanterns, only a few can be seen prowling the streets besides bar and brothel customers.

"This bar is well known for their homemade wine," Canzhi pointed his arm at a colorful restaurant brimming with customers.

"After you."

The two stops at the restaurant and order a few small dishes and jars of wine to fill their stomachs. The aroma of the food enticed Hengning who had not eaten to a full for days while on the road, Canzhi watched as his friend wolfed down the dishes.

"Come on, brother Hengning. Won't you touch just a bit of wine? Just these dishes won't do anything. Wine is what brings it all together!"

Hengning shook his head firmly, not touching a single drop. "Sorry, but I'll have to decline. I cannot afford to be drunk at such a time."

Canzhi observed the man closely without making a sound. Under the mellow and soft lights, the two men said not a word as they stared quietly at each other.

Finally, Canzhi spoke up. "Although you say you are not, you indeed have the essence of a righteous and honorable cultivator. Your father must be very proud of you."

Hengning bowed his head in response. "Thank you for the kind words. I am not doing much, just abiding by the rules."

Canzhi moves closer to Hengning as if he was closing in to tell a secret. Hengning feels the heat of the other man, almost touching his clothes. But before he could utter a word, Canzhi opens his mouth and tells him something in a whisper,

"I've heard rumors that this shop obtains such a taste through cultivation enhancing nectar that can only be found on the flowers planted around the Huashui healing sect."

Canzhi remarks.

Hengning still made no movement, but responded in a clear and concise voice,

"Brother Canzhi, you must know it is not very respectful to just believe in such rumors."

"Ah, you're no fun. Who knows what really goes on behind our backs? It would make a huge profit to anyone who attempted. If the rumors are true, I wonder how well off that scheming pilferer would be."

Canzhi chuckles and finally moves away, and Hengning smiles and relaxes seeing the other man's good mood.

"So where is brother Hengning going? This forest path leads directly to the Dengxian sect."

"I am on my way to Xueba sect, my father has sent me to retrieve a cultivation manual from an old friend."

Hengning becomes silent for a minute but in the end, decides to say,

"I am also searching for a man by the name of Ai Ze."

Canzhi's eyes flash with curiosity, and he immediately begins to formulate a plan,

"Oh aren't you in luck! I happened to be going the same way!"

Canzhi lies blatantly.

Hengning doesn't catch on,

"If that is that so, it seems I must escort the two of us over then, these nights will only get more dangerous, the Demon's Bloodmoon is only in its beginning phase."

"Oh?"

Canzhi immediately felt annoyed in his heart. Did I just get underestimated...

"Are you saying I can't protect myself? My good brother Hengning, it is not smart to underestimate people, especially the one that's treating you to a drink~"

Canzhi jokingly leans in closer to Hengning just as he was lifting his bowl of wine to get a drink.

"Alright alright,"

Hengning pushes Canzhi back down with the hilt of his sword, finally having enough.

"When there are enemies around, just stand behind me and offer support."

"I'll do just tha- wait." His eyes widen in surprise at the rebuttal as Hengning picks up his bowl of wine.

"I won't drink, but salute to you instead. Cheers."

"Brother Hengning... I appreciate the gesture."

Before Canzhi can retort, Hengning lifts his bowl and urges Canzhi to do the same.

Canzhi sighs in defeat and taps the edge of his wine bowl to Hengning's, this action producing a resounding clink solidifying their contract of friendship.

Canzhi prepares rides for them and as they take their horses out of the city, Canzhi looks back to the tip of the Xingjun sect mountain. His mother's hatred and his mission... is it connected to the man that Yuan Hengning is searching for?

This trip might reveal more than he needed, and it may entangle them in a web way thicker than it seems on the surface.

"Let's go now."

Hengning climbs onto his horse,

"Yeah."

Canzhi follows closely after him.

They don't even wait for the sun to break the horizon, swiftly they embark on the path to the XueBa sect.

We switched the last characters of the sects around so that there is some uniqueness- if all of the sects were just named "mountain, mountain, mountain," that would've been boring. In English however, it would be a hassle to use all the names individually, so 'sect' is what we will use.
