In the distance, a dark cloud was hanging above the sea, and the ocean currents swirled the plankton carcasses, rolling the foam and dead aquatic plants on the shore. Their carcasses hung on the reef cracks. Pushed by the tide, those hair-like aquatic plants stretched and curled in the shadows, making the whole island look as if it was surrounded by a dense coil of snakes that gnawed at them.
“The weather is going to worsen,” Li Sinian noted with concern. “Let’s go to a high place first. I don’t know where the freshwater on this small island flows from. If it rains heavily and the tide rises, I’m worried our water source will be polluted by sea water.”
The three of them walked around the island against the strong wind, and then to the hill in the center of the island. This island didn’t look big but it could still tire the people exploring on foot. Fang Daichuan was okay. Toughened through rain and wind while filming, this amount of exercise doesn’t matter for him. But for Ding Zihui it was a little bit difficult. The two men ended up dragging her to the top of the hill.
Ding Zihui leaned on her knees and panted, “This mountain… this mountain is different from the ones I usually climb.”
“What are you talking about?” Fang Daichuan looked around silently. The plants on this mountain—no it can’t be called a mountain, should be called a slope—were quite luxuriant. This made him feel cautious of whether or not there could be any animals in the thickets. He then casually said to Ding Zihui, “You’ve only climbed scenic spots where steps have already been built for tourists. Do you seriously think all mountains were originally like that?”
Once they climbed over the hill, the villa they lived in was in full view before them. Li Sinian kept his eyes on the villa, inadvertently slipped and almost fell straight down. Fang Daichuan quickly grabbed him.
The gravel and sand at his feet rolled all the way down. Li Sinian used Fang Daichuan’s arm to steady himself, and glanced down, a cold sweat appearing on his forehead. Between them and the villa, there was a deep ravine. Although the mountain was not high, the crack was still at least a few hundred meters deep. There was a long stream cutting through the middle and looking from above you couldn’t tell how deep the water was.
“Fuck!” Fang Daichuan was shaking in fear. He turned around and pulled all of them back. The three stood on the side, watching the scavenging birds screaming and hovering in the deep cracks. “Do you think this is natural or man-made?”
Li Sinian took a small step forward and carefully observed the ravine. “Even if it was excavated manually, it might be quite old. The raised rocks below are covered in bird droppings. There are small trees growing between the cracks of the rocks and their branches are thick.”
The sound of gurgling water emerged from deep underneath.
“There is an underground river below,” Li Sinian frowned and gazed at the gaping crevice. “Unfortunately, I don’t understand geography. I don’t know if the underground river on this island is connected to the sea.”
As he was talking, muffled thunder sounded overhead from the faraway sky.
Li Sinian raised his head, and lightning split the thick black clouds, followed by a boom of thunder. The air became humid and carried with it an earthy smell.
“Have you been here when you checked the island?” Fang Daichuan asked Li Sinian in a low voice, seeing Ding Zihui squatting by a small pool in the distance. He couldn’t tell what she was doing.
Li Sinian measured the thickness of the tree trunk with his hands. He wanted to see if he could make a small raft if the trunk could bear the weight. Hearing that, he also looked at Ding Zihui’s back and replied, “No, this mountain is not high, so you can see everything clearly. I never came up, who knew there was such a ravine hidden here.”
Fang Daichuan was silent for a while. He really didn’t want to think in that direction, but he couldn’t ignore the thought. He struggled for a while, and finally asked, “You said… your father went missing on this island?”
Li Sinian stopped what he was doing. He was stunned for a moment, glanced at the ravine reflexively, and then quickly moved his eyes away.
“Do you think he would…” Fang Daichuan cautiously began.
Li Sinian took two steps forward, stood on the edge of the cliff and peered down. The wind blowing from the bottom of the stream was loud, like the moans from an abyss. Another flash of lightning exploded from the horizon, heavy rain started pouring down, and the dry earth was splashed into tatters by raindrops. Li Sinian’s light amber eyes seemed to be immersed in the water.
“It’s raining today and it’s too slippery. When the weather gets better tomorrow, I will try to go down and see,” Fang Daichuan patted Li Sinian on the shoulder and promised, “Don’t worry.”
Li Sinian turned his head and looked at him blankly for a long moment. The hair on his forehead was dampened by the rain. When it was dry, the hair looked very ordinary, but soaked with water it became a little curly and delicate. Somehow it made him look a little silly.
“Let’s go back! I can’t see much! It’s raining!” Ding Zihui stood up and waved at them in the distance.
He shook his wet hair, and a smile hung on the corner of his mouth. “I want to check whether the trees here are good enough for making a raft. You can find a place to shelter from the rain! We will come back later!”
Ding Zihui stood obediently under a big rock to hide from the rain.
Li Sinian pulled over Fang Daichuan and went deeper to the woods. The curtain of rain became denser and denser, blocking people’s sight. Li Sinian walked to the back of a dead tree, started kicking, and made a small hole in it: “Hurry up, hide your potions in it.”
“Huh?” Fang Daichuan gave him a silly look. Although he didn’t understand, he still obediently took the potions out of his waist pocket. “Hide, hide it here? Why?”
Li Sinian sighed, took out a T-shirt from his pocket, wrapped both of the vials in it, stuffed it into the dry tree hole, picked up a few stones and threw them at the hole at random, blocking the hole in the tree.
Fang Daichuan also followed his example, trying to cover the hole. Li Sinian washed his hand using the rain water and sighed, “Didn’t you suggest we search everyone’s room tonight? How are you going to explain your two bottles of potions?”
“Of course it will be destroyed together!” Fang Daichuan’s eyes widened, and then he understood what he meant. He turned around to dig out the potion from the tree hole, “No, I can’t hide this here, I have to destroy it. What are you doing? Is this a secret weapon? What about trust between the people?!”
Li Sinian forcibly pushed him to the tree and restrained him with all his strength. “Are you that stupid?! Let’s make a bet, if you can find wolf poison tonight, I will take your Fang surname!”
(T/N: *Cough* So it is apparently common to say ‘If you can do this I will take your surname’ so no, this is not the romantic ‘I will marry to your family and take your surname’… Anyway sadly Sinian won’t take Chuan’er’s surname just telling before you got your hopes up)
(PR/N: I think it’s also supposed to hint towards that here though lol. In Heaven Official’s Blessing, it was also mentioned in the ‘General Hua’ scene that it seemed like Xie Lian took Hua Chen’s name even though it was totally a coincidence—he didn’t even know Hua Chen back then. Pretty sure there was another instance too, with this exact line actually, but I can’t remember which novel.)
Fang Daichuan gave up on struggling, and looked up at him foolishly. “Impossible, I don’t believe it!”
Li Sinian curled his lips in disdain and continued to persuade him, “You hide it here first. If you find the wolf poison tonight, I will accompany you to get these two bottles and they will be destroyed together in front of everyone. If however you can’t find any poison, you will listen to me obediently and refrain from acting foolishly.”
This sounds fair. Fang Daichuan stood still and thought about it for a while. “This…”
Li Sinian used his left hand to cover his chest while Fang Daichuan was thinking and rubbed it. This fool has a bad IQ, but his strength is really damn good. He felt his ribs that had been hit by Fang Daichuan’s elbow with a wry smile in his heart.
“What…what are you two doing?!” A cautious voice suddenly called out from behind them.
The two turned around to look over, only to see Ding Zihui looking at them with an expression that said she’d just caught someone in a scandal. Li Sinian lowered his head and glanced at their positions—Fang Daichuan was slammed against the tree trunk by him. He had his chest covered with one hand, the other hand stretched out to the trunk to support himself. From Ding Zihui’s angle it must look like he had Fang Daichuan wrapped in his arms.
The two bounced away quickly as if their asses were on fire.
“N-nothing…” Fang Daichuan’s expression was unnatural. He thought of the vials, thought of his sneaky behavior of hiding the vials, then thought about how the girl trusted him and showed them her card, and he bowed his head in shame.
Ding Zihui looked at Fang Daichuan’s ashamed face, and then at Li Sinian’s tentative expression as he stared at her. She suddenly got an idea.
“Ah…” Ding Zihui turned away, pretending to walk down the mountain naturally, “You know what, I don’t know anything! I’m going down first!”
Fang Daichuan stared at her running back and said in a low voice, “Did she see where we hid it? She acts suspicious. Maybe we should change places…”
Li Sinian touched his forehead. “She didn’t see anything, she misunderstood…” He looked at Fang Daichuan’s puppy eyes, and suddenly couldn’t say anything. “Forget it, leave it alone. Even if she saw the vials then I’m sure she won’t talk. Let’s leave now.”
As soon as he said this he strode out of the woods and left the dangerous scene behind.
Fang Daichuan followed him behind, feeling weird, glanced at the other man on the way, only to find that Li Sinian’s ears were slightly reddish, which was eye-catching in the dark sky.
The sky was getting dark, and the second night was about to begin.
(T/N: … Kabedon?! … Unfortunately our Chuan’er are too dense… :sigh:)
