Li Sinian stood in front of Du Wei and Chen Hui’s room, ringing the electronic doorbell one after another. He was in fact anxious, but his movements were not rushed, he pressed the bell just after the previous one had stopped, never hesitating, his rhythm just right.

Inside the house, Du Wei and Chen Hui were having fun.

Chen Hui wrapped her arms around the back of Du Wei’s head and held his head down on her chest, giving the other man a chance to raise his head and nibble on her neck. Both of them shook when they heard the harsh ringing of the electric bell.

“What… what’s going on?” Chen Hui glanced at the door, distracted.

Still kissing her neck, Du Wei scoffed vaguely, “It doesn’t matter.” Then he lowered his head and kissed her breast lightly.

Who knew that the person who pressed the doorbell was very patient and it looked like he was going to force them out. The doorbell rang for two minutes and kept going.

Chen Hui pushed him away.

The good mood is completely ruined. Du Wei wilted completely, got up from his girlfriend in frustration, tugged at his hair, got out of bed to open the door.

As he jumped up and pulled up his pants, he cursed in a rough voice: “Who the hell is this? Curse him for not being able to marry a wife for the rest of his life.”

(T/N : …Pfft. I see what you did author)

“Stop scolding, quickly open the door and see who is it so you can send them away. It’s getting brighter now.” Chen Hui put on the sheets and sat on the bed, sulking.

Du Wei opened the door, Li Sinian’s slender middle finger was still pressed on the doorbell, two pair of eyes met across a crack in the door. Du Wei’s expression was ugly Seeing that it was Li Sinian, there was a defensive look in his eyes.

“What are you doing here?” Du Wei looked at Li Sinian.

Li Sinian hadn’t spoken yet, when there were bursts of mourning and clamour at the end of the corridor. The thick smoke in the corridor choked Du Wei. He was stunned for a moment, coughed twice with his arms covering his mouth and nose and asked repeatedly, “What’s going on? What is this?”

Li Sinian’s eyes were calm, but his face was stern: “Get dressed and come out, the villa is on fire.”

“That’s Niu Xinyan’s room!” Du Wei opened the door, turned around and put on his clothes, threw the skirt on the ground to his girlfriend, he asked, “Where are the others? Where’s Yang Song? Where’s Ding Zihui? Have they all woken up?”

Li Sinian stood far away in the shadows outside the door to avoid suspicion, not looking into the room, only twisting his head to stare at the commotion at the end of the corridor, being a gentleman: “Yang Song has gone over to help, no one is in Ding Zihui’s room, I don’t know where she went.”

As a few people were talking, they suddenly heard a loud, mournful shriek from the end of the corridor.

–It was Niu Xinyan’s voice, and she shouted, “I don’t believe it.”

Li Sinian’s heart tightened, he walked quickly and saw the situation inside through the empty door frame.

The sky was getting brighter outside, Li Sinian caught a glimpse of Fang Daichuan’s figure. He was standing on the side of the bed facing the door. Blood was dripping from his shoulders, the right hand was burned and swollen with a layer of blisters.

In fact, out of everyone in the room, Fang Daichuan was in the best condition.

It goes without saying that the child’s condition is dire and Yang Song, who is standing by the side, is pale and barely standing by holding on to the wall, while Niu Xinyan is on the verge of an emotional breakdown.

At this point, Fang Daichuan silently stood by, feeling that even if he is saying or doing anything it won’t make any difference, plus the abnormal family makes him feel uncomfortable.

There were no antibiotics on the island. When Li Sinian had a fever, he almost rummaged through the villa. The child burned like this and the helicopter would arrive on the island two days later. Even if he is still alive right now, he probably won’t survive.

Niu Xinyan shook her head and pushed the child in her arms to the ground. She stared at him and repeated in a low voice, “I don’t believe it.”

The child’s head slammed on the ground, crying softly.

Niu Xinyan’s eyes were extremely calm as she spoke and every word was spoken with firmness and clarity. However, her jawline was tight and her body was tense.

“Tell Nan Nan to come out.” Niu Xinyan had choked on her smoke and howled all night, her voice had cracked long ago. At this moment she spoke in a deep, raspy voice, no longer as clear and beautiful as she had been a few days before, a tear hanging at the bottom of her left eye, slowly falling down.

Liu Xiquan tears dripped all over his shoulders, naked and exposed on the still smoking floor, he cowered in fear, but shook his head weakly: “Nan Nan is afraid of you, he doesn’t dare to come out. He has protected me for so many years, and now it is my turn to protect him.”

“Nan Nan is brother Nan. You don’t understand. He is your father. He is not dead.” Niu Xinyan’s voice was very light, and she stared down at the child on the ground. She smiled, but the muscles on her chin trembled slightly.

Liu Xiquan cried and smiled. He shook his head. “Mom, you don’t understand.”

“Since I could remember I haven’t had a father. Every day you tell me what my father has said and done. If I don’t obey you, you keep hitting me. You beat me during the day and when you wake up at night, you don’t let me sleep. That’s when Nan Nan appeared. He said, “You sleep, I will protect you.” Liu Xiquan lay on the ground, his eyes were disoriented, as if he had returned to the terrible time -where he is in terror day and night- in his childhood, “When you hit him, he hit you back. He pretended to be a ghost to scare you in the middle of the night. He had never seen a ghost, he only knew that father was dead and what he was like when he was alive, so he pretended to be a father to scare you. Who knows… From then on, you never hit us again. From then on, you are happy every day and cook for us. Nan Nan doesn’t tell me, in fact, I know that he is very scared. He is afraid that after being exposed, you will never be like this again. He is becoming more and more withdrawn. Acting weird, to cover up his fear, he was trying to protect me.”

Liu Xiquan was lying on his back, his eyes wide open. It seemed that only a pair of empty eyes were left on his unrecognised little face.

Li Sinian sighed in his heart.

There is no revival at all, there is only a child who has been under constant emotional stress and split a stronger, more evil personality to protect himself. That personality masquerades as the dead father, perhaps as a child’s admiration for a father he has never met; After all, the father title, in human psychology, represents protection and power.

Niu Xinyan’s body shook violently and collapsed heavily beside the foot of the bed.

The sky was getting brighter and brighter outside. Although it was still overcast, there was still a thin white halo passing through the layers of dark clouds, shining on the shore and sandy beaches.

“Mom, hug me, okay…” Liu Xiquan’s eyes were red and swollen, struggling to look up at his mother, “We are both obedient and well-behaved, you told us what to do, we listened to you, now hug us.”

There were still wisps of smoke in the house. The sea breeze blew into the house through the scorched window panes and there was a rotten smell of sulphur. The collapsed door was facing the window, and the decaying smell penetrated the whole room, filling the corridors and villas.

Li Sinian stood by the door and saw Niu Xinyan stretch out her hand and embrace her son again, the curtains that almost burned down were lifted in the wind. The ashes from the bed curtains blew toward the door.

The whole picture is engraved in Li Sinian’s mind, like an oil painting of a martyred baby being comforted by his mother, there is a cruel beauty on it.

(T/N : I will be honest with you, after translating this part I read a Yaoi comedy to wind down, maybe it is just me but I can breeze through body fluid stuff [murder etc] but child abuse makes me feels uncomfortable so that is why I am cautious here. But if you are fine then it is good, don’t want you to feel bad reading my translation. Anyway, after this there is some small sporadic dog food. Ah, I really can’t wait to get to the lovey-dovey part)
