Theo hid in a bush. The six-year-old elf played hide and seek with his parents. Of course, they knew nothing about it. That was the point of the game. His mother wanted him to help her hang up the laundry. Theo didn't feel like it.
He found doing the laundry boring. Theo preferred to go on adventures in the large garden of the small estate of the family, where he lived with his parents.
Theo had been born in this house, but it did not belong to his parents. No. They were servants and he was in the process of successfully shirking work.
Not that he had to work much. Most of the time he played as it was right for children. But sometimes his mother (or father) had the terrible idea that he could help them with the housework. Awful!
Every time they wanted him to help, he would run for his life.
The daughter of his owners came into the garden. Marie. The girl was a year older than him and had been going to school for a few weeks. From what she had told him, it wasn't a place he wanted to go. You couldn't play there all the time.
But Marie was very proud to be a big girl who went to school and made new friends there. Theo didn't know why she needed new friends. She could play with him.
Marie held a rag doll in her arms that Theo's mother had sewn for her. She also owned expensive, good dolls, but this was her favorite. She sat down on the lawn and played carefree with the doll. She hummed quietly to herself. Theo watched her.
Marie was wearing a white dress that was a bit dirty. Her hair stood out wildly from her head and some chocolate stuck in the corners of her mouth. Marie was always dirty and disheveled when she came home after school. She was a stormy child. Theo liked her. The two often romped through the garden and built huts out of chairs and sheets.
"Marie? Dear? Have you seen Theo?" His mother approached the girl. Theo carefully crawled deeper into the bushes. His mother shouldn’t find him. He didn't want to hang up stupid laundry.
"No." She shook her head. "I haven't seen him yet."
"Will you please tell him that I am looking for him? I want him to help me hang laundry... He's hiding somewhere again..." His mother looked around. "You know all his hiding places, don't you? What do you think? Where could he be?"

"I don't betray friends!" Marie wrinkled her nose. "That would be mean!"
"Oh, yes?" His mother smiled. "What a pity. Then I have to hang up the laundry alone."
"I can help you!" Marie grinned excitedly. "May I?"
"I don't know..." His mother sighed. "Your parents might mind."
"Why should they? I want to help you!" Marie jumped up and grinned broadly. "Please!"
"All right. Thank you, Marie. Maybe that will lure Theo out of his hiding place."
Marie giggled softly.
Theo wrinkled his nose. Why should he come out of his hiding place? He didn't want to hang laundry. That was boring. But he wanted to play with Marie... But Marie was now helping his mother. That was a problem. But none that could not be solved.
He would just wait until the laundry was hung.
