Back on earth, there was a famous saying ‘Don't judge a book by its cover’. Joon never believed this saying. Sure, sometimes products with an attractive cover might not be as good as advertised but in a generation where good looks and cars get you more views and followers on social media, most people don't care if their newly bought Bugatti works only three times a week, as long as its a trend. He was part of this group as well. He bought a mansion with the money he barely earned, after years of streaming mobile games with only three hours of sleep a day. because it was the latest trend to show off your gaming room. so, he bought the house, rented some furniture, and made a house tour video. In his defense, it increased his number of viewers by a lot. There is no harm in a little white lie.

Or so he had thought…

Now though, I can't help but wonder if the God of this world was thinking of that saying as he placed the soul of the devil in the body of an angel, he thought within the privacy of his mind.

The sight of the blood-drenched emperor, or should I call him father. “No way”.  He said shuddering at the thought of calling such a person father. Even though he did not get along with his father in his previous life, at least he knew he wasn't a psychopath that kills people on a whim. If he was offered a billion dollars, he wouldn't still acknowledge this person as his father.

—------------

As a well-known tyrant emperor, Maximus von Merula is a man that is never shaken by anything. He was not shaken when he rushed into the enemy imperial palace alone and fought thousand of knights, to get the king’s head. So, killing a little countryside baroness was like killing an ant, but the unshakeable tyrant was shocked by the reaction of this nine-month-old baby in front of him.

It was a normal tradition to sacrifice the woman who brings a member of the imperial family to the sacred altar. This was a tradition passed down for generations, that is why it was common for a maid to bring the child, but this time because of the baroness's ploy to get close to Maximus she became the sacrifice instead. This wasn’t surprising to Maximus, because beautiful women did all sorts of things to get into his bed. Like dressing up as a maid and slipping a love potion in his drink or food, not knowing that he was immune to all poison. Sometimes he would give in to some, just to satisfy his lust. After some time, they came to him saying they are carrying his child, it was annoying at first, but this was also an opportunity to silence the nobles that keep nagging at him during court meetings about producing an heir.

Since a solution to his problem came, he commissioned the magic tower to build a palace for these women. The Valkyrie palace. Every woman he slept with was kept in that palace, then he forgets about them. Another problem surfaced; the women who were pregnant gave birth to girls. He didn’t care if the child was a boy or a girl because he had no interest in being a father to them. In a world where men hold power to control mana and women don’t, the nobles were not satisfied with not having a male heir.

Even if he wasn’t interested, It was his duty as the emperor. As a child, Maximus did not receive any love or affection from his parents, so he thought it was normal if he did the same. But the reason he killed his parent was that he hated everything about them, so he decided to take up the responsibility of naming his children.

The first child was brought to the altar by a red-haired maid.  He saw fear in her eyes, but pity was not a nature of his. He took the child from her hands and strangled her to death. The child started to cry, wondering why a child who has not learned how to think cried when someone died. Was it a coincidence? He named her Aeliana Von Merula. The knight who had come to escort princess Aeliana out of the altar was shell-shocked as he could not see the emperor’s usual maddened gaze. “What are you waiting for?”

The emperor’s voice snapped him out of his shock.

“Huh!” he coughed. “Yes, your majesty. I will escort her highness out”

His mind was racing. Certainly, his eyes were playing tricks on him. There was no way the tyrant would have a smile on his face. That has never happened before. It’s known that the emperor was like a beautifully sculpted statue that never smiled or laughed. Did I get affected by illusion magic? He thought warily. It’s known, that wizards of magic-tower who specialize in magic and knights who are trained in the way of the sword always clash due to their differences in opinion, But there was no way, one of those book nerds would play a prank in a place like this. Though they had diverse opinions on most things, the fear of the emperor was the one thing they had in common. If it wasn’t them then what happened….

“Hey Gard…Gard what are you doing standing there”. A rough and informal voice jolted him out of his thoughts. “Ah!” he looked towards the sound of the voice and saw a figure in a fully plated silver armor with three golden stripes that loomed over him like a mountain. he sighed internally. “So, it was you captain.” The only person allowed to wear armor into the palace was none other than the captain of the imperial knights Izaak blackwood.

“Why haven’t you taken the princess back to the Valkyrie palace?” he asked in an assertive tone. Realizing what he had done, Gard lowered his head in apology to the princess in his arms “my apologies princess Aeliana. I let my thought distract me”.

Quiet Snickering could be heard from the group of wizards present at the great hall. “They can’t even do their jobs well.” one of the wizards said mockingly.

“That’s why you should leave the thinking to us.” another piped up.

It was unbefitting of a knight to be distracted by his thoughts when escorting a member of the imperial family even if it was a child. This was part of the knight code that all knights knew by heart. So how did one of the best-performing knights get distracted? Izaak is curious to know what manner of thought could put such a knight in a daze.

“What was it that bemused you?” he asked stopping Gard who was about to leave. He could not say such absurd words like he saw the emperor smiling so he gave an evasive answer. “Nothing captain I was just being lazy”. Even with that answer, he could feel the captain’s unconvinced gaze. Lying a second time would make things difficult so he tried explaining. “Am not sure if you would believe me if I told you.”

Izaak curious about what he had to say replied. “I would be the judge of that.” the answer he got was more shocking than what he expected. Maybe he didn’t hear what Gard said Well so he took off his helmet and asked him.  “Repeat what you said.”

“OK. I-I think I saw his majesty the emperor smiling.”
