Chapter 1.2

Melinda woke up in the morning when the sun had long since risen. She had a severe headache. Last night's booze was taking its toll. She got up after a few more minutes and went to the bathroom. There she looked at herself in the mirror. From there, looked tired, a sleepless girl with short blond hair, which stuck out in different directions.

She yawned and stretched, kneading her stiffened body. She did a short workout and then took a cold shower. After freshening up and changing into clean, comfortable clothes, Melinda reached into the refrigerator. Her stomach demanded food. Half-empty shelves greeted her cheerfully. Yesterday she had forgotten to go to the store and buy food for a couple of days.

With a sigh, she took out an old meat salad and put it to heat in the microwave. Along the way, she turned on the computer, and while it was booting up, she checked her cell phone. There were no missed calls, but there were more than a dozen unread messages.

- We're waiting for you.

- Where are you?

- We'll start without you.

- The boss already showed up.

- I got a legendary relic.

- It was a joke

- Why don't you answer?

Melinda put down her cell phone. The messages on the phone were from her playmates. The microwave beeped, signaling that the food was warmed up.

She sat down at the computer and greedily devoured the food, browsing the email and forum of the online game "Eternity." She had to spend quite a bit of time going through the messages and writing responses to the emails and forum posts. Melinda had been playing "Eternity" for almost a year. It's a classic MMORPG without modern virtual reality technology. In it, she played as a light elven female healer.

When she finished eating and put away the remains of her meal, Melinda launched the game. She was immediately bombarded with private messages.

- Hi.

- Hey, help me with my quest.

- Will you go to the tower?

- We're looking for a healer to join the party. You wanna come?

Closing her private messages, Melinda wrote in clan chat.

- Hello, everyone. I'll be busy with daily quests for now.

- Hi.

- Hey. (chuckles)

- Hi.

- Let me know when you're free.

Melinda spent the whole morning playing. She completed the available dailies and a couple of party quests. And now her body needed to rest. Her arms and neck were aching from the strain on her muscles.

To work out, she decided to go to the nearest supermarket and buy food for a couple of days. The day promised to be hot. So Melinda dressed lightly. She put on shorts like old shabby jeans, a light T-shirt with a picture of a character from an Asian TV series, and light sandals. On her head wore a cap with the image of the same character from the series. These things were bought a long time ago on sale and at a low price.

As soon as she stepped outside, she felt the full force of the summer sun. Every day she went out when there was still no heat outside, and came back when the sun was setting. After a day in the stuffy, hot factory, the evening sun didn't seem so hot.

Melinda quickened her walk. It wasn't far from the air-conditioned supermarket. So she could hide from the heat that was raging outside.

The supermarket was crowded, which was common at this hour. Melinda took the cart and began to leisurely choose her food. While she shopped, she enjoyed the pleasant temperature. Of the food, she chose convenience foods to cook in the microwave, fruits, and bread. She added a couple of juice boxes and beer.

Melinda stood in a long line at the cash register. After paying at the cash register, she put all the food she bought into several large bags. She didn't hurry to leave the supermarket but decided to eat ice cream at the café, which also was inside the building.

Melinda ordered a large portion and slowly ate it, enjoying the taste and the coolness. There were a couple of screens playing music videos and commercials in the café.

One commercial seemed familiar to her. It was the one from yesterday that was showing at the bar, featuring a new MMOGs online game. This time she could watch it in silence. There was a quiet atmosphere compared to the bar, and she greedily memorized everything said in the commercial.

Melinda had tried virtual reality games a couple of times. The technology progressed over time and was no longer young, but still had limitations. The main limitation was the time spent in the game, which was set by the developers in the range of eight to 12 hours a day. Another limitation was the need for special equipment and space for it. For a virtual reality game, the most common capsule was as big as a single bed. The last requirement has been continuity of electricity and internet access. Although the technology guaranteed safe use of the capsule, connection interruptions were an unpleasant event and could disorient the player for a short time.

Three months ago, when news of the new game's imminent release first surfaced, Melinda filled out a detailed application on the game's website. It contained more than a hundred questions, ranging from physical body size to your preferences for MMORPGs and life history. After the application deadline, the developers promised to select the best ones to participate in the game's beta testing. They will send a letter of invitation to all the lucky ones.

"Letter!" Melinda suddenly remembered.

She got the letter yesterday but didn't open it or look at it. Quickly finishing her ice cream, she almost ran home.

Melinda paused to catch her breath as she ran into the studio. She was soaking wet with sweat that even her T-shirt stuck to her skin, she was in such a hurry to get home. After catching her breath and wiping the sweat from her forehead, she looked around the room carefully. The letter was nowhere to be seen.

"I remember it was there," Melinda said puzzled.

She spent a quarter of an hour carefully searching the room and the bathroom until she found the letter in the garbage can in the bathroom. The letter read, "To Ms. Melinda Bathurst, from the New Age Technology Corporation.

"Yes!" Melinda shouted excitedly.

Quickly she opened the envelope and read the next letter:

To Ms. Melinda Butthurt from New Age Technology Corporation.

New Age Technology Corporation.

"Oh… " puzzled Melinda. "That's on the other side of the country!" Then she looked at the current date of July 27. "I have to leave tomorrow night!"

The initial panic was quickly replaced by a measured hurry. Turning on the computer, Melinda looked up routes to the city of *** and ticket availability. The most convenient route was to fly by plane, departing at 9 p.m. on July 28 from the neighboring town of *** and arriving at 4 a.m. The other option was to take a train with a transfer, but then she didn't have much time left. The first train left today at 6 p.m. with a transfer in the city of ***. The second would arrive in the right city on July 29 at 11:45 a.m. She didn't want to spend two days on the road.

Melinda chose to fly on a plane, which would cost $240. After booking her ticket, she decided to relax and started the game "Eternity" on her computer. Immediately invitations poured into a private chat. Ignoring all the invitations, she wrote to the clan chat room.

- I'll be gone for a couple of days.

- Sadness.

- Get well soon.

- Boyfriend problems again?

- Forgot to pay your Internet bill?

- Ha-ha, you guys are funny. I'm going to ***.

- Are you kidding me?

- Don't forget to take selfies and show us

Early on the morning of the 29th, Melinda stood at the airport exit. She hadn't been to such a big city before, so she felt a little uncomfortable. The sun had not yet risen, and the tops of the skyscrapers were not lit. But down below, the streets were brightly lit with street lamps and various advertising signs. There were even a lot of people around, all of them in a hurry.

Melinda did not get a good night's sleep on the plane because of the excitement, so her only wish was to find a hotel and get a good night's sleep. On the plane, she found a hotel near the airport with rooms available on the Internet.

She took her phone out of her handbag, took a couple of pictures, and sent them to her social networking page. Then, after looking around the area, she chose a free cab waiting for passengers and went to it.

"Are you free? "Melinda asked the driver standing beside the car.

"For such a beauty I'm always free," he replied when he saw her.

As they drove, the cab driver occasionally glanced in the mirror at Melinda, who was sitting in the back seat. This was somewhat surprising. Was she so lightly dressed that she was attracting attention? She was wearing a thin white sleeveless floral sundress with a chest neckline and a length just below her knees. She wore light sandals on her feet. A light, wide-brimmed hat completed the look. If Melinda had read his mind, she would be surprised. The driver occasionally glanced not at the neckline, but at the thick biceps on her arms. He had never seen a young girl have such powerful muscles in her arms.

It didn't take more than ten minutes to get to the hotel.

"We're here."

"How much do I owe you?"

"Seventy-five dollars," the cab driver replied.

Sighing at the high price, Melinda quickly paid him off.

The Sunrise Hotel she arrived at was in a tall, fifteen-story building. After taking a few more selfies, she headed inside. The lobby on the first floor was empty. Only two concierges, a guy, and a girl were bored behind the counter. When they saw Melinda enter the building, they livened up.

"Welcome to the Sunrise Hotel," the guy greeted with a memorized phrase. "What can I do for you?"

"I'd like to get a room," Melinda replied.

"For how long?"

"Until the morning of the 31st."

"For a single room, $320. Meals are not included."

"All right," Melinda agreed. She had no choice anyway. The other hotels were even more expensive, or no rooms available.

"Your room is 717," the guy said, handing her the room key. "I'll call the hotel maid. She'll take you to your room."

The single room was the same size as the studio Melinda had rented. Only cleaner and tidier, with a full cover-up bed. Melinda looked into the restroom. It was similar, too. A washbasin with a large mirror, a toilet, and a shower stall.

Back in the room, Melinda quickly removed her dress and sandals. Leaving her in just underwear, she threw back the covers on the bed. Surprisingly, the bed was soft and comfortable. In a couple of minutes, Melinda was sleeping sweetly.
