CHAPTER 4: “PYMULE”

Ai didn’t know exactly what to think when he entered Pymule. The first thing he saw of the village was its tall watch towers made from polished wood, stone, and metal. There were probably one in each corner of the village, protecting it from outside threats. He couldn’t see if there were guards in them but he assumed there was one in each tower, silently watching over the village as the days went by.

As he ventured deeper, the trees were getting bigger and taller, their leaves ever so colorful. By the time when Ai reached the village, the trees were already taller than most of the buildings.

The word ‘village’ definitely did not suit it. At least, it didn’t match the image of a village inside Ai’s head. When he thought of ‘village’, he thought of simple buildings that weren’t too polished, he imagined a limited number of people going to do their daily chores or jobs. What he didn’t imagine was modern buildings with some being over two stories tall, busy streets bustling with many people, the path was even lined with stone. It was more like a city than a village.

As Ai looked at the people going around, he realized that not everyone was an NPC. He saw some players mixed in the crowd as well. They were quite far off in the distance so he couldn’t really see if they were also elves doing their starter quest or were they just higher leveled players who needed to do a quest or was just sightseeing.

Ai couldn’t blame them if they were coming to sightsee. The village of Pymule was beautiful. The buildings architecture were beautiful, very elegant and royal like the elves were. Above the city were giant trees that casted big shadows, sunlight streamed through the gaps between the colorful leaves. It was definitely a sight of fantasy.

Welcome to the Elf Beginner Village, Pymule!

This was the size and extent of the starting village? It looked so grand and elegant that Ai could hardly believe it. He expected something of this scale to be something in late game areas. He couldn’t imagine what that would look like now.

“Envoy, don’t stray too far.”

Ai snapped from his amazement and walked briskly to catch up with Athiel.

Both elves soon walked with each other. While Ai was still taking everything in with amazement, Athiel said nothing and continued to guide Ai along the way.

Now mixed within the crowd, Ai could see the elves a bit more clearly. There were a mix of dark and light elves in the crowd, telling Ai that [World Symphony] didn’t separate the two as other games liked to do to create plot points or tension. Instead they were all part of one society. Though each elf was unique, everyone he saw were the same as Athiel, he couldn’t tell their gender. They were all so beautiful and elegant in their gestures and movement.

Catching Ai’s wandering eyes, Athiel seemed to register what he was thinking and answered.

“I understand that a sheltered envoy such as yourself has not been taught of elf tradition and etiquette.” Athiel said matter of factly. “We do not trifle with matters such as genders. Elven society has passed the need for it. We simply love beautiful things whether it’s a beautiful dress or shiny jewels.”

Ai simply nodded and continued following Athiel. He looked around at the society that simply loved beauty, they didn’t care how they achieved it or what form it took as long as it was beautiful. There was almost something poetic about it, about the elven society in its entirety.

The game had decided that this was the type of society that Ai suited. He wasn’t sure what the game was trying to say, but he was part of it. This society that adored beautiful things was his kin now, at least in [World Symphony].

After walking for quite some time, passing all sorts of buildings and interesting people, the two elves stopped in front of a two story building that was not too close to the bustling city. In fact, it kind of felt peaceful there. There was a gentle breeze that blew all around them

“This is the inn.” Athiel said. “Let me take you up to your room.”

The inside of the inn was just as elegant and grand as the outside did. There was a chandelier hanging down the ceiling, Ai could see a sunroom on the right with two elves sitting down while sipping tea and on the left Ai could see a lounge with no one inside. It looked more like the inside of a manor rather than an inn.

Behind the counter, an elf wearing a brown dress was staring at them. Ai supposed they were the inn owner or receptionist.

“This is the lord’s envoy.” Athiel said. “They will be staying here for the night.”

The receptionist only bowed in response. They left the counter to approach Ai and gestured for his hand. When Ai reached out, the receptionist gave him a key. They didn’t say a single word and Ai wondered if the game had any lines programmed into her.

“This way, envoy.” Athiel said by the stairway, gesturing upstairs.

When Ai looked back at the receptionist, they had walked back to her spot behind the counter, standing still as they looked towards the entryway.

Received [Golden Room Key] from Inn Maid Avra!

So they weren’t the receptionist or innkeeper but only a simple maid, though they were no different from other elves, all beautiful and elegant. There was something about this particular NPC, but Ai couldn’t tell exactly what was wrong. Maybe it was their blank expression or their lack of dialogue. It was almost odd for a game that was as resourceful and rich as [World Symphony] to make an NPC that didn’t talk or express much.

Ai looked away from the maid and followed Athiel as they guided him into his room for the day. While they walked, Ai examined the [Room Key] object in his [Thought System].

[Golden Room Key - Grants player temporary use of the Golden Suite at the Pymule Outer Inn. Expires after 3 days]

Expiring in 3 days...did that mean the main quest right now would take that amount of time or less? Why so long? And the Golden Suite? Ai wondered if the whole room would be painted gold.

As Ai was getting suspicious of the quest in hand and what it entailed, they had arrived at the Golden Suite on the second floor. The door wasn’t made out of gold like Ai hoped it would be, but it did stand out amongst the other doors.

The door was located right at the end of the hallway, facing it. There was much more craftsmanship put in the design as well with detailed etchings of curling vines and flowers that the other doors didn’t have.

“This shall be your room, envoy.” Athiel said, “Please rest, we will call for you when it’s time.”

Ai simply nodded in response. Seeing it, Athiel deeply bowed then turned around to go back to whatever they were doing before they ran into Ai. To some degree, Ai felt bad for Athiel. He couldn’t imagine anyone in the real world dropping whatever important things they were doing just to deliver a random stranger to a hotel that was quite far away from where they met. Ai made a mental note to get something for Athiel when he was done with this quest, just to make himself feel less guilty.

Turning toward the door, Ai took out the key from his inventory and unlocked the beautifully etched door.

When he got a good look at the room, he was happy to find that the room did have some gold in it, though it wasn’t as much as he thought. The Suite was as big as a luxury studio apartment in the real world. The walls were layered with plain wallpapers that had faded gold etchings on them, it glittered as Ai walked inside the room.

On the left side there was a comfy looking bed with fluffy looking pillows and warm blankets, the middle had a living area with two loveseats, a coffee table and a flower vase on top of it then on the right was a door that Ai assumed led to the bathroom.

There was no kitchen area, but Ai could see a bowl of fruits next to the bed. Picking one of the fruits up, Ai found that consuming one fruit would give a player around 25% more HP.

About player stats, [World Symphony] had a standard stat system for the players. They went for a very basic HP and MP system with no extra points like Energy, Stamina, or Hunger. Those three depended entirely on the player’s real physical body. If players were overweight in real life, then their Stamina in game would be lesser than those players who exercise daily in real life.

In the [Thought System] Ai could see his stats.

[Player Ai, Elf / HP: 500 / MP: 1000 / Class: Mediator]

Below that was the list of his special skills which for now was limited to two:

[Homestead] which could teleport him last Safe Zone he was at and [Basic Heal] which was a standard skill that all the scholar type classes had. So far, no Mediator special skill yet.

Ai pushed the thoughts down and started putting the fruits into his inventory. He might as well take these fruits since the healing skill didn’t heal for very much and had a considerable amount of cooldown.

After some time of lounging around in the Golden Suite, Ai finally heard a quiet knock at the door. Reluctantly getting up from the comfortable bed, Ai read into the [Thought System] to see if it would notify him of who was at the door. His eyes widened as he read.

[Player Eusyca_] has requested entry to your room!
