“Lady Kristine, I’m coming in~”
“Just fucking come in then! I told you to stop knocking all the time.”
The wide wooden door screeched open and in stepped a young girl. Her pauldron-covered shoulders held the door open as she shuffled inside the room with a pile of papers in her hands.
Despite the heavy metal sabatons smacking against the ground, the beautiful red carpet muffled any hint of its annoying sound. It couldn’t stop the clanging of her armor, though, as the girl struggled to walk over to the third of three tables and placed in the room. She cut off the pile of paper in three halves and placed one on the second table, where a young man with silvery hair and similar armor sat.
The other pile went to the table at the head of the room, landing on a lock of the lustrous black hair of the owner. The young girl stuck her tongue out as the woman at the head of the table pulled her neck back and glared at her. The ruby-red eyes and the beautifully sharp features of the woman made even her angered face look charming.
No.
She was charming. Terrifyingly so.
“Reley, did you have to pile more paperwork on my desk?” the woman, Lady Kristine et Kaiser, spoke to the girl.
Reley, on the other hand, just smacked the top of her head and went ‘teehee’ instead of answering. “It’s your job anyway, lady Kristine.”
“Enough,” Kristine said, shaking her head. She clicked her tongue and shifted her gaze back down to the table, moving her quill wildly with clearing the things her only focus. “Go and keep the pile on my left on the shelves and blow off the damn candles.”
“Okay~” Reley giggled and turned around with the pile of papers in her hand. She walked over to the oak shelves in front of the ivory wallpapers all over the room, squeezing the documents inside the already filled cabinets. Next, she turned to the candle stands and blowed their fading flames off, she would have to change them again come dawn. Lastly, Reley walked over to the windows and pushed them open.
“The breeze should be good—“
A breeze of air swooshed into the study and the papers spread all over the place went fluttering about.
“RELEY—Un!” Kristine tried to scream, but a fluttering sheet of paper landed on her face and blocked her mouth.
Reley noticed and pulled the windows close. As if it were an orchestration of the wind, the wild breeze drizzled away and the papers all came tumbling back down.
“Oh dear,” Johan, the silver-haired young man, clasped his head and sighed at the sight. “This is going to take a while…”
A crumpling sound rang out. Kristine pulled the paper away from her and held it in front of her eyes.
With each movement of her pupils, her expression changed. Johan and Reley felt their nerves soar through the roof as Kristine went from coolly inspecting to hardening her face in a fiery rage.
“Reley.“
“Y-yes…?“
“What is this?“ she asked. “What's this about the daughter of house Habsburg?“
“Uh… the lady… is going to visit…” Reley nervously looked at Johan, the man was hiding his face and averting her gaze. Betrayal. A betrayal in daylight. She swore internally to drag this bastard across Cocytus and wash him thoroughly in the burning depths of Phlegethon before bringing him back to life to do it all over again. She swore.
“Reley.“
“Eek! The lady is going to Count Athenus’ estate, or so guards had learned when she passed through the Kaiser territory!”
Kristine’s frown deepened. “Why?”
“To… meet the young count, Lord… Isaac von Epsiteme Athenus.”
Though there wasn’t one in truth, the two vassals of Kristine could hear a snapping sound spread the room at the end of Reley’s sentence. Kristine crumpled the paper in her hand completely and dropped it on the ground. With a face scarier than that of an ogre that had just had its nuts crushed, Kristine et Kaiser took a step ahead, then another.

Right on time, Johan came in front of her path and got down to his knees.
“You can’t! My lady! Please stop!”
“Move away, Johan. I’ll trample you like I plan to trample that backstabbing daughter of a whore.”
“My lady! Please, think of our families! She is your friend, it must be something else! S-she might just want to enroll in the magic tower! Yes!”
“If that is the case, she can just tell me through signs after I rip off her tongue. I’d gladly listen.”
“T-think of our families! The Kaiser and Athenus houses have always had a sour relationship! It won’t go over smoothly if you cross the border. Handle it with tact, my lady!”
“The past is not heavy enough to burden me, Johan. You know well enough.”
Kristine took another step ahead and passed the kneeling Johan.
“My lady!” Johan felt a hundred needles stab his heart with every word as his mind scrambled all over trying to find a convincing enough reason that could stop her. Anything, anything would do. His mind reached around at hundreds of straws before finally clasping on one.
One that was too fickle to even be called a straw.
“My lady!” Johan shouted. “What if… what if the stone cold young count doesn’t like women who act rashly?”
The sound of receding footsteps stopped.
“W-wawawa-what! What are you on about? How immoral!!” As if her face had been replaced by a red tomato, Kristine blushed wildly and turned to Johan. The man took a sigh of relief but was kicked on his sides. “Who cares who he likes! Damn bastard, why do you say weird stuff?”
Kristine kicked her silver-haired aide mercilessly before flicking her hair to the side and walking back to her table. “Fool! Get back to work! Don’t say such weird stuff again.”
Johan and Reley sighed in grand relief as they crawled their way back to their tables and got down on the papers again. The curse of the paperwork was much better than their lord going out and kicking down an innocent and feeble young girl pursuing whatever ends she may be.
It was a great relief.
In a weak tone that neither Johan nor Reley could hear, Lady Kristine et Kaiser mumbled to herself.
“Handle it with tact… huh?”

[Breaking! Rhwayne Bridge of Count Athenus’ estate collapsed!]
[… Young Lady of Viscount Habsburg, Annie Der Habsburg lost in the collapse…
[… Genius Wizard, Isaac von Episteme Athenus out to search for his cousin…}
“W-what horrific timing…” Johan muttered.
“To think she was just his cousin,” and Reley lamented.
The two of them stood outside the fireplace in the reception room of the Kaiser Estate, waiting to take away their Knight Captain for the day. They shared a gaze and smiled. With no words, the two of them threw the newspaper into the fireplace.
“We must absolutely not let her see that the young count is the one searching for her.”
“Absolutely not.”
