Xiulan found herself in an odd position for a month. Both Zheng Ling and Fu Jinjing’s business were making more money than she was. Until the first month’s payment came in from the Zhao’s it was the two of them that were paying the rent for the rented house.

The two did not mind but Xiulan felt uncomfortable being effectively broke. She had been trading in the market by the river and had made some gold from the difference between prices between buyers and sellers. The system was the perfect tool for making money in this way but there was only so much money to be had from that kind of trade and she now had several employees to pay.

Xiulan needed a new way to make money. Several thousand gold coins were paid to her from the Zhao clan at the end of the month and using that money Xiulan thought she had devised a way to make her next bucket of gold.

She had been relatively idle during the daytime and had been scrolling through the faulty cultivation methods offered by the store. One in particular caught her eye. It only cost two hundred gold due to its severe faults:

The Stunted Bud Cultivation method: A unique cultivation method that can be practiced by those without spiritual roots. All cultivation is done with wood-based qi, also comes with a technique that promotes the growth of plants. Cultivation is capped at the third level of qi condensation.

To a non-cultivator any kind of cultivation that could be done without spiritual roots was amazing. Xiulan just had to find a way to make sure that once she unleashed this cultivation method on to the world she would profit from every new person that learnt it.

Xiulan decided that the best way to accomplish this was to start a cultivation school here in Temple Gorge. She would make every student swear a Dao oath not to impart the cultivation method without the school’s consent.

Dao oaths would bring down the wrath of the heavens on any person who broke them, and the oath would ensure that Xiulan maintained control of the method. Sects and Clans made use of similar oaths all time.

Xiulan purchased the cultivation method. The system snapped up the gold coins and a now familiar looking cultivation method popped into her hand. This method looked noticeable less profound than the methods Xiulan had purchased before. The system had not even classified the method with a grade due to its severe restrictions.

Zheng Ling was taking a well-deserved break in the garden of the house. She had been pumping out Qi gathering pills almost non-stop.

“You look exhausted little Ling,” said Xiulan plopping down next to Zheng Ling and massaging the doctor’s tired shoulders.

Zheng Ling relaxed into Xiulan resting her head against the smaller woman’s torso. “I need to find some apprentices to teach. I have made thousands of those pills by now and the market keeps snapping them up. Even selling them so cheaply, I have made a fortune that I don’t know what to do with.”

Xiulan stiffened at the mention of money, but she did not want to presume too much. The gold had been earned by Zheng Ling. Sure she had already given the doctor a heaven grade technique, but she did not want to keep such strict accounting with her partners.

Zheng Ling felt Xiulan’s apprehension and turned to face her. Zheng Ling kissed Xiulan gently. “We are partners,” she said, “what’s mine is also yours.”

Xiulan relaxed and said, “okay little Ling.”

Fu Jinjing had been hiding behind a pillar hoping to see some erotic action between the two. She enjoyed watching the most but hearing this intimate conversation instead she stepped out and cried, “my money is yours too XIulan. I have not made as much as sister Zheng but I have also made quite a bit of money.”

Fu Jinjing embraced the two of them. While this touching moment was playing out the system added its two cents, “the host has too many scruples for a good merchant. Gold is Gold! Take what you are offered and more. It is embarrassing for the system to have such a broke host!”

Xiulan sighed, “thank you. I promise that the money will be well spent.”

As soon as Xiulan accepted the system dinged and a new feature was displayed before Xiulan’s eyes. A screen with all of her current assets, liquid capital and expenses was listed in neat rows before her.

Xiulan had access to twenty thousand gold. Considering that she had her group had only been in temple Gorge for little over a month it was not bad but far from the wealthy families in the upper sections of the Gorge. The income they were making was great on a per months basis, but they were being chocked by the small scale of their businesses.

Xiulan decided that the best way to invest that money was in infrastructure that would allow them to scale. Not to mention that the school for cultivating non-cultivators that she planned to open would need a place to operate.

Her next moves would take planning and time to come to fruition. Time she might not have as she had several enemies that needed to be dealt with or more realistically observed for now.

After messing around in the garden with Zheng Ling and Fu Jinjing for a while Xiulan left to find Long Yanlin. It was approaching night and Yanlin was cultivating in the dying evening light.

Xiulan waited for the boy to finish his cultivation before she approached him and said, “Yanlin I have an opportunity for you.”

The boy sprang to his feet and bowed, “I am at your disposal miss.”

XIulan sighed, “before I discuss what I want from you we should discuss something else. It was recently pointed out to me that I am not a greedy enough person. That is probably true. Before we move forward, I will need a Dao Oath for your loyalty. As long as my treatment of you is not unfair, I want to be certain that I can trust you.”

Xiulan was expecting that Yanlin would take some time to think it over but almost immediately he said, “I swear upon the Dao and my cultivation that I will forever be loyal to Long Xiulan.”

The air snapped a little with Qi as the oath took effect. Xiulan looked at the boy in shock before she decided that she did not need to know why he was so loyal only that he was.

“I want you to start a sect and teach others the cultivation method I have given to you,” began Xiulan, “I have enemies and untrustworthy allies. Fighting head on would be tiring and impractical for me. I took the Kang Clan on very publicly, but such upfront confrontation is bad for business and chiefly I want to make money.”

Yanlin nodded, “your allies are truly untrustworthy with the snooping I have done in the Zhao Clan’s books they shorted you of several hundred gold in this payment.”

Xiulan snorted, “I am not surprised Patriarch Zhao has very little control of his own family at this point. That is exactly what I want this sect to do though. Monitor the honouring of any contract that I make as well as keep an eye on my enemies. In return I will invest a massive amount resources to help the sect grow.”

Yanlin smiled, “I can recruit from the orphans of the city. There are many who like me want to avoid the army recruiter.”

Xiulan smiled back, “good idea, just make sure they swear a Dao oath. The whole point is that this sect has to be something that I trust completely. I will leave the name up to you as it will technically be your sect. I do not have the time to run it.”

Yanlin laughed and then said, “I think given that we will be working for a merchant the Golden Hand sect seems appropriate.”

Xiulan grinned back, “well then as your first official task as the sect master of the golden hand, I order you to steal the gold that the Zhao shorted us of from them. Leave a note explaining that they must have miscounted.”

Yanlin stepped back into the shadows of the night and disappeared like a wraith. Xiulan decided that this would suit her far better than open combat. The Golden Hand sounded intimidating enough. Hopefully they could keep the Bai Clan and Zhao Yaozu in check.
