Chapter 34 Part 1: Anthill
The monsters kept coming, for three consecutive days,
No matter if I was eating or sleeping, if I heard a monster was spotted, I’d immediately grab my weapon and head outside. As the whole process repeated over and over again, words were no longer necessary.
Boom.
The huge body of a Mountain Ant crashed to the ground. Min Da-Lae fiddled her shield with a sullen expression.
“Damn….”
We had fought dozens of monsters the entire night, and this would be the biggest drain on our stamina. Everyone was exhausted.
‘…Is this a test of viability and endurance, not offensive capabilities?’
These are the most basic skills of hunters, so it’s appropriate to evaluate them.
After killing the mountain ants, we all sat down in silence. Each monster kill came with a hint, but now they didn’t even seem to have the energy to rejoice about it.
‘I’m used to this, but the rest of them look like they’re having a hard time.’
Still, they’re holding up pretty well. I could say that it’s indeed difficult, but they’re following this forced trek patiently. Lee Eun-Woo and I had higher stats compared to other aspirants, so our daily mileage is only slightly behind the average Scout Hunter.
‘Just following along is already quite a feat for any aspirant.’
I was surprised that Min Da-Lae and Kim Ju-il were able to keep up with us without complaining.
‘Although I did give them some advice on how to fix a few things.’
Well, they tend to speak a lot without thinking, but I guess it can’t be helped because they are in their early 20s and have no social experience. I don’t think they’re bad kids, they’re just a little immature. I was used to being alone inside the Yeonhwado Gate, and I was trained to keep the night watch for days so I have more experience. I went ahead and cut open the belly of another mountain ant.
“Under…?”
The note clearly said 『Under』. Not east, west, north, south, left, right, but ‘Under‘? What the hell…
“Ah.”
For some reason, there seemed to be a lot more mountain ants than usual. I naturally turned my gaze to the ground. It was made of soft dirt.
Of course… Ants live in anthills.
So Mountain ants had similar habits.
‘Was the other scroll inside this Anthill?’
❖
“Uhhh… Are we doing it right?”
Grumble… The dirt kept sliding down. The entrance to the anthill was an inconvenient structure for humans to go down to. They were so big, it was more like a pit than anything else..
“Careful.”
They all nodded and swallowed hard at my words. One wrong step and they could fall down there.
“You’re sure it’s in here, right?”
“Probably. It said under, so it must be under here.”

“But… The Queen Ant was the original boss monster of this gate. It’s not even a monster we can easily deal with.”
He’s right. It’s not a monster for four novice Hunters to take on, and I don’t think the examiners are going to let us take on that Queen Ant ourselves.
‘At best, we’ll have to sneak it out of the queen ant’s chamber, or go to the heavily guarded ant egg chamber, or something like that.’
“Don’t worry. I was told the last time I was here that queen ants are born every ten years, and it’s only been six years since the last one died, so there shouldn’t be one yet.”
Lee Eun-Woo added with a smile.
Indeed. Then there was a high probability that the scroll would be in the queen ant’s room. Even if it’s uninhabited, it’s still their boss’s chamber, so they’ll probably take great care of it. We’d have to get in somehow and steal that scroll…
“Shhh!”
-Ki Ru Ru…
While we were holding our breath, five mountain ants scurried past our way. One more step and they would have even spotted us. Not knowing where the ants would appear as we passed through the many pathways was a nerve-wracking experience.
Those who are already exhausted must have felt like they’re testing the limits of their physical strength. Wandering around in an endless maze was mentally draining. It’s hard to tell if you’re on the right path or not when you’re surrounded by dirt walls and sandbags.
“Didn’t we just pass by here before?”
“I don’t think so…”
With both physical and mental exhaustion overlapping, I was rapidly exhausted.
Consideration and gentleness always come from having a relaxed state of mind. Now that I don’t have it, the words that were coming out of my mouth were getting even more sensitive.
“I can’t believe we hadn’t turned left earlier.”
“We all agreed and went right. You know.”
“You all agreed to go to the right, except for me, so we went to the right…! Hah…! Forget it.”
It’s not a good sign, but it’s a common occurrence. Even professional hunters would often fight and split up inside the gate. With a little more experience, you’d learn not to risk your life just because you’re in the mood.
“…This path seemed to have a different color.”
Lee Eun-Woo whispered in a low voice. Everyone froze on the spot. He’s right. The soil was no longer brown, it was red.
‘But since when?’
I pretended not to notice, but my concentration had already dropped significantly.
“Don’t move too quickly…”
“Is there any trap?”
“Maybe.”
Only Lee Eun-Woo and I were standing on the red soil. We waved at them, and Min Da-Lae and Kim Ju-il slowly backed away. It would be safer for them to stay on the brown soil.
“…Why don’t we move slowly?”
“I’ll go first.”
Even If I fall, I might be able to escape due to my spatial interference, but Lee Eun-Woo couldn’t…
“One… Two…”
