Not good.

My heart, thrown away and abandoned by her prince, was on the verge of straying to the worst path.

Schadenfreude is not virtuous at all.

Most definitely not.

—Please do excuse my grinning face though, if you will. I am still bitter at having dumped after all!

The parson in charge coughs, beckoning the queue line to proceed which prompted the next candidate to face the selection orb.

No response of any sort either.

By the by, I am along the furthest end of the queue, and it will still take time till my turn.

Meanwhile, I can leisurely entertain myself with Maynard’s reaction—but oh, Lina was already crying.

It looks like Maynard doesn’t have the energy to comfort her, though.

Well, that is understandable.

He was quite high-spirited in the thought of acquiring the saintess for himself, but the person he undoubtedly believed to be one, turned out to be false. I wonder what he plans to do now. Would he promptly jump over to the boat of the true saintess when found? Although, I have to say, I think it would be scandalous even for a prince to discard fiancées twice.

My eyes remained locked on Maynard while lost in thought, and when he noticed my stare, he turned his attention towards me and our eyes met.

I responded to him with a pleasant smile.

Maynard awkwardly averted his gaze, which was to be expected of him. It must feel embarrassing. He went as far as annulling his engagement by reason of wanting the saintess, only to clung to the wrong one. Fufufu, Not good, my face is turning into grin again.

Maynard was a fine gentleman with a glossy black hair over his head, but now he looked considerably battered and weary with disappointment. I’m no longer his fiancée, so he can’t expect any comfort from me. Perhaps, he should try asking Miss Most-Probable-Candidate turned Miss Not-Actually-Saintess, next to him. Although, I have to say, Lina, whose tear-stained face turned beet red, looks to be too preoccupied with minding the giggling ladies surrounding her for that endeavor.

Lina has always been a domineering lady.

She thought herself the next saintess beyond any doubts, and spoiled herself with the surrounding gentlemen’s attention, while looking down on other ladies. She naturally had many enemies for it, but it increased even further when she stole the seat of the crown princess.

By no means do I mean to brag, but I have a considerable number of women friends. For that reason, all of those individuals turned hostile towards Lina upon my engagement’s annulment, and while I admit, I do feel somewhat sympathetic about it, she was just reaping what she sowed.

Lina, friends are precious treasures, you know?

They entertain you with girl’s talk before marriage, and after it, will reassuringly lend you their ears to hear your marital whinnings.

You could’ve kept a friend to comfort you in difficult times such as now. Rather, I say, why not use this opportunity create friendships for yourself? Ah, I got lost in these unnecessary meddlings.

‘Lady Aileen of House Conrad!’

It looks like my turn has come.

I raised my face to answer the call.

I steadily strolled towards the precious orb and stared at it for a moment.

Mhm, it truly looks like a standard crystal ball. Are they sure this is the real one?

After all, the only reason my turn came is that no one else was chosen.

All the ladies invited here are among the best candidates, and if you judge from the historical precedence, saintesses are almost often chosen within the first batch.

Could somebody have actually swapped the precious orb with a common glass crystal ball without their knowing?

‘Lady Conrad, please be quick.’

Oh, pardon me, sir. I was lost in thought.

Incidentally, there are still ten other candidates behind me, so of course, they’d wish me promptly, mhm.

I placed my hand on the jewel in the pedestal.

—That was when the unthinkable happened.

‘Huh?’

I inadvertently tilted my head out of curiosity.

The crystal ball—or precious orb as they call it—is going dazzling and glittery, though?

The entire surrounding went tumult while I was dumbfounded.

Could I possibly, actually be—

‘Congratulations, Lady! You have been chosen as the Saintess!’

Ah, the Saintess had been chosen, but you chose to congratulate her like she won a lottery.

I am already crestfallen and exhausted by everything, but please do excuse my behavior and allow me to express my sentiments.

I quickly turned towards Maynard’s direction and said—

—Serves you right, Maynard!

Not having the courage to voice them out, I conveyed my feelings to the prince by the movement of my lips.

MV/TL : Alas, I ended up picking the same genre, still. But by technicality, this isn’t a villainess novel, just so you know—or at least there’s no indication of it being an otome game from what I’ve read so far, so it’s fair game! At any rate, it was a pretty fun to read, and the chapters are short and easier to translate, so why not?
