After three months of endless training each night, Mo Xiaodan finally mastered the power of the Red Sun.

On her last morning, she went running to find Qin Xiu. She searched all over Wuye Palace. Not finding her, she slipped out of the palace and headed into the Demon Realm's capital, Sihesheng四和声 - name meaning "Four Harmonies". Wandering the streets, Mo Xiaodan looked everywhere for her friend.

"Qin Xiu! Qin Xiu! Guess what?!"

But her friend was nowhere to be seen. Saddened, she turned to head back home. On her way, she walked past an intricate gateway. Made entirely of white jade, it stood out amongst the trees that surrounded it. Vines snaked up the posts as weeds grew all around it. Curious, she tilted her head.

"What is this?"

Infusing some of her spiritual power into it, the gateway seemed to ignite. A misty haze appeared within it. Mo Xiaodan stretched out her hand towards the activated gateway. Her fingers disappeared inside the mist. Pulling her hand back, she stared at it.

"I wonder where it goes."

Looking around, she saw no one coming. Deciding to chance it, she put one foot inside the mist and stepped through.

Back in Wuye Palace, Mo Leiming sensed something was off. He called for his sworn brother. Not too long after, Qin Wu entered.

"Your Majesty, you called?"

"Yes, Xiaodan has a very curious nature. I fear something's happened."

"I'm sure she's just running around somewhere. She'll be back soon. Isn't she still cultivating the power of the Red Sun?"

"She mastered it last night. There's five months until she takes over the Demon Realm. Xiaodan cannot be this fleeting any longer."

"All right, all right, she's still young. Don't you remember what we were like at their age? We, too, always were messing around and getting into trouble. She will mature once she becomes the Demon Queen. Don't worry, Xiaodan knows her responsibilities to the Demon Realm."

Mo Leiming sighed. "I hope you're right, Qin Wu. If she doesn't return to Wuye Palace by tonight, send some men out to look for her. She can't have gone too far."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

— — —

Mo Xiaodan emerged from the gateway into an alley. She looked up and saw a light blue sky with a golden sun.

"I'm in the Mortal Realm?" she breathed. "Huh, interesting."

Why don't I just look around? Then I can go back.

She headed out onto the main avenue and soon blended in with the crowd. Her eyes grew wide at all of the vendors set up along the streets.

This city acts like Sihesheng, but the people are so weird. Everyone's bowing and constantly thanking each other. Are the mortals really like this?

Confused, she continued to wander the streets. Up ahead, she watched as someone bumped into another person. Some money spilled without either noticing. She dashed forward, looked around, and picked it up.

This Mortal Realm's currency is odd. The Demon Realm's currency is just spirit stone. But here, there's copper discs and silver and gold boat-looking objects. No spirit stones at all.

Turning, she saw a restaurant, and her stomach suddenly rumbled. Looking up, the sign read: Constellation Inn. Beneath it, another sign called it the best place in Nanjing.

Nanjing... why does that sound familiar? Oh! Nanjing is the Mortal Realm's current capital. From what Tutor He said, they change capitals sometimes. I don't understand why. Sihesheng has always been the Demon Realm's capital.

Shaking her head, Mo Xiaodan entered Constellation Inn. She sat down at an empty table. A waiter came running over.

"Miss, what would you like?"

"Uh, just a bowl of plain noodles and some tea is fine."

I can't give myself away. I have to be careful of what I eat.

"Okay, okay."

The waiter dashed off. Gossip flowed from others' lips, but Mo Xiaodan didn't pay attention. Until...

"Have you heard? Some crazies are saying there's been demon-spotting here in Nanjing! Isn't that ridiculous? Hahahahaha!"

"Yeah, like demons are just wandering the streets here. The kingdom has been peaceful for a long time. What makes those crazies think there's anyone out there?"

"Right? If there really are demons, I'll show them not to mess with us!"

"I will too!"

"Me also!"

Mo Xiaodan turned her head slightly away. Tutor He and Royal Father weren't wrong. The mortals really do hate us.

"Miss, your tea."

The waiter had returned with a pot and a cup.

"Thank you, sir."

He nodded. "Your noodles should be out soon."

She smiled and waved it off. "No rush."

The waiter bowed again and left. Her face changed once he was gone.

At least mortals can't sense demons' spirits. They'll only recognize us if we change our form.

She sipped her tea and sighed. "I wonder where Qin Xiu went. I should go back and find her."

Just then, the waiter came back with a tray. On it was a steaming hot bowl of noodles. He picked up the bowl and set it down in front of her. Placing the chopsticks next to it, he bowed.

"Enjoy, Miss."

"Thank you."

She hurried to finish her meal and set down the money she had grabbed. Done, Mo Xiaodan exited Constellation Inn and returned to the alley where she had appeared. But much to her shock and dismay, there was no return portal there. Spinning around, she began to panic.

"What? How am I supposed to get home? How do I get back? Can I even contact Lord Qin or my Royal Father?"

Just then, she heard a, "Miss, are you lost?"

A creepy man with a strange light in his eyes approached her. Mo Xiaodan started to back away from him.

"W- who are you? Get away!"

He laughed. "Miss, if you come with me, I can treat you well. Don't worry."

She turned and sprinted down the alley. He pursued her and quickly caught up. Grabbing her shoulders, she fought to no avail. Flattening his hand, he chopped at an acupoint in her neck, knocking her unconscious. Chuckling, he threw her body over his shoulder and disappeared into a shadowy alley nearby.
