Mo Xiaodan wandered the streets of Nanjing aimlessly. Just as she made her way to the entrance gate, a bright white light shot through the sky. It came bounding down towards the ground. When the celestial glow dissipated, a beautiful woman appeared. Intrigued, Mo Xiaodan crept forward.
The beautiful woman eyed her. "What are you doing here in the Mortal Realm, demon?"
"I walked through a gateway and then got stuck here. Y- you... aren't you a Celestial Fox?"
The woman's eyes widened. "You can even recognize that?"
"Weren't you, too, a Nine Tailed Fox demon once? You just happened to ascend to the Heaven Realm and become a spiritual beast for a God."
"I'm impressed. You know a lot for being so young. Alright, I'm here to deal with the rampant demons that keep harming humans. You aren't one of them, are you?"
Mo Xiaodan shook her head. "I just arrived here in the Mortal Realm yesterday."
"Good. Keep out of trouble and leave the humans alone. Or else, I won't spare you!"
"I understand."
"Good. My name is Guo Wuyin郭无垠 - Boundless. If you need me, take this shell and speak into it. I will be able to hear your call."
Guo Wuyin handed her a shining, crème and light pink conch shell. Mo Xiaodan held it in her hands gently.
"Thank you, Guo Wuyin. I will be sure to remember your kindness," she said as she bowed.
Using her spiritual powers, she put the conch shell away. Guo Wuyin nodded and walked past her. Left alone, Mo Xiaodan continued on towards the gate. Just at its base, she looked up.
Activating her qinggong, she flew up. When she landed on the roof, she sat down facing the city.
All the lights and bustling activity is a lot like Sihesheng. I just wish Xiu Xiu could be here to see it with me. I think she'd enjoy it.
"It's an amazing sight, isn't it?"
"AHH!"
Startled, Mo Xiaodan lost her balance and almost pitched forward. A hand shot out and caught her before she fell off the roof.
"Careful, Young Miss."
She turned around to see a charming young man. With a wide smile and gentle black eyes, his countenance was quite relaxed. The sides of his jet black hair was braided and tied back into a topknot. Holding the knot in was a purple ribbon. Through a slit in the ribbon wrapping, a simple silver hairpin was stuck. He wore a simple purple and light grey Zhiju.
"M- Mo Xiaodan," she stammered. "My name is Mo Xiaodan."
The man's smile widened. "Ren Song任耸 - Lofty."
"Is this just a coincidence, Young Master Ren, or did you follow me up here?"
He chuckled and released her wrist. "Firstly, you can just call me Brother Song哥 (ge) is used as an honorific for people near the same age and who are friends. Secondly, I usually come up here to cultivate in the morning. I was just surprised to see you here."
"I'm new to the city and wanted to take in the sights."
"Ahh, yes, Nanjing is very lovely."
Mo Xiaodan turned to leave. "I don't want to interrupt your cultivation. Perhaps I'll see you around, Brother Song?"
He grinned further and nodded. "Sure."
She flew down and landed on the ground. Looking up, she gave Ren Song a little wave before disappearing into the growing crowd.

Later in the afternoon, Mo Xiaodan was sitting out in front of a restaurant, eyes closed. When shade fell over her, her eyes fluttered open. Glancing up, a tall figure stood in front of her.
"First Young Master Gongsun?"
"Young Lady Mo, come with me."
Hearing the sadness and urgency in his words, she nodded and hopped to her feet. She followed him over to the Magistrate's residence. Or... what was left of it. Upon seeing the place where she had just stayed, her eyebrows shot up.
"The fire did all of this?"
Gongsun Li nodded. "And... I'm the only one left in my family. That wicked demon slaughtered everyone, from children to the elderly."

Mo Xiaodan took a step closer to him. "I'm so sorry, First Young Master-"
He held up a hand, silencing her. "There's no need for the title. I'm not the First Young Master of the Gongsun family anymore."
"Then how should I address you?"
"Gongsun Li will do."
She nodded. "Okay."
After an awkward moment's silence, she added, "Do you have any place to stay now? Your home is burned to ashes and rubble."
He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Don't remind me."
Mo Xiaodan remained silent, letting him think. She looked around. People were leaning together, whispering, and pointing towards the burned Magistrate's residence. She felt sorry for Gongsun Li but also knew there was a reason behind why the Black Tiger demon did what he did.
What am I supposed to do? Kill my own subjects to help the mortals? Isn't that betraying my own kind? But as a ruler, shouldn't I maintain order and control over my demons? If they run rampant in the Mortal Realm, how can I call myself the Demon Queen in the future? I'll have no standing, no respect. Oh, what would Royal Father do?
"I know a place where we can go," Gongsun Li said at last, pulling her from her thoughts.
"Where?"
"The Nie household. They're old friends of my family. I'm sure they'll take us in."
Mo Xiaodan shook her head. "I'm no relation to you. Why would they take me in? Just on your word? No, you should go find them. I think I'll roam the city a bit longer."
"Young Lady Mo..." he began, reaching out towards her.
She took a step back. "Don't worry, Gongsun Li. I'm a Taoist cultivator, remember? I can handle myself."
Before he could reply, she spun on her heels and skipped off. As she rounded a corner, she accidentally bumped into a sturdy chest.
Stepping back, she said, "I'm so sorry! I wasn't watch-"
A baritone chuckle echoed from above her. "It seems we're destined to meet again, Sister Xiaodan."
She looked up to see Ren Song. "Sorry."
"It's alright. Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
"Nowhere and everywhere."
"Hmm. You're intriguing. I like that."
Mo Xiaodan blushed and looked away. "Brother Song flatters me. I'm not worthy."
Is he a mortal? Or some sort of cultivator?
"Nonsense. You have a quick wit and attractive looks. Therefore, I should flatter you."
Ren Song glanced at her. "Are you a martial artist? I noticed earlier that your qinggong is quite good."
She shook her head. "I'm a Taoist cultivator."
"Ohh. From where?"
She hesitated before answering, "Mount Fengyu."
His eyes changed slightly before appearing calm and carefree again. The change had been so quick, Mo Xiaodan wondered if she had just imagined it.
"You must be from far away then," he began. "I've not heard of there before."
"It is quite far."
Ren Song stepped closer to her and leaned into her ear. "Perhaps far enough away to be a Realm away?"
Mo Xiaodan froze.
He continued, "I've heard that Sihesheng is a spectacular city, built into the summit of a mountain. Just above it is a magnificent palace where a powerful king rules. Tell me, Sister Xiaodan, is the Demon Realm's capital worthy of its reputation?"
