Gongsun Li gently pulled her to her feet.
"You never did say where you were from."
"It's a place far far away. First Young Master Gongsun, have you ever heard of Mount Fengyu风雨 - Wind Rain?"
Gongsun Li's eyebrows furrowed. "No, I don't think I have."
"It's normal that you wouldn't. Mount Fengyu is nowhere near Nanjing. I come from the clan that lives there."
You just don't need to know that Sihesheng is located on Mount Fengyu.
"Oh. Then you really have journeyed a long ways, Young Lady Mo."
Mo Xiaodan nodded. "I've never been away from home before. I'm just homesick I guess."
"Why don't you come back with me? I can get you settled for the night at least."
And if you find out that you invited a demon into your house? What then?
"I wouldn't dare inconvenience you, First Young Master Gongsun."
"Nonsense, come along."
Realizing he wouldn't give in, she compromised. "Alright, but just for one night. I'll find my own lodging tomorrow."
As she followed Gongsun Li back to the Magistrate's residence, the fox demon's words echoed in her mind. Save the others, Your Highness. Open the gateway. Stay away from that demon hunter.
Mo Xiaodan thought to herself, Am I really making the wrong choice here? But humans can't innately sense demons? Unless I reveal something un-human about me, then isn't it unlikely that First Young Master Gongsun will find out my identity?

At the Magistrate's residence, Gongsun Li led Mo Xiaodan inside. They walked over to the guest room. He slid open the bamboo doors, and she entered.
It's not my own room, but...
"It's nice. This room works just fine. I have no complaints."
"That's good. I'll send a maid over with some food."
"Thank you, First Young Master Gongsun."
"Of course. Get some rest soon, I'm sure today has been quite tiring."
She nodded.
"Goodnight, then, Young Lady Mo."
"Goodnight."
He slid the doors shut. Once he was gone, Mo Xiaodan shuddered.
"Am I really safe here?" she murmured to herself.
She sat down at the table and sighed. But she wasn't alone for long.
A maid came over promptly, delivering a tray filled with a bowl of dan dan noodles, stir-fried vegetables, egg drop soup, and a pot of steaming hot chrysanthemum tea. Chopsticks and a soup spoon were placed on the table, along with a small pinming cup for the tea.
"Thank you," Mo Xiaodan said gratefully. "And give First Young Master Gongsun my thanks as well."
The maid bowed and retreated. Just as she left, a man entered. Alarmed, Mo Xiaodan stood and stumbled backwards, nearly tripping over the chair.
"W- who are you?" she stammered.
"I could ask the same of you. I thought I smelled demon blood when you entered with the First Young Master."
She froze and breathed, "You're a demon!"
"Yes, and I've been monitoring the Gongsun family for a long time. They're mine."
"What do you mean?"
"Don't play dumb. I'm not going to let you just come in here and ruins my plans."
"A- are you going to kill the Magistrate?" she gasped.
"No, I'm going to kill the whole Gongsun family. They've been hunting demons for generations. It's about time we wipe them out."
Mo Xiaodan shuddered. "Surely the whole family isn't guilty?"
"Would you really leave survivors to come and hunt us down later?" he scoffed.
Mortals hate demons. And these demons hate mortals.
"Little one," he mocked. "I suggest you leave before this residence is burned to the ground."
"Do you know who I am?" she shot back.
He laughed. "Tell me, little one."

"You're a Black Tiger demon, right?" she asked as she raised an eyebrow.
He choked. "H- how did you know that?"
"Because I've been taught how to recognize all of the demon clans. Each demon is from a clan. You... are from the Black Tiger Clan."
The Black Tiger stared at her in shock. Mo Xiaodan smirked.
"Who are you?" he breathed.
Suddenly, her form began to change. As her beauty increased tenfold, her eyes turned red. A shining gleam fell over her hair. Her skin became pure white.
"Demon Charm," she said in a honey-sweet voice.
His eyes flashed red, and he fell under her spell.
In the same tone of voice, she added, "You are not going to remember this in the morning. You will forget you ever saw me."
Stuck in a trance, the Black Tiger nodded. He shuffled out of her room and returned from whence he came. After he had gone, Mo Xiaodan returned to her human form and sat back down at the table. Calmly, as if nothing was wrong, she picked up the chopsticks and began to eat.

The next morning, she woke up before the crack of dawn and slipped out of the guest room. Just as she was about to leave, the smell of something burning pervaded her sense of smell. Whipping around, she saw flames rising up from one of the buildings in the residence.
That demon said this residence would burn... oh no! This is bad!
Unable to walk away, Mo Xiaodan rushed towards the burning building. She ran past slaughtered maids, mutilated guards, and dozens of dead Gongsun family members. Horrified to the core, she ran faster, making sure none of the dead was Gongsun Li.
The fire was spreading; and soon, almost the entire residence was up in flames. She stopped running and spun around. Seeing nothing but corpses and flames, she worried that she was too late. Then, there was a tug on her sleeve.
"This way!"
It was Gongsun Li. She fled with him to a side exit and slipped out of the Magistrate's residence. Once they were deep into the heart of Nanjing, the two finally stopped running.
Worried, Mo Xiaodan turned to look at him. "First Young Master Gongsun, I swear it wasn't me! When I woke up, there were already flames!"
He shook his head. "Don't worry, Young Lady Mo. I know it wasn't you."
Gongsun Li's eyes narrowed with hatred. "There was another demon in the household. A Black Tiger demon. He was the one who started the fire. And to think, my father trusted him for so many years."
"Ordinary mortals cannot sense demons. That's why they can blend in and people won't even know they're there."
"How? Oh, right. You're a Taoist cultivator."
She nodded. "Unfortunately, my skills are limited. I'm sorry, First Young Master Gongsun. I didn't sense a demon at all."
"It's not your fault, Young Lady Mo. I thought my family's household was rid of demons. Apparently it wasn't."
"T- that demon... did you kill him?"
He glanced at her with a serious look in his eye. "Yes."
She turned away. "Perhaps he did what he did out of-"
"All demons attack us because of malicious intent."
"Do you think they could just be avenging their own? Humans hun them down. Why wouldn't they fight back?"
Gongsun Li gaped at her. "Young Lady Mo, are you speaking up for those ill-bred demons?!"
Lowering her head, she murmured, "What if there are some demons that aren't ill-bred?"
He shook his head and scoffed, "Impossible."
"First Young Master Gongsun, not all demons are evil."
"Is that what your Taoist teachings are? Perhaps, you cultivators should come down from your high positions and see the real world for once. Demons are malevolent. They're pure evil. I've never seen a demon do an act of good."
"That fox demon last night saved me. She could've let the arrow strike me instead and fled. But she didn't. Surely, your views are a little biased because of what's happened to you in the past?"
His eyes narrowed. "Gods are for good. Demons are for evil."
"Then what about mortals? Last I knew, there are three realms, not two."
"Mortals are the mixture, the balance between the two."
Mo Xiaodan sighed. "Your opinions will never change. I see that now. I suppose I should say farewell then. Our beliefs are too different for our paths to remain intertwined."
Gongsun Li hesitated. "W- where will you go, Young Lady Mo?"
"I'll find someplace to stay. Don't worry about me, First Young Master Gongsun."
She waved goodbye to him and walked away. A single tear slid down her cheek.
It's best to leave now. If I stay, I'll only end up revealing myself.
