Chapter 138: A Thousand Pieces

Xia Sha had heard grandfather Xia's retell how grandfather Xiao helped him when he almost got capture by the enemy. 

Thirty years ago, grandfather Xia was a trainee for the army's elite team. He received a mission to disguise himself as a spy and steal confidential data from the enemy post. 

Grandfather Xiao is an outstanding soldier. He stands out from the rest of the candidates. He is elected to be grandfather Xia's team leader n that particular mission. Long story short, grandfather Xia almost got caught when he copies the data. 

Disregarding his own life, Grandfather Xiao rushed into the room to cover for Grandfather Xia. They knocked out -as grandfather Xia would say- more than twenty men and returned in victory. 

However, grandfather Xiao's index and the middle finger has to pay for that victory. The enemy was brutal, and they barely make it out alive. When grandfather Xiao tried to close the door to prevent them from coming, they pulled grandfather Xiao's hand and clamped in against the door gap. 

"It was horrible," said grandfather Xia. 

Grandfather Xia's eyes would redden every time the images of Grandfather's Xiao brimming with tears while holding the pain appear on his mind. 

But what break grandfather's Xia heart a lot is how his best friend lost the opportunity to enter the elite team because of him. Later, grandfather Xiao quitted the army because of his matters. 

He inherited his family's company and living a blissful life until now. 

"Old man, I'm so thankful for you," grandfather Xia suddenly turned melancholic as he grabbed grandfather Xiao's hand. Grandfather Xiao patted his hand gently as he shook his head. 

"No. I should be the one who thanked you instead. Your faith and loyalty for me had me become who I am today, One friend in a storm worth more than a thousand friends in the sunshine." Grandfather Xiao quoted Matshona Dhliwayo. 

Grandfather Xia smiled and nodded his head in agreement. His eyes shone, showing how he admired grandfather Xiao. Grandfather Xiao gaze then travel to Xia Sha.

"Xia Sha, thank you for growing up so well too," He said.

Xia Sha sat on the side and watched them with a warm smile on her face. Honestly, she could cry as she watched their beautiful friendship, but upon remembering their intention behind, she couldn't. 

Her smile froze. She couldn't fathom the meaning behind grandfather Xiao's words. Heck, she wasn't even sure he wanted to imply something under his gratefulness. 

She tried to normalize her expression and voice, answering grandfather Xiao in courtesy. 

Grandfather Xiao only stayed for another ten minutes before he decided to go away. He did not mention anything about marriage, not even mentioning Xiao Zhan's name. Xia Sha was grateful. 

But she quickly regretted praising grandfather Xiao's in her heart when she realized it's a trap from the start. 

After grandfather Xiao's figure disappear, grandfather Xia calls her to tell yet, another great story of grandfather Xiao. In every sentence, he would imply that their family was indebted to the Xiao family. 

"Sigh. Xiao Jun is useless. Grandfather Xiao had given up on him a long time ago. His only source of happiness is Xiao Yu and Xiao Zhan. Xiao Yu will be married soon. He isn't relentless for him. But Xiao Zhan, his heart were set on you." 

Xia Sha looked down and maintained her gentle smiles. It took her a while to looked up and answer grandfather Xia. 

"Hm, although marrying is a good thing, but too many good things happened at once is not wise. Brother Xiao Yu is going to marry Zheng Shuang. I believe Zheng Shuang could help Xiao Zhan finding his happiness." 

Hearing Xia Sha's refusal, grandfather Xiao did not get agitated. Instead, he nods his head and calmly said, "Grandpa understand. Grandpa won't force you anymore. It just a pity grandpa can't repay his kindness toward me. But I knew it's not your obligation to do so. Grandpa only wishes you happiness." 

Since their big fought times ago, Xia Sha always imagines how she would make up with her grandfather. Both of them were stubborn. Once they made their decision, even seven horses couldn't pull them. Xia Sha imagines a big fight. 

And she promised herself not to get wronged. 

But when she heard his grandfather's gentle tone, her heart got softened. She watched his eyes curled into a smile, wrinkled decorate his kind face. 

What to do? Xia Sha did not expect this kind of attack! She almost crumbles. 

"Grandfather heard you start going out with young master Guan?" Grandfather Xia unexpectedly knew about this. Xia Sha was stunned for a bit. When grandfather Xia watched Xia Sha's surprised face, he could not help but chuckle. 

"What? Grandfather isn't supposed to hear this gossip?" he teased. 

Xia Sha's shook her head while covering her blushing cheek.

"It's not gossip. But who told you?" 

Grandfather Xia sighed after hearing Xia Sha's question. He looks troubled but trying to appear cheerful. 

"Your grandfather Xiao come here today to clear his intention. He said that since Xiao Zhan, and you have no fate, we weren't supposed to force you two. He also congratulated you on dating young master Guan, wishing the two of you a long-lasting and happy relationship." 

"Oh," Xia Sha murmured. She did not know how to respond to her grandfather Xia right now. 

"Did he treat you well?" grandfather Xia suddenly asked. 

"He treats me extremely well that I felt insecure." 

Grandfather look relieved when he heard Xia Sha's word. He opens this mouth, was about to say something when he coughed heavily. Panicked, Xia Sha rushed to bring a glass of water for him. 

Grandfather Xia sipped some water before smiling weakly at Xia Sha. 

"Sigh. I'm old and rusty now." 

"Grandfather is not old at all. You can live another hundred years."

"Silly lass. Still talking nonsense," grandfather Xia clicked his tongue, but his hand moves to pat Xia Sha dotingly. Xia Sha smiles and happily let herself enjoy her grandfather's doting. 

As grandfather Xia looks at his beautiful granddaughter, he felt a tiny pinched on his heart. Guan Xian, that young master, wasn't he was a womanizer?

"Young Master Guan, are you sure you are not getting tricked by him?" Grandfather Xia's voice changed from warm to cold. Xia Sha looked up and found her grandfather's funny worried face, she giggles. 

"I think it's another way around. I wrapped him around my finger like a ring. He wouldn't bear the consequences to tricked me." 

Xia Sha's words did not make grandfather Xia's heart set at ease. His frown got deepen as he said, "I do have high regards for him as a business man, but I don't like his casanova style! Moreover, if you marry him in the future, can he guarantee his sister won't bully you again?" 

Ah, grandfather knew about her bumpy relationship with Xiao Ni too. He once comes to school because Xia Qi Feng and Shen Xia Fei had to attend their divorce trial. 

"Grandfather, we only started dating for one month," Xia Sha tried to calm her grandfather. Grandfather Xia knew that his rationality wouldn't win against their new relationship. He pressed his lips into a thin line. 

"Xia Sha, you choose the most dangerous family in the city. What can I do to protect you? How could I rest assured now?" he sounds helpless now. 

"I wouldn't get worried if you marry Xiao Zhan. At least they would never wrong you. But this Guan family..." Grandfather Xia never interacted with anyone from the Guan family except Xiao Ni. However, he also witnesses how Xiao Ni, the petite girl, hold so much power in her hand despite her young age. 

The Guan family knew they are powerful, and they weren't shameless to used it. What if they decided to bully her granddaughter in the future? With their family status, they won't be able to protect Xia Sha. 

"Grandfather, you told me not to believe false news and rumor," Xia Sha tried to soothed Grandfather Xia's worry. 

Grandfather Xia stared at her and took a deep breath. 

"I'm only worried about you. You never once confessed that you felt insecure, and it's only the beginning of your relationship. Grandpa just- cough! Cough! COUGH!" 

Grandfather Xia clutched his heart as he coughed. Xia Sha approached him in great worry. She wanted to press the button to call the nurse when grandfather Xia coughs blood out from his mouth. 

Xia Sha's eyes flares open. She looked at grandfather Xia slowly closed his eyes as he looks tired and runs out of breath. Her hand is trembling violently, but she forced her hand to pressed the button before she hugged grandfather Xia. 

"Grandpa! Grandpa! You wake up!" Xia Sha shouted like crazy as she shooked grandfather Xia's shoulder. 

Grandfather Xia used his remaining strength to open his eyes and smile at Xia Sha. He murmured, "Don't cry. Grandpa is alright." 

Xia Sha shooked her head and grabbed her grandfather's hand. 

"Yes! I won't cry. I hold unto your words. Grandfather, you need to be alright!" Xia Sha cried out. Her heart sank when her grandfather nods his head weakly.. He slowly closed his heavy eyelids while Xia Sha felt her heart had been smashed into a thousand pieces.
