Chapter 2: Unexpected Turn of Events

"Lily I'm back." Ron said as he closed the door of his house before removing his shoes and entering it. He walked towards the bedroom and opened the door. His sister was there laying on her bed with her head a little raised thanks to the pillows.

 

The book on her hand indicated that she was reading it before she heard Ron's voice. With a bright happy smile Lily said "Welcome back brother. How was your day?"

 

"It went amazing. My skills are pretty good as a result the boss gave assigned me to some after hours for her. The best part? The pay I'll be getting for each extra hour. Don't worry Lily, I'll earn a lot of money and will make sure that you'll get a kidney transplant surgery soon." Ron said enthusiastically but during the end his voice toned down as he looked at the dialysis machine his sister was attached to.

 

Lily during this whole time didn't lost her bright smile and said cheerfully "That's great! I'll be waiting for brother to become rich then."

 

Seeing the bright smile on his sister's face all of Ron's worries disappeared for a moment before they strengthened. He needed to do whatever he could inorder make sure that the smile of her little sister's face won't fade away.

 

"How was your school...I mean your online classes?" Ron asked as he remembered that the schools had been closed down since last three days due to the spread of a contagious disease which does more harm to minors than to adults.

 

"It was alright, thanks to classes being online I'm not as exhausted as I used to be earlier and now even have energy left to read story books after revising today's lessons." Lily said as she showed the book on her hand to Ron.

 

Ron felt happy seeing his sister all happy and told her to continue her reading as he went to freshen himself up after which he prepared the dinner for the two of them. 

 

Lily who was now sitting on the dinning table gazed at the busy back of her elder brother who was preparing the dinner for the two of them. Her face no longer carried the happy smile which she was displaying earlier instead, it was a face filled with guilt, guilt of making her brother work so hard to take care of her.

 

Ron soon came to the table and placed the meal for Lily on the table before doing the same for himself. Lily carried the same smile on her face as earlier and delightfully ate the meal while complementing her brother's cooking.

After switching off the lights to his sister's room Ron went to the living room and laid on the couch. The couch was barely big enough for a single person as a result it felt a bit cramped but was manageable.

 

Staring at the ceiling Ron sighed deeply to relax his body as he slowly closed his eyes. After a couple of seconds his chest started moving in a slow and rhythmic pattern indicating that he had entered the world of dreams but in his case it would be right to call it the world of nightmares.

 

Not a single day has passed since his parent's accident that he hasn't dreamt of their death. The night when his world turned upside down. That moment continued to haunt him every single day giving him a break only when he was awake.

 

If it was someone else they might have become mad or insomniac but not Ron. He kept on fighting the terror of sleeping because he didn't wanted to add his sister's death in his nightmare aswell. So despite this he kept on going.

"I've given you the account details, transfer all the money to it from a secure link." said a matured looking woman as she gazed out from the glass window of her office.

 

If Ron was here he would have easily recognised this woman because she was his boss. The woman carried a smirk of ridicule on her face as she said to herself "You think you all can so easily steal my research and I would let you all do so? I originally planned on erasing everything so that I can laugh at you all from hell."

 

Ron's face soon came up in her mind "I'm a very selfish woman, I never thought that I would end up doing something good for someone... though it's also because I don't want to completely destroy my discovery. It doesn't matter now, they'll never be able to replicate it with the documents that they stole because the key ingredient is in my DNA." she chuckled thinking about Ron and then gulped the the glass in her hands containing wine in a single shot.

 

After finishing the glass she throwed it downwards with great force making the glass shatter. She then took out a controller from the inside of her suit and stared at it while hovering her thumb over the only button that was on the controller.

 

"This is it then." She took one last deep breath and pressed the button.

 

*Thud*

 

Ron fell down the couch and slammed hard on the ground making him groan with pain as he slowly came out of his sleepy state. Sitting on the ground now with his back resting on the bottom of the couch he massaged his head while thinking of what all things needed to be done today.

 

After a while Ron stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for his sister and himself and after finishing that he went to the bathroom to freshen up.

 

By the time Ron returned the food was already served on the table with Lily seated and waiting for him. Ron shook his head while smiling as he ate the breakfast with his sister. He had already told her many times not to exert herself so much but she always comes back with an a snarky reply making him shut up. So he had given up on lecturing her.

 

"Alright Lily, I'll be going now." Ron said.

 

"Ok brother, Stay safe." Lily said as she bid her brother goodbye.

 

After exiting the subway on his way to his office building Ron could somehow feel that something was not alright because of the increasing crowd as well as the shock and surprise filled faces of the crowd.

 

He quickened his footsteps and after a while the sounds of sirens entered his ears which was followed by a building covered in flames. Firetrucks were doing their best to remove the fire but it was only to save the surrounding building. His office no longer existed, in its place only a pile of rubble will be left.

 

"Did you hear that the Boss of this branch office was also there when the explosion took place? Apparently she was single and was also quite sexy. If only.." Rom heard a few youngsters who were discussing about the incident with each other.

 

"She's dead...?" Ron muttered lowly. It was just yesterday that he saw her...felt her...and now she's gone? Ron's mind was a mess currently. He turned around and started slowly walking in a random direction in a daze.
