Chapter 1 : She’s Starting to Study – Part 1
“Ehh! What the h**l!? That happened!?”
“Yeah, seriously, seriously! I fell in love with that accessory at first sight, and when I went home to get my money, it had already sold out! Isn’t that amazing? I was so surprised~”
Suddenly, such a voice reached his ears. Shoichi Kashima, who had just recently started his first year of high school, took his eyes off the book he was reading and turned towards it. It wasn’t that the content of the conversation bothered him. He was simply surprised at how loud the voice was.
The classroom was filled with a lively buzz of voices. This was because it was lunchtime and the students were still playing around. They were talking about a great variety of things, like the most viral videos, the newest cosmetics. Where should they go to play this time? And when should they do that?
“How about a live concert?”
“Eh, I prefer karaoke.”
“That might be good too since it’s been a while for me.”
The noise was especially noticeable coming from the girls in the center of the classroom, who were wearing their uniforms lavishly with makeup, accessories and other decorations. The voices that had interrupted Shoichi’s reading also came from these girls.
“Aaah, I wish I had that bracelet. I just had to forget my wallet just then. I really wanted to look like Sa*e-san.”
“What’s with that, that’s hilarious! Don’t worry, you’ll find another good one soon enough!”
“Yeah. And the fact that it sold out quickly means that you have a good eye for accessories. Just knowing that is a plus, don’t you think?”
“Ehehe, is that so? Can I trust you on that?”
“Yeah, of course you can! But you better carry a purse next time!”
With that, came a lot of laughter. It was enough to light up the classroom. These girls were the so-called ‘gals’, and they had been attracting a lot of attention, mainly from the boys, as the most sophisticated girls in the class.
“Our class girls are really pretty, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, yeah, I think they’re high-level.”
“I’m glad I got into this school.”
The men elbowed each other and laughed as they muttered, “Maybe we should invite them to play with us next time.”
It really was the kind of sexual behaviour typical of an adolescent boy. But Shoichi wasn’t the least bit interested in that sort of thing.
I can’t afford to play… If I have free time for that, I’d rather study.
He mumbled inwardly and looked at the cover of the book he had just been reading. It was not a manga or a light novel for teenagers. It was an academic book for the purpose of acquiring knowledge. It was his principle that while you are a student, you should be diligent in your studies.
It wasn’t that he liked to study. However, it would be better for him to accumulate a wealth of knowledge and make it easier for him to pursue his desired path in the future. In other words, he was rational. With his serious nature, or rather, a bit stern, he was always in pursuit of rational behavior.
His current life was one of stoicism, reading and studying to increase his knowledge, whether on breaks or at home, and he was far off from entertainment such as cosmetics, live concerts, and karaoke. Though cosmetics would always be far from him no matter what. Naturally, he was not interested in the gals either. He just thought that they were a bit noisy.
If they’re going to have a lot of chit-chat, they might as well make it a more educated topic…like about the new regenerative medicine cell that has been recently discovered that goes beyond what we have seen so far. That has a lot to do with the organ transplant issue, which I’m also interested in.
Although someone might say, “That’s not gyaru-like, you know~”, Shoichi was rather serious about it. He had a simple mind that didn’t like to talk about the same things as other people.
Shoichi’s secret hope was, of course, impossible to be realized, and the gals continued their conversation, switching from one topic to the other in seconds.
“…Also, did you know? Looks like that video was pretty popular. I had no idea it would be deleted. I was so surprised!”
“Deleted? What the h**l did that guy do?”
“Mhmm, no idea. Probably something really bad? They even deleted the account.”
“What’s with that? That’s so interesting and edgy!”
As he could tell by observing the girls closely, the blonde girl in the middle of the room was the main topic of conversation. Her voice was loud and cheerful, and she had a carefree laugh. Whenever that girl talked about something or gave a reaction, laughter leaked out from the people around her. It was not out of mockery, but rather out of affinity. That’s how much power she had over people. When Shoichi reconfirmed this, he had a complicated feeling.
That girl really–
These words suddenly came to his mind.
The innocent smile on her face was as neat as a doll’s and as adorable as a child’s. Her wavy blonde hair was pulled up to the side, and she wore makeup on her face that was neither too dark nor too light, emphasizing her natural parts. On her fingers, she had fake nails for nail art, and her eyes were a little thin, as she was probably wearing colored contacts.
The collar of her uniform was sloppily open, and her hands were hidden by the oversized sleeves. Actually, she was not as well-groomed as the other gals, but the fact that she still looked flashy was probably the result of her natural charm.
As he watched her, Shoichi said the rest of what he had just said in a somewhat sentimental voice.
“…That girl really has changed.”
“What? Do you know Yuzuki, Kashima?”
Suddenly, a male student who was passing by asked. It seemed that he overheard Shoichi’s mumbling. Feeling embarrassed that he was being overheard talking to himself, Shoichi replied in a whisper.
“Eh? Ah, um, well…”
“Wow, that’s surprising. You’re such a serious and honorable student, but you’re acquainted with such a cute girl.”
“It’s not like that…. And I’m not even an honor student. You’re overestimating me.”
“Again, again, don’t be modest, alright? You’re always reading, preparing for class, and reviewing even during breaks. You’re a fine honor student. But, well… I think you could be a little more sociable around people.”
Shoichi had to admit that was true. He didn’t have many friends. It would even be fair to say that he didn’t have any. He spent most of his breaks studying and reading, and the only people he talked to were his classmates who cared for him and talked to him occasionally.

To tell the truth, it was not his intention to be so solitary. No matter how much he believed that students should study, it seemed unreasonable for him to sacrifice his time off and his affection for his classmates to devote himself to his studies. However, he began to study day and night because of a certain ‘circumstance’ when he entered high school.
As Shoichi finished his recollections, his classmate looked at the cover of the book he was holding and frowned.
“But you do read some weird stuff sometimes.”
“Eh, weird? Is that so?”
“Yeah, like this one… ‘National Yokai Sightings’? The title sounds like it’s about yokai, but yokai is an occult and superstition. You’re not an elementary school student anymore…”
“What are you talking about! Occults can be a subject of academic research! In the first place, dismissing it as a superstition in itself is a taunt to the intellectual act. It’s only once you analyze it scientifically that you’ll be able to–“
“Uwa, uwa, don’t talk so fast! Okay, okay, I get it, it’s an important subject for you. I’m sorry for interrupting your reading.”
Then, with a wry smile, he went to a different acquaintance while muttering, “That guy has a weird switch, doesn’t he…”
After watching his back, Shoichi turned his gaze back to the girl called ‘Yuzuki’. She still had the same carefree expression as ever, and was laughing uproariously.
–That’s surprising. You’re acquainted with her.
Shoichi let out a vague sigh as the point the guy had just made flashed through his mind.
Actually, it’s more than just an acquaintance.
Shoichi knew the girl, ‘Amiru Yuzuki’ really well. He had known her since before he could remember. She had been a friend of his since kindergarten, and they did almost everything together. In other words, they were childhood friends.
When she was a child, Amiru was rather plain, withdrawn and would always hide behind Shoichi. However, when she entered junior high school, she was lured by her friends and made her debut as a gal.
Amiru fits into that world rather easily, doesn’t she? Thanks to this, she started to hang out with her flashy friends… And I kind of stopped talking to her.
Right now, they were completely estranged. This did not change even though they happened to be in the same high school and even the same classroom. There were a few times when she tried to talk to him. But each time she did, her friends around her started talking to her, and Amiru was dragged along with them. After all, it seemed that his serious and uptight self and her flashy and cheerful self lived in different worlds.
“No, that’s definitely not true!”
The innocent but boisterous laughter bounced for the umpteenth time today, and Shoichi somehow closed his eyes. The person there was no longer the childhood friend he knew.
Well, just because we used to be close, doesn’t mean it’s normal to be that way forever. I’ll go my way, and Amiru will go hers… That’s just how life is.
He thought absentmindedly. And then in his vision, he could see Amiru staring at the back of her hand.
“Eh, what’s this?”
“What’s the matter?”
“There’s a 30% discount on radishes at the supermarket today…”
“””Eh?”””
These words caused not only the girls around her, but also Shoichi to shout out loud.
Why would a high school girl, who was embarrassed even by flowers, suddenly be talking about discounted radishes?
In his confused vision, he saw Amiru hurriedly scratching her head charmingly, saying, “Yaah, it’s nothing.”
Her friends, who had been puzzled, regained their laughter.
“Wait, Amiru, what’s up with that? That’s too funny!”
“Amiru sometimes says the strangest things.”
“Well, that’s what makes her so cute and natural.”
It seemed that her reputation had not been ruined by her eccentricities. For the time being, he felt relieved.
No, Amiru’s not my problem anymore…
The two of them had gone their separate ways. There was no longer any chance for them to interact.
Shoichi murmured a little sadly in his heart and started reading again.
After school that day.
Shoichi was stopped by his homeroom teacher. He wanted to talk to him about something. Most of the students were in their club activities, and no one was left in the classroom. In the midst of this, the teacher suddenly said something like this to Shoichi.
“Kashima, you don’t belong to any particular club, do you?”
“Yeah, I’m in the go-home club.”
“That’s just perfect. Teach this girl how to study for a while.”
Shoichi blinked at his words and said, “What?”
When the teacher moved the girl, who had been hiding behind his back, forward, his expression changed to one of astonishment. She had a doll-like face, a fancy outfit, and blonde hair in a side-up.
“Yahoo, please take care of me!”
She winked shyly at him, and he knew without a doubt that the girl was Amiru Yuzuki.
