Ch. 46: Improvements to the Barrier Generator

I was eating breakfast with Hati.

It was already noon, so this was actually not breakfast but lunch.

Lunch consisted of freshly baked bread and water.

But the freshly baked bread was incredibly good.

Hati: “It’s so delicious!”

Werner: “Which do you like better? The dried ration bread or this?” Hati: “The dried ration bread has its own unique deliciousness! Hati cannot say which is better so easily!”

Werner: “I see.”

If it was anyone human, 10 out of 10 people would say the freshly baked bread tastes better.

But now that I think about it, if you ask me if dried ration bread and regular bread can be classified differently, it probably can.

As I ate the fresh-baked bread, I began drawing out the Bread Baking Magecraft Artifact that could be mass produced.

If that’s the case, I need to limit the number of parts required to put it together.

I need to lower the requirements for production, the difficulty in making each part, and the difficulty of putting it all together.

By the time I was done eating the bread, I had a general blueprint in mind.

That’s why as I finished my bread, I began working busily with my hands to start making the prototype.

Hati: “......my Lord, you are a very hard worker.”

Werner: “Not really. A lot of things happened yesterday, so this is just for fun to take my mind off.”

Hati: “For fun…….” Werner: “That’s right. If I get tired of making a Magecraft Artifact for my job, I usually switch to making a simple Artifact that’s been on my mind for fun for stress release.”

Hati: “Is that your hobby?”

Werner: “Yeah, but this one will be delivered to the Oigen Merchant Group, so I guess it’s part of official business.”

Hati: “It can only be considered as work.”

Werner: “But this is an easy adjustment and improvement to an existing design. It’s almost like a brain exercise like doing a simple puzzle.”

Hati: “.......ah, Hati sees….that’s still amazing though…”

And for whatever reason, Hati drew back awkwardly.

30 minutes later, I completed a prototype of the mass-production Bread Baking Magecraft Artifact.

Hati: “...........it’s already finished?”

Werner: “No, we’re not done yet. I need to record how to make this in my notes and make sure that the Magecraft Artisans will be able to make this too.”

And I began meticulously diagramming the blueprint with step by step instructions.

After 30 minutes, that was done too.

Werner: “Now then……” Hati: “Are we heading to the Oigen Group?”

Werner: “No, break time is over. Let’s get into designing a more difficult Artifact.”

Hati: “What……? You are working too much.”

Werner: “Not really. This is actually a very relaxed pace for me.”

Hati: “My Lord, you need to revisit the definition of relaxation in the dictionary.”

In my new notebook, I began recording the necessary functions for the Magecraft Artifact.

This time, this Artifact will be quite difficult to design, so I’m not sure how long this will take.

Hati: “My Lord, what are you going to make next?” Werner: “Well, Hati, you helped me with making the Barrier Generating Magecraft Artifact last time.”

Hati: “Yes, Hati helped, and we made that! Even now, it is protecting this research lab!”

Werner: “Yes. But during the incident last night, I found a weakness, or rather, a shortcoming to the Barrier Generator.”

Hati: “A shortcoming? But I believe it would have completely shut out the enemies’ attacks….”

Werner: “There’s no issues there. Rather, the problem is the fact that it was done too perfectly.”

Hati: “What do you mean?” Hati tilted her head in confusion.

Werner: “Well, it was able to contain sound, impact, heat, and light, correct?” Hati: “Yes, it was an amazing feat. Because of that, Hati did not even realize that My Lord was fighting.”

Werner: “In other words, that’s the problem.” Hati: “What is?” Hati again, was puzzled and tilted her head in the exact same angle.

Werner: “For instance, what if there’s an enemy I cannot defeat, but I generate a barrier to survive.”

Hati: “Hati cannot believe that such an enemy exists, but what would happen in that case?” Werner: “I would be trapped inside the barrier, and I would try to send for help to you, Hati. But…”

Hati: “Oh! If you are inside the barrier, you wouldn’t be able to even let anyone know that you are in trouble!”

Werner: “That’s right. If it was you or I, we may not fall into that situation, but for Lotte or Prince Thil, that could very much happen.”

And not only Prince Thil, but this would affect my younger sister, Lutricia, and his Imperial Highness who are not soldiers.

If they are attacked, they could use the barrier to prevent the situation from worsening.

But if they are unable to communicate with the outside world about their crisis, the crisis will continue.

By the way, I noticed the President and Head of Research because they were trying to break the barrier.

If someone touches the barrier, the barrier will slightly waver, and it can be noticed from inside.

And by combining it with another Magecraft Artifact, you can also peek outside of the barrier without being seen.

That’s why I notice when Lotte or Prince Thil comes to visit.

But even if we can see from the inside out, you cannot see from the outside in.

Werner: “I want to create a method of communicating to someone outside of the barrier from the inside.”

Hati: “I see~ That seems very difficult.”

Werner: “Yes. It is a very difficult problem. An extremely difficult, cumbersome, and tiresome problem.”

This really isn’t easy to do. I like making simpler Magecraft Artifacts.

As I groaned with thoughts racing through my head, I tilted my head left and right.

Hati: “My Lord, you seem to be having more fun than before.”

Werner: “........there’s no way that’s true.”

It was more fun to make the mass production design of the Bread Baking Magecraft Artifact.

It was like working on a puzzle.

Hati: “No, your eyes are glittering with delight, and you haven’t stopped smiling.”

Werner: “IーI see. I didn’t realize…”

Hati: “Yes, my Lord, you truly enjoy making Magecraft Artifacts~”

Werner: “Well, I don’t dislike it.”

As Hati sat on my lap, I petted her scales.

I let my thoughts drift as I did so.

What’s needed is to be able to pass information through the barrier without disrupting the barrier itself.

And on top of that, the barrier will need to continue to prohibit heat, light, sound, and impact while doing so.

This will not be easy to do.

As my concentration continued to increase, I felt someone touch the barrier.

Werner: “Hm? Do we have a visitor?” Hati: “Hati will go see!”

Werner: “Thank you.” Hati flew over and went to go look through the Magecraft Artifact that allowed her to see outside.

Werner: “That’s it!”

Hati: “What is it? Oh! It’s Lotte.”

Looks like Lotte came over to visit.
