Cars and people move in the dark streets, while Peter and I, in our costumes, are perched on one of the queens' buildings, watching from above.
We decided to have our first mission tonight, knowing that my parents will out of town for a couple of days. They went to a gaming convention, giving us the possibility to organize a pajama party, convincing May to have Peter stay with me for the night.
"So we move around the neighborhood until something happens?" Asks my friend, unsure of what to do, now that our first vigilante's night started.
Unsure of the best course of action, I propose the most general idea I can muster. "More or less, we may move around pubs and dark alleys, where is more likely that people will try something shady."
"That's all?" Peter asks, unsatisfied by the passivity of my idea.
"What? I'm new to the hero work too," I reply, a bit embarrassed by the simplicity of my plan.
"I know, but you usually have this kind of answers," he asks, having guessed my state of mind from my voice tone.
Knowing where the conversation is headed, I reiterate a conversation that we already had. "I already told you, my ability to see the future is reliable only if the event is significant."
"Every life is important," Peter replies, uncomfortable that my powers deem some events as relevant and some as not.
"True, but some are more relevant than others," I say, knowing that some people are more significant in shaping the future than others.
"Maybe you are right, but I still want to save all the people that I can," replies my companion, fully committed to doing the most good he can.
Hearing his answer a proud smile appears on my face, "As you should, we must always strive for the best option, even if we can't realize it. Now let's stop these depressing thoughts, we have a job to do."

It took us more than an hour to find someone committing a crime, maybe due to the still freezing temperatures of the night.
We found a man trying to steal a car, so, seeing him as a simple target, I decided to let Peter handle him.
To be truthful, it wasn't even a fight, as Peter simply glued his hands to the car with his webs, before taking out the robber's phone and calling the police.
I'll admit, it was a bit anticlimactic, but that's what will happen if you send a superhero against a normal man.
Deciding to keep going, we moved over Queens' rooftops, searching for other crimes to stop. Moving near an area full of pubs, we see something serious.
A group of goons was moving toward a couple of girls that have left the nearby disco, probably to return to their homes. Knowing how bad the situation may turn, we decide to move near them, ready to stop the group if they try something.
Unfortunately for everyone, we were right, and the moment the girls are near them, the group strikes, ready to throw the girls into an alley and do things better left unspoken. The moment that we see that our fears were going to turn into reality, we strike.
The pack of five that has split to catch the two girls doesn't even have to notify us before it's too late.
I jump in, dropkicking the nearest and launching him against the nearest wall. The sharp noise of broken bones stops the group, but not Peter, that arrives at that moment and trow one or the other guys on the floor, freeing one of the girls.
Before the goons have the time to take out their knife and do something like take the remaining girl as a hostage, I attack again, punching another one in the gut. I may have punched with a bit too much strength as spit flows out of the man while his eyes roll back.
Seeing how we handled their companions, the remaining two start to run, trying to get away.
Unfortunately for them, Peter has his web-shooter ready, gluing their feet to the floor and causing them to stumble.
Seeing that we have taken care of the aggressors, we decided to run away, but not before gluing the remaining ones, uncertain that they won't wake up before the police arrived.
Finally having done something important we decide to stop for the night, ready to go home and celebrate our first hero job.

When we get home, I start pondering on the night work, before asking Peter, "What do think about our first outing?"
Peter answers, with a mixture of joy and sadness, "I am happy we saved those girls, but I think you may have kicked that guy a bit too hard. I heard his bones cracking."
"He deserved it, you know what would have happened if we weren't there," I answer.
"I know Sig, but do not forget the consequences. That kick could have killed the man." Peter says, worried about the damages we could have done.
"I know, we don't want to kill or maim them. I used a bit too much strength." I say, trying to present an expression more confident than my real thoughts.
"I know, accidents may happen," Peter says with a comprehensive expression, before exploding in a joyful scream. "We finally did it, we saved someone!"
"I know, Pete," I reply, amused by his change of tone.
"We should do this every night!" Peter screams, still at the peak of his joy and adrenaline.
"I doubt we will be able to, I mean my parents and your aunt will notice if we disappear from our bed to go crime-fighting," I say, dulling his mood.
"Then we could go only when we are left alone because they have to work?" Peter asks, trying to find when we could do more hero's work.
"Probably, and maybe we could start doing a bit of hero work during the daytime, we would cover for each other," I answer, willing to offer him more possibilities to do what he wants.
"It may work..." Peter says, pondering on my words.
After a couple of minutes, I interrupt our conversation, "Well, I believe it's time to go to bed Pete, we have school tomorrow."
"That's true, I should take the inflatable mattress. Where is it?" He asks.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you, I found a little hole in the mattress," I reply, not admitting that I was the one that punctured the mattress.
"Where I will sleep then?" Peter asks, suspecting my involvement with the problem.
"You could sleep on my bed, it's big enough for two," I answer, trying to hide the joy in my voice.
"Can't I use the couch?" he asks, embarrassment creeping on his face.
"Nope, that will be bad for your health," I say, fully committed to having him sleep in my bed.
Sighing, he finally surrenders, knowing that he will not win this, "But don't do anything while I sleep, ok?"
"Who do you think I am?" I ask with a fake offended tone.
"A pervert." Peter answers.
