Chapter 53: Life In A Strange Place (Part 1)

Shera was now still resisting me a bit, she was very depressed, she wanted to go out of my hands, wanted to return to her family, I didn't know where was her parents and relatives now.

If they were lucky like us then they would have been sent somewhere but if some of them were unfortunately and got sent to this Snow border, they would die for sure.

The cold of the border, it was very cold, could be as cold as Antarctica or more than it, the sky had now stopped raining but we were all wet. 

I didn't notice that we were wet when we got into Rivia's house, maybe I should bring Shera to return there to change our clothes.

"Shera! John! Where are you two?" - I heard Rivia's voice from far away, she was shouting to find us

"We are over here, Rivia!"

Then in a few seconds, a figure of a woman could be seen running toward us, that was Rivia, she was holding her sword while running toward us.

"John! Shera! You two get inside my house now!" - Rivia shouted to us while looking around with cautious, she reminded me that the border had monsters, maybe she was scouting

"Follow me, Princess!" - I carried Shera and ran back to Rivia's house

"Cry! Cry! Cry!" - Shera was crying while pressing her face to my shirt, I felt so regretted after saying her relatives are all died, maybe I should not say that so rough

Then I ran back to Rivia's house while looking back to see Rivia, she was now running behind us while keeping her eyes around the border. 

After a few minutes of running, we had finally got back home, I ran into Rivia's house and immediately put Shera near the furnace to let her get the heat.

"Rivia! Where are the wooden logs?" - I shouted back to Rivia when she was away from her home a few steps

"The farthest door located on the left when you get in the house!" - Rivia shouted to me along the way then I did what she said

I went inside the farthest door to the left and opened it up, there were many things inside that looked to be the small wooden logs that were placed together on the right side. 

On the left side, some things looked to be brown bags that were tied by ropes, those bags seemed to be carrying something inside.

I was so worried about Shera so I put my hands on the wooden logs, after touching them, I noticed that the logs were dry, maybe they had been placed here for a long time but had no sign of rotten.

I immediately ran back to the furnace and put the logs into it, then how could I fire the furnace up? 

I looked around the furnace and saw a pair of stones that looked to be very sharp, also some grass that was placed around the stone, maybe I could fire the furnace up by using this.

"Rif!" (Fire!) - Rivia shouted a word while raising her hand to the furnace, a fire had been set up inside the furnace, maybe she had used magic

"Princess, give me your hands." - I called Shera to order her to raise her hands near the furnace to take the heat, we were now wetting because of the rain so I didn't want her to be sick

Shera looked so depressed while taking the heat from the furnace, I held her to comfort her. Shera had now stopped crying but she kept looking around as if to be very scared if she was alone here.

"You two keep heating by the furnace, I will take the clothes to let you people change." - Rivia said to us then got into another door in her house

"Hey, Princess! Are you cold?" - I ask Shera because I saw she was now shaking

"No, I just scared, my relatives are all died, they are all died!" - Shera held herself, she seemed very depressed after hearing what I said

"I'm here with you, Princess! Don't worry, I will always be here with you, don't worry."

Then both of us held each other for a few minutes, I finally took off my wet T-Shirt and put it in a place that I considered to be clean. 

Rivia's preparation was quite long, about 5 minutes had passed but we didn't see her come back.

"I will put your two clothes on this desk, it took me so long to prepare because I didn't know if the clothes fit you two or not." - That's okay, Rivia! At least we only need the clothes to change for now

"Thank you!" - I put my hands out of Shera and stepped toward the clothes that were placed on the table that was placed on the left behind the house's entrance when we got in

Those two clothes had brown-colored, they were made of leather with winter resist designs, maybe to resist the cold of the border.

"There's a bathroom over there, maybe it will be better if you two take the bath then change the clothes." - Rivia pointed her hand to a door in her house, maybe we should take the bath to let the raindrops away from our bodies

"Princess, you take the bath first." - I gave Shera the leather clothes the small size, maybe they would fit her appearance

"Thank you." - Shera slowly took the clothes from my hands and stepped toward the bathroom door

I kept heating myself by raising my hands by the furnace, then I noticed that Rivia was now walking toward Shera.

"Shera, right? I want to teach you some basic things first about bathing here, our way of bathing is very different from you humans, get inside with me and I will guide you." - Rivia told Shera to follow her into the bathroom

Both of the girls got inside and closed the door so I also kept my eyes away, must not dig too much about their privacy.

Then I kept heating by the furnace in a few minutes, my body had now dried, no sign of wet but I think it would be better if I take a bath. After a few minutes, Rivia had finally come out of the bathroom, maybe Shera was now bathing inside after hearing the guides from Rivia.

I looked at the crystal light that glowed blue light up the roof, it was very bright, the outside had finally ended raining so Rivia went toward a wall next to the curtain that was covering the room inside. 

At this time I noticed that the wall next to the curtain had a handbrake or something, it was now in the up direction, Rivia pulled the handbrake down.

Suddenly that crystal light had turned off and returned to a crystal that had a dark blue, the original color of the crystal when it didn't light. 

I looked around the house, it was not so dark because there were windows that were placed around so the house was now still very bright, maybe Rivia had turned on the light when it was raining.

Maybe I should ask Rivia how to use this fantasy world's technology though their technology was actually based on our world's technology.

"Hey Rivia, may I ask? How can I use that thing?"

"Oh, this electricity? It's simple, look." - Rivia pulled out a thing that looked to be a piece of a stone wall that covered the things inside it, the piece was placed below the handbrake

I saw that inside the hidden wall was a small box or something like that, Rivia pulled out the box and turned it around for me to see. 

I saw that the box had a line of a hand opened wide behind it and a kind of number that was written in pictographs words that I cannot read in front of the box.

"This is called electricity box, the number that is shown before you are the date until this thing fully used up, it's written in our language, three months left, I think." - Rivia explained to me this fantasy electricity

"If we used up the electricity, is there any way to replace it?"

"I still have ten more boxes like this one in the storeroom, each box can provide electricity for one year, if you used up all of the boxes, you can recharge them by using magic." - What? That fantasy thing was possible?

"How?"

Then Rivia put down the electricity box on the dinner table, she pointed her hand to the line that drew a hand behind the box.

"Put your hand in that hand line and converse your magic power into the box." - What? But I cannot use magic then how I could?

"Why did your face look so confused? You can't use magic? Don't worry, magic is very hard to learn, you cannot cast magic even if you read books about the way to cast it."

"We cannot use magic if we don't cast them according to the books but there are many of us who cannot use them even if we read books about it." 

"If I don't remember wrong, the humans call the people who can't cast magic are powerless but most of the humans cannot use magic even if they read many books about many magics though their magic powers are capable to use."

"You humans are very odd, you people racist the people who can't cast magic though most of you cannot cast it." - Maybe I have some answer after Rivia's explanation 

I have understood why the kids that I cooperated with within the goblin hunt quest and the Adventurers that I killed with Mentor Lerer used very less of magic or never used it. 

Because they cannot cast magic though their magic powers were capable to use it, that meant I have worried about redundant things, but having magic was still a bit convenient to me.

"I have done bathing, Sir Rigen. Why don't you come in?" - Shera seemed to be cleaned, I heard her footsteps were now walking toward me

I looked back to see Shera, the clothes she was wearing quite fit her appearance, her body looked so pretty when she was wearing that leather clothes.

Gulp! Dammit! I must get my eyes away from Shera, her body made me turn on a bit, I lowered my head to avoid looking at Shera while reaching my hand to the leather clothes.

"Ah, Shera! Let me teach you to use this thing, come here!" - Rivia called Shera to get to the black electricity box, maybe she wanted Shera about the recharge process

Then I slowly stepped toward the bathroom, when I was opening the door, I heard a voice.

"John, let me go with you inside to teach you a bit ways of bathing." - Rivia! Maybe you should let me do that myself!

"I will do that myself, I will find out it myself so don't care about me."

"Alright, if you say so, but get back here to me if you see you are struggling with using the bath." - Okay, Rivia!

"Sir Rigen!" - Shera called me, she wanted to say something  

"Can you please let me sun-dried your clothes and my clothes outside, Sir Rigen? I see that outside is now bright." - Though the rain has ended recently, maybe I should obey Shera, I don't want her to feel useless, must coddle her

"Yeah, thank you, Princess!"

"Rivia, does your house have somewhere for the sun-dried, I will let you teach me later."

"Ah, follow me, Shera! This way." - Rivia called Shera to go with her outside

Then I went into the bathroom and saw there was a wooden bucket inside the room with a long thing that looked to be a faucet that was placed near there.

There were two buttons on the faucet, one had blue and the other had red, also forward the faucet for a few steps had a thing that placed from above looked to be a shower also had the features like the faucet.

I pushed the button that had red-colored on the shower, the water slowly flew out of the shower's head.

The man Frank Jonathan must have affected the technology of this world quite much.

That was hot water, I felt that was so hot so I pushed the red button again and then noticed that I could pull the button. I pulled the button with the red color a bit exposed out of the shower, the water started warmer.

So I could adjust the level of these buttons, I pushed the blue button and then enjoyed the cold water line.

After I have done showering, I noticed that I didn't have a towel to clean my body! So I went toward the door.

"Knock! Knock! Princess! Rivia! Please get me the towel, I don't have it to clean my body."

After a few after I made the knocks on the door, a hand opened the door and exposed the towel to the door, that hand must be from Rivia.

"John, your Princess is now sleeping, don't disturb her." - Oh! I forgot that Shera must be tired or she was very missing her relatives so she had slept to calm her nerve

Then I took the towel and started cleaning all of my body, after cleaning with the towel, I changed my clothes. 

The leather clothes were quite cramped to my body, maybe my upper side was very big and wide so it didn't fit.

But I managed to wear the leather clothes and stepped outside, when I got out, Rivia was there, staring at me with a very surprised face.

"Oh my! I've sewed the clothes for my late father when he was still a border knight, he died before he could wear these clothes."

"But look at you, John! My father was very muscular but you are more muscular than him." - maybe I have made Rivia shocked 

"Rivia, do you mind if I wear the clothes, you said that was the gift for your late father?"

"No, just wear it freely, I don't know if there is still anyone fit with my father's clothes." - Oh, okay!

"Where is Shera, I mean Princess? I didn't see her." 

Then Rivia opened the yellow curtain out, Shera was now sleeping on a bed, that curtain could be considered as a hidden entrance to the bedroom. The bed looked to be fit for two people, above the bedroom's roof also had a crystal, that thing had now turned off.

"Hey, John! About the electricity, I will teach you later so can you please follow me now?" - Rivia seemed a bit hurry

"Where we will go?"

"I will do the patrol around the border now, I will lead you to the weapons and equipment room, follow me." - Wait! What about Shera? How would she react if she woke but didn't see me and you?

"Wait, what about Shera?"

"Ah, I forgot, I always do the patrol until night comes, that's the time I go home and prepare dinner, food stocks are placed next to the wooden logs, maybe I will ask Shera to cook for us when we return." 

"But Shera is a Princess, does she know how to cook?"

"Don't know, but at least having something to fill your stomach is enough for me, maybe that Princess will be fine, John. Let me take you a paper to write for her what you want her to do." - Was that plan logic, Rivia?

Then Rivia started searching around the desks in the bedroom, she finally pulled out a piece of paper that looked to be made like our world's paper and gave it to me, she also gave me a pen and a small ink box.

"What do you want to write? Write it." - Rivia told me to do it fast and went outside of the bedroom 

Then I wrote to Shera that we would be okay, I and Rivia would go outside for a bit and would return soon. 

I also wrote to Shera that the food stocks were placed in the room that had wooden logs so she could take the food there to make the meals.

After I have done writing, I put the paper down on a table near Shera's reach and slowly went out of the bedroom, I didn't want to disturb her sleep.

"You're done? Good! Follow me." - Rivia told me to go with her

Then we went inside a room that looked to be stocked with weapons and armors, I saw that there were many weapons placed on the shelves and armors placed on the tables next to each other.

"Choose anything you like, some of the weapons and armors are a bit rusted but they are still good to use." - What, Rivia? You people didn't use the Keep magic?

"You dark elves don't use the Keep magic?"

"Keep magic? My late mother told me that magic belongs to the White elves, we don't want to violate the other's magic that's written in the Peace Agreement 500 years ago, we don't steal their magic to make our benefits." - Oh, okay!

Then I looked around, I saw that the armors had some made of iron, some made of leather that was dyed in black color. I saw that Rivia only wore hand protectors and leg protectors on her armor, the rest she wore her pink leather clothes.

"Rivia, why don't you equip your armor more?"

"Ah, the monsters around the border don't appear much and they don't smart, quite easy to take out so I don't need to equip that much to slow me down." - Maybe I should equip like Rivia

Then I chose a pair of black forearm protectors and wore them, I also chose the blackleg protectors but I also wore two black plates to protect my shoulders, I didn't know if I have prepared too much caution.

"Look like you have done choosing your armor, why don't you look around the weapons?" - Rivia told me

Then I looked around the weapons, they were shields, axes, spears and swords, short swords and long swords, maybe I should ask Rivia for more details.

"Hey, Rivia! What kind of monster you are always facing?"

"About that, most of the monsters I always face look like orcs or have wings to fly like the demons but as I said, they are not smart and easy to take down, I suggest you choose a long sword."

I looked around for a bit then I took a longsword that looked to be in the good shape. 

I also wore an iron shield behind my back in case I got attacked from behind then I would be protected by the shield.

"Good, let's go, I will introduce you to Fafa, follow me." - Who was Fafa?

Then I went with Rivia out of her house, we went behind the house, maybe it was the house's back yard or something. 

When I got there, I saw many graves were placed next to each other on the ground, looked to be placed for centuries, some of the graves even had mosses.

"These graves are my parent's and very late great-grandparents graves, my generation has the tradition of doing the border knight."

"My very late great-grandparents, my late grandparents, my father, my mother, my brothers and sisters are all passed away."

"Now this is only me here all alone, maybe I will return to the Capital city in somedays to suggest Her Majesty to choose me a good warrior as my breeder to let me have a successor."

"After bearing my offspring, I will return to guard the border, the child will be raised by Her Majesty until I retire, that child will take my place." - Seemed like Rivia's generations tradition was quite complicated to me

Then Rivia kneeled on the ground and chanted her hands together as if to pray for something. After that, she stood up and told me to follow her to a place that looked to be a horse keep house.

"Ah, Fafa! Are you hungry, maybe you're not, you just have eaten all of the bowls here!" - So the name Fafa that Rivia mentioned to me was her horse

"John, before you go with me, can you swing your sword to a wooden scarecrow over there? Just need to swing it normally, I want to know how experienced you are with a sword." - Rivia told me to attack the scarecrow

I saw that the wooden scarecrow was placed next to the horse keep house, the scarecrow itself looked to have many scratches. Some parts had been torn apart, which was caused by weapons while practicing.

Then I walked a bit far from the scarecrow, I held tight my sword, raised it above then ran toward it to make a strike. My sword hit the scarecrow's right shoulder, it had been torn out very badly by my sword.

"Oh my!" - Rivia seemed very shocked at my sword attack so she ran to the scarecrow to look at its injury

Rivia looked at the scarecrow closely then got her face out and looked at me.

"You put quite much of your strength to the sword on that strike, your sword stance is not stable but you made the strike quite accurately."

"That's enough for now, John, I will ride Fafa, you stay behind me to guard."

Then I went with Rivia toward her horse Fafa, when I was about to touch it, it suddenly shook its head as if to reject me.

"Haha! Don't worry, Fafa, I will make sure to you this man is safe to you." - Rivia cuddled Fafa and mounted on her horse

"You up too, John! Don't worry, Rivia is very good, it won't bite." - Yeah! I don't expect this horse to feel free enough to bite me, a horse that bit you was a horse that had problems, dogs were fine!

Then I got into Rivia's horse and went with her out of the house to go around the border.

Shera's perspective

I remembered that after I brought Sir Rigen's clothes and my clothes outside for the sun-dried, I felt a bit sleepy so I begged Rivia to let me sleep. 

I remembered that Rivia has brought me to her bedroom and then I slept to calm myself down. 

My father, my brother and also Reimi, my closest guard have now gone away, I only have Sir Rigen as my closest relative and also my loved one.

I have woken up after being asleep, I felt so much better now, I have calmed down a bit, maybe it would not be too late for me until I and Sir Rigen could find the way to return to my homeland. 

I looked around the room, I saw myself inside Rivia's bedroom, I was now wondering where was Sir Rigen and her.

I slowly got up, got myself out of the bed and went toward the curtain to slide it aside, then I went out of the curtain to the main room of Rivia's house.

I looked around but didn't see Sir Rigen or her anywhere.

"Sir Rigen! Rivia! Where are you two?" - I made a shouted to call them but I didn't hear any response

Weird? I also stared at the other doors of Rivia's house for a few seconds but saw that no one opened them after my voice was made. 

Sir Rigen and Rivia were now away from home? What should I do? Why did they leave me?

What should I do now? They left me because I'm so useless? I'm so useless!!!! I'm so useless!!!

I didn't know where I should go to search for Sir Rigen and Rivia now, maybe they have left me a message or something like that when they left the house.

I went inside the bedroom to see if there were anything I could find, then I saw a piece of paper was that placed at the table near the bed.

I took the paper and looked at the details that were written on it, it was written by Sir Rigen, maybe he wanted to remind me something.
