Chapter 2.
Threshold Crossing
》"Finish it."
Kara says, handing the knife to Sune. She heads towards the door, one of her hands is close to the spear she was fishing with, the other on the door handle. Finally, she opens it.
-"Hey, I came for the bandage swap."
A middle-aged man says, Al, a friendly merchant, not so tall nor well dressed. Kara steps to the side, holding the door. Al walks in and takes a seat. Kara closes the door.
>"Al! Look, my first catch"
Sune says excitedly. Al can't help but smile.
-"Great job, buddy!"
Kara approaches. Al lifts his shirt, which reveals a wound to the side of his belly covered by a bandage. Kara removes the bandage. Sune approaches.
>"Al, how do you end up getting hurt so often?"
》"I told you to skin the fish."
Kara says while placing the new bandage on the wound.
>"I know, but you've been trying to teach me new things, right? Watching you bandaging Al can help me learn."
-"Aye, he has a good point."
Al adds. Kara doesn't respond and finishes the bandaging, leaving the roll of bandages on the table.
》"You should be fine by now, but keep these bandages just in case."
Sune fist-bumps Al before making his way back to the table and continuing to skin the fish.
-"Thanks, Kara. I appreciate it."
Al says while standing.
"You know, you should leave this place more. There is a whole city nearby. You can't live the rest of your life being the witch of the woods. If not for you, do it for him."
Kara looks back at Sune who seems to be struggling a bit with removing the skin from the fish.
-"If you decide to leave for a while… I know a place you can stay and I have a few things you might like to check out in my store…"
Kara doesn't respond. She seems to think about the proposal though.
"Anyways I should get going. Thank you again."
Al makes his way to the door. Kara follows after, opening the door for him.
-"Bye Sune."
Al says, waving goodbye to Sune who waves back. Kara closes the door once he's left and turns, noticing Al forgot to take the bandages. Kara then heads towards Sune and takes his hand, tilting it a bit and doing a slicing movement.
》"Like this, against the blade of the knife."
She teaches… Another knock on the door can be heard. Kara looks at the bandages again and assumes it must be Al. She heads back towards the door, picking up the bandages on the way.
Just before Kara opens the door, with her hand on the door handle, she reaches for the spear with her free hand. Once opening the door a sword came towards her which she deflected the stab with the spear. She drops the bandages and steps back as a woman with lacking armor and wings walks in, her wings are golden, the feathers are metal-like and sharp as blades.
The Woman grabs Kara by the neck, lifting her from the floor and slamming her hard against the wall. Kara lifts the spear but one of the wings slaps it from Kara's hand. Kara holds the woman's arm that is choking her.
>>"Stop fighting and save me some time, will you?"
The woman says, one of her wings moves back as if she were about to stab Kara with those sharp feather tips, although just before she can a knife comes flying on and stabs the woman on the shoulder. The woman screams in pain, taking her attention away from Kara to stare at Sune, who tossed the knife at her.

>>"What… is… is that why you retired?"
The Woman says. Kara then takes the knife from the woman's shoulder and stabs the woman in the arm that is choking Kara, forcing the woman to scream and then turn around to toss Kara out through the open door. The woman makes her way out after Kara.
》"What do you want?"
Kara asks panting.
>>"Your death, precisely."
Kara stands. The woman pulls the knife out of her arm and tosses it on the floor. The woman points the sword at Kara who charges. The woman swings, although Kara dodges, picking up the knife from the floor and now standing in between the woman and the house. Sune peeks out the door.
》"Last chance. Leave. My. House."
>>"Try me."
The woman charges to attack Kara who dodges the attack once again, giving the woman a light cut on the side, making her grunt and reach for the wound. Kara attacks fast now, giving the woman multiple jabs with the knife. Some she deflects with the sword and some with her hand. Kara manages to remove the sword from the woman's hand, forcing her to use her wings as shields.
Finally, one of the jabs hit. Kara stabs her in the abdomen. The woman attacks with her wing. Kara let go of the knife to hold the top part of the wing, just a few inches from stabbing her as well.
It's not enough, the feathers start to pierce into her skin. She grunts while she tries to push the wing away. Kara looks down at the woman and kicks one of her knees, making her fall and forcing her to pull the wing away, saving Kara from a deeper wound. Kara screams and punches the woman in the face, making her fall and roll over.
Kara steps back, panting still. Blood dripped down her clothes. The woman stands, stretching her wings wide. She flies towards Kara, grabbing her by the head and slamming her onto the floor before giving her a kick to the stomach. Kara rolls, standing up quickly just to take another kick to the face.
Kara holds herself onto a tree, dodging the punch that comes towards her and grabbing the next, returning with a head-to-head attack, forcing the woman to take a few steps back. Kara lifts her guard while approaching.
The golden wing comes at her with a stabbing motion which she dodges. Taking the opportunity, Kara punches the woman several times and quickly, making her disoriented until landing one last punch on the knife wound on the woman's belly.
The woman loses her breath and almost falls back. She coughs up blood while slowly looking up at Kara who still has her guard up.
》"Surrender now and you might still maintain some honour for yourself."
>>"There's no honour in giving up."
The woman picks up her sword from the ground and screams a war cry, charging with the last of her strengths for the battle.
Once close enough Kara grabs the woman's wrist and turns the sword's direction towards the woman, making her stab herself. Her wings go forward, almost hugging Kara, who reaches her hand for the back of the woman's head which slowly rests on Kara's shoulder.
Kara slowly lays the woman down on the grass, staying on her knees by her. A few moments later, Sune approaches.
>"You just… killed a valkyrie."
Kara doesn't look at Sune. She keeps staring at the dead valkyrie.
》"Pack your things. We have to leave."
Kara says, still kneeling by the dead valkyrie that laid dead with her wings spread. Sune leaves towards the house. Kara stands, pulling the sword out of the valkyrie's body slowly and carefully.
Kara fiddles with the wings, taking a few of those feathers away as well as the sheath of the sword, which she puts the sword into. Sune returns.
>"I'm ready."
》"Go get the horse then."
Kara makes her way into the hut to grab her things while Sune makes his way to the fence gate. He grabs the horse by the lead and takes him out through the gateway.
Kara returns and puts the saddle on the horse. She then reaches for Sune's shoulder and hands out the sword she took from the valkyrie.
>"The valkyrie's sword?"
》"She no longer has a use for it."
>"Wow… I… are you sure?"
》"It is yours now."
Sune smiles at the gift and happily takes the sword. He unsheaths it. It's as sharp as the valkyrie's feathers. It's silver made and has runes going from tip to handle. He holds it with both hands, appreciating it while Kara mounts the horse. Kara then reaches her hand for Sune to jump up. Sune sheaths the sword back and takes Kara's hand. He mounts the horse and straps the sheath with the sword on his hip.
>"So where to?"
》"The city."
