Acting Spoiled In His Indifferent Arms 02: Hot Pot Restaurant

bibz  Novel Translation  July 22, 2020 8 Minutes

The film set was set up in the school’s largest lecture hall; there were hundreds of seats that were all fully occupied by students, and the front row was occupied by some of the city’s politicians.

During the course of the interview, Ji Fei Fei tearfully told the story of her battle against her disease.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to stay strong. Whenever I feel like I want to give up, I can’t help but think of my friends and family. And when I remember that there are so many children in this world that are suffering from illnesses, I can then find the courage to not give up hope and continue living! I have to set an example for them!

There was a thunderous applause from the audience, and in the live broadcast, netizens were cheering for Ji Fei Fei.

“Let me comfort you, Fei Fei!”

“Fei Bao*, don’t cry, Mommy loves you!”

Ji Bai stood behind the stage’s side curtain, watching Fei Fei expressionlessly.

In this world, there were countless people suffering from hemophilia, but it just had to be Ji Fei Fei who could become a famous influencer with millions of followers.

It wasn’t just because she was young, but because she knew how to market herself. Fei Fei would often create content on TikTok, singing and dancing to depict her sunny and positive personality.

Ji Bai silently reached for her phone, and took a shot of her sister’s live interview.

At that moment, the broadcast company’s employees beckoned to Ji Bai.

“Come touch up your makeup, you’re up next!”

Several makeup artists armed with powder puffs began to pat her face messily.

“Next up, we have invited Ji Fei Fei’s dear sister to come on stage. Let’s hear what her younger sister thinks about Fei Fei’s struggle with hemophilia,” the interviewer said.

Ji Bai was pushed onto the brightly lit stage, and was momentarily blinded by the lights. She couldn’t help but block the offending rays with her hand.

The interviewer guided her to sit beside Ji Fei Fei.

She was the complete opposite of the composed and smiling Ji Fei Fei on stage. Ji Bai suddenly felt at a loss in the spotlight, and under the gaze of hundreds of people, she began to nervously hyperventilate. To others, she looked awkward but slightly cute.

In a casual tone, the interviewer asked Ji Bai, “I heard you donate blood for your sister?”

Ji Bai hadn’t opened her mouth yet when Ji Fei Fei immediately took control of the narrative: “That’s right, it’s only once or twice, but everytime Bai Bai will make a huge fuss and cry like a little child.”

“Wow, it looks like the little sister hasn’t grown up yet. Unexpectedly, she still throws tantrums. Then, did Ji Bai willingly donate blood to her sister?”

It finally came down to this question.

In the last life, Ji Bai would blurt out her honest opinions and say no, she was not willing. Then she would proceed to get attacked by countless netizens, saying she was cold-blooded and ruthless, and wasn’t worthy of being Ji Fei Fei’s younger sister.

Even her classmates at school all cooperated together to isolate her.

Ji Bai gazed at her sister’s tear eyes and said——

“No, I don’t donate blood to her willingly.”

As expected, there was an uproar in the audience, and her classmates began to discuss in whispers. Meanwhile, her parents who were sitting in the front row frantically gestured at her to explain herself properly.

“I don’t want to donate blood to her because the process is very painful, and every time I donate blood, I always feel dizzy afterwards. Sometimes it’s a whole afternoon, sometimes it’s the entire night. And the next day I’ll always feel listless.”

In the left corner of the lecture hall, Xie Sui was dozing off in his chair. He was dragged to this interview by the class teacher.

The original intention of the teacher was to bring this group of delinquents to the interview to teach them a lesson. But while Ji Fei Fei was detailing her emotional experience with illness and pain, they were not moved at all, and instead were playing games and taking naps.

Coincidentally, when Ji Bai began to speak, Xie Sui happened to rouse.  He opened his eyes slightly, and his gaze fell upon her.

Her facial features were sharp and her skin was like fresh snow. It made him think of innocent forest animals, but he noticed that her pitch-black pupils had a faint sharpness to them.

He gradually felt more alert, and continued to stare at her.

Ji Bai continued to speak “If I could, I would suffer through my sister’s illness for her. I think I would do my best to face my fate head on, and strive to overcome it.

Ji Fei Fei pouted.

“If you gaze too long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you; when you fight with monsters, you should be careful to not become a monster yourself. I hope that everything will be overcome, and that my sister will become a better person.”

The city leaders off stage nodded their heads, and observed Ji Bai with approval.

Her classmates whispered amongst themselves——

“Even though I don’t really understand, it sounds like it makes a lot of sense.”

“Ji Bai is usually so quiet, but it looks like she’s actually not that dumb”

Listening to Ji Bai speak, Ji Fei Fei, her expression slowly sank.

The interview spoke: “Ji Bai seems to be a very kind-hearted girl, she’d rather endure her sister’s pain for her. I just think that if these sisters work as one, they certainly can overcome this disease. Speaking of which, since Ji Bai is Ji Fei Fei’s most loyal supporter, why does she rarely make public appearances?”

Ji Fei Fei noticed that the situation wasn’t right, and quickly interjected.

“My sister’s personality is more introverted. She’s not very talkative, so to even get her on this stage was a lot of effort. So let’s not embarrass her any further.. Oh yes, I want to share a new inspirational story I have…”

Shei successfully stole the spotlight, and the stage workers proceeded to escort Ji Bai off stage.

Although her time on stage was not long, she had a long future ahead of her. Ji Bai wasn’t impatient.

She felt for her phone, and opened her sister’s WeChat. Her latest status update was a selfie backstage.

In this photo, she had a pouty smile, and because she had put makeup on, she looked particularly beautiful.”

The caption read: “About to go on stage, I’m a bit nervous. Everyone, please cheer me on, love you all!”

The comment section underneath was filled with flattery——

> I really love your cheerfulness and optimism.

> Fei Fei is so cute.

> Good luck, Fei Fei! We’re here to back you up!

Ji Bai continued to scroll down the comments. Underneath the popular ones, there were several inconspicuous remarks.

> If you gaze too long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into you; I have this feeling that Ji Fei Fei’s sister has some sort of hidden meeting in her words.”

> OP thinks too much.”

> I dunno, maybe it is me reading into it too much, but I don’t think it’s that simple.”

> Shrug.

……

In the evening, her close friends made a fuss about celebrating Ji Bai’s first time on stage.

Her girlfriends all wore white dresses, giving off a youthful and innocent image. But Ji Bai knew that once they started eating hotpot, their sleeves would be rolled up, and they’d be in tears from the spiciness.

In a group, they headed from the school campus to the most popular hotpot store.

They seemed to have arrived late, because the hotpot store was already packed, and there were no more available seats..

This store’s hotpot was particularly tasty, and it was difficult to find a similar options, so the girls felt a bit disappointed.

At this moment, Yin Xia Xia used her hand to nudge JI Bai, and whispered: “Xie Sui is sitting at the table near the window.”

Ji Bai looked up and saw him.

He was wearing a thin and black crewneck sweater, and was holding his sleeves while pouring himself a bit of sesame oil, revealing a slender and white forearm.

His left hand was adorned with a silver ring that was designed in the shape of a leaf. Xie Sui’s personality was very rough, but he would often wear delicate accessories.

For example, his earrings and keychain were all of a unique taste that were slightly playful.

Xie Sui had a particular fondness towards delicate objects, but at the same time was very picky.

In short, he was a moody and erratic boy who was difficult to get along with.

A few of his friends noticed Ji Bai.

“Isn’t she one of the girls from the interview today?

“Wow! I thought you were playing with your phone and not paying attention. How do you remember?”

“I’d be blind not to notice a beauty. She’s so pretty, of course I remember.”

The boys were discussing amongst themselves, so of course the girls were also doing the same.

Both groups were unreserved teenagers, and didn’t feel embarrassed at all.

Cong Yu Zhou, who was sitting next to Xie Sui, piped up: “Do you want to come sit with us? There are no more seats.”

On a day to day basis at school, the girls were not scared of them. But in this situation, they felt the need to seek counsel. They huddled in a circle, squawking like pigeons, while discussing the situation.

“What do we do? They invited us!”

“We can’t sit with them! They’re delinquents that get into fights! I’m… I’m scared.”

“But if we don’t give them face, do you think they’ll beat us up?”

Xie Sui had slowly finished mixing his garlic sauce, and glanced at the girls nearby.

In the midst, his eyes landed on Ji Bai; she was wearing a formal white shirt that had a high collar that was fastened tightly, highlighting her slender white neck.

Her skin was particularly fair, fair to the point that it would redden with a light pinch. The shirt she wore was very thin, and because her sweat had soaked through, her skin was visible through the transparent material.

Ji Bai lowered her head, very obviously trying to avoid his gaze. It wasn’t that she was embarrassed, but more like she was deliberately trying to escape.

This caught Xie Sui’s attention.

Xie Sui asked lightly, “Classmates, are you not giving us face?”

Ji Bai felt that there was a dangerous aura emanating from his light coffee-coloured pupils, and she said softly, “No… that’s not it.”

“Then take a seat.”

She was sure that this phrase was not a suggestion, but an order.

As usual, he was ambitious, obstinate, domineering, and selfish. Nobody dared to question him.

Seeing that the girls were frightened to tears, Cong Yu Zhou smiled and eased the tense atmosphere: “Sisters, we’re all from the same school. Come sit and stop dawdling. We’re eating hotpot, we’re not going to be eating you. What are you scared of?”

“They are… afraid of being beaten,” Ji Bai said quietly.

Hearing this, the girls behind her wanted to kick her ass. What did she eat growing up to be this honest?! This time they really were going to get beat up!

Xie Sui looked back at his brothers who were waiting expectedly, moved his neck slightly, and spoke.

“Come sit. Don’t make me say it twice.”

Even though the corners of his eyes were crinkled from smiling, his voice was extremely cold.
