The expected results screen came to greet him but a mere moment later.
‘Results’
‘1st place: H.A.R.U.T.O.’
‘2nd place: S.I.X.S.H.O.T.’
‘New achievement: Sore play!’
‘New achievement: Assault and battery!’
‘New achievement: Domestic terrorist!’
‘New achievement: Car abuser X3!’
His level had been raised to 18, and Suzuka’s had gone past 32.
Aside from the usual stat raises he couldn’t really get a good read on, there were also two notifications signaling ‘rank change’ was available for the two of them.
It certainly seemed interesting, but he’d rather deal with it later than waste time with little details at a time like this.
‘Added credits: +80,000’
‘Total credits: 193,900’
He glanced back to the tower’s entrance. The minivan had stopped just short of the floor’s center, but the owner hadn’t come out.
Outside, where he currently stood, the festival of balloons and lights went on, though he could tell the citizens in this particular area were considerably more wary of both him and the glass building itself. In the distance, however, past one or two blocks, he could tell it all went on as usual for everyone from the loud shouts and banging noises alone. He figured they were probably used to this sort of thing already, it being a world with racing as its primary purpose and whatnot. At some point, most retirees would simply stop giving a fig about any of it.
As the boy mused, easing up against the side of the Midnight Gale as the race had come to a close, the minivan shattered into a million pieces, disappearing from his sight, and right before him the defeated gangster was brought on outside, unable to move from the place where he now stood. He seemed eager to speak, but no words came out. Perhaps, it was the shock, or maybe something else. It wasn’t like the man was wounded anymore, but losing in such a manner would likely render anyone into a hopeless spiral.
In a flash of light, Suzuka respawned behind him, holding her head in both hands while groaning about something or other. He couldn’t blame her, after seeing the mid-section of the building be lit up the way it had.
“Oweee… Did we win, master?”
“Yeah. I think Now, I guess it’s time to…”
“Choose now, grasshopper. The fate of Pietro Peleniv lies in your hands.”
“Uhhh… What the system said.” he shrugged.
He went over the two options, as was habitual.
‘Liquidate Soul.’
‘+40 000 credits.’
‘Convert to Servant.’
‘-70 000 credits.’
Behind the man, his four servants soon took form as well, staring around in bewilderment for a moment before regaining their bearings on the current situation.
“Big bro!!” Akane was the first one to snap back to the present time. “You did it!”
She waved keenly at him, attempting to skip past Sixshot and towards the victor. However, she was only able to take two steps before the system drew her back, keeping her in place as well.
“Dang it…” she grunted, with a whiny-looking pout.
“Endure it for a bit.” shrugged Haruto. “These things take a while.”
The other three women simply looked around idly, not seeming to take any particular interest in whatever happened around them.
The boy glanced back to the man in the suit, who simply gritted his teeth in defiance, his voice weak as it finally made its way out of his throat.
“It wasn’t supposed to be this way… You damn lunatic…”
Haruto clicked his tongue, unable to keep the frustration in.
“Hey, hey. Don’t you turn this on me, errand guy. I’m just trying to live my new life here. But you… You people just won’t stop getting in my way.”
He felt like punching that guy, even now. It wasn’t that any particular thing he had done had irked him to the core, or anything. When it came to mere misdeeds, it didn’t go any deeper than the boy simply disagreeing with that man’s desires, and thus fighting to stop him from achieving them.
Where his own heart, specifically, was concerned, he simply didn’t like people like him. He couldn’t say why, or what exactly made him dislike someone like this. All it boiled down to was ‘I don’t like this person. It ticks me off just looking at them.’.
Sixshot went on, nevertheless.
“This isn’t over, grasshopper. It’s never over, when you challenge the Godfather. More of us will come. Like all before you, you will fall!”

“You see?” he spat back. “This is exactly what I’m talking about. You just won’t give up. You’ll even make hostages out of random people, now? Yet, somehow, I am the lunatic. But, you know what? That’s fair. I’ll keep waiting for the rest of your friends to show up. I’ll fight off as many of you as I have to, so it’s about time you start learning some basic human courtesy.”
(Ah… So that was it… Yeah… It really was that simple.)
With his mind cleared up, he brought his finger to the first option, gladly accepting his extra prize money.
“Please, Haruto! Ha… Master! I know more about this place than you could ever believe! You can use my servants. They’ll do whatever you want, please!!” he pleaded, falling to his knees. “I just wanted to help you, you need me!!”
“As I once told someone before you, I know you would have done the exact same, had you been the one holding the knife. Sleep well.”
“No, please, nooo–!!!”
The might of the Cyberway then came down on the pitiful man, undefiable, and consumed him whole, leaving not a spec of dust behind.
“Four servants have been released.”
“And… Here's my payment.” frowned Haruto, seeing the ‘193.900’ credits increase to ‘233,900’. Exchanging people for numbers on a screen would never cease to be weird for him, although he knew it to be necessary.
But a mere moment after, the blue-haired girl had rushed him headfirst without mercy, knocking him down to the cracked asphalt as Suzuka was just barely able to dodge out of the way.
“You did it, big bro!! You’re the best! I always knew you were going to save me…!” she shouted, arms wrapped tight around his neck and fiercely rubbing her head against him as he, in vain, weakly attempted to shove her off.
“Gah… I… get it… Stop… choking me, already!!!”
A moment or so in, she had realized it and relented, apologizing profusely as her sprung back up, struggling to pull him along to his feet.
“Well, whatever… What matters is that this whole mess is dealt with, and…”
He stopped himself, noticing the three other surviving servants were looking at him, though he wasn’t sure he could accurately tell what was on their minds. One of them had a heavy grimace over her face, each crease and wrinkle notably showing. The other two seemed indifferent, looking to the side, and occasionally back to him and Suzuka, puffing thick whiffs of air out of their mouths.
(I don’t really get it, but it’s getting kinda irritating…)
“What’re ya looking at!?” he demanded. “If you don’t have any more business with us, then get lost!”
Their expressions all simultaneously changed to something else. He couldn’t accurately tell what it was, but it almost seemed as though they were copying each other. Whether it was indignance, relief, or simple indifference, he didn’t really have much left in him to waste trying to figure them out. There were, as always, more pressing matters to attend to. And finally catching on to his words, the Courtneys reacted accordingly, scattering off to who knew where, vanishing far in the distance as he turned to the other two girls in relief.
“That was unexpected, master…” muttered Suzuka. “I thought you would’ve wanted to ask them about something or other.”
“Well, they could’ve answered whatever they wanted to whatever I asked. Even if they told me the truth, it wouldn’t change what we have to do. We already know what Pizza is after, anyway. We don’t have any more time to waste.”
“Yeah… I mean, I get that they’d consider some millions of credits important, but… Why are they being so persistent? I’ve never seen his troops acting like this on any other occasion.”
Clearing her throat, Akane spoke up.
“I think I might know what’s up with them.”
Haruto turned back towards her, shoulders jerking. That was right. He’d been so caught up in the adrenaline of the situation he hadn’t even taken the time to consider Akane’s relationship with them.
“I wasn’t with the eastern army for very long, so to say I’m that sure of it would be lying… I only spent enough time in the Godfather’s ranks that I could be entrusted with their persecution lineup and figure out your location through there. But from what I’ve heard while I was staying at the capital, they seemed very adamant about retrieving the building components ‘Hellfire’ stole.”
The redhead’s eyes widened in shock.
“What!? You mean those random pieces of scrap I took? What’s so important about them? It just looked like regular, replaceable waste to me. Even if they were guarding it pretty tightly… I only did that because I figured there was nothing to lose for it, and I was already taking so many risks to begin with… but… I don’t get why they’d be so obsessed with expendable litter like that… I figured I could use it to repair my bike in some emergency, if it really got down to it, but…”
“But,” Haruto went on. “if they’re so obsessed with it, that means that extra ‘litter’ you took, as you call it, can’t be nearly as expendable as you thought it was.”
“That’s obvious…” she nodded.
“In any case, our best chance of getting any answers would be to track down the stuff you stole right away, before those lunatics figure it out on their own. So, let’s get going. The faster we reach your hiding place, the best.”
“Agreed. If we leave soon, I’m sure the two of us can… Well…”
Suzuka turned to Akane, unsure of how to word herself. She gave the boy a glance, as if to ask ‘What do we do with her now?’. And that plunged him back into deep thought.
It still scared him, the thought of having her around. She was so hard to figure out…
Still, she had done her best to find him. She had given her own life for his own…
Looking towards him as well, Akane seemed apprehensive, all of a sudden.
“W-Well, I know it might be asking too much…” she mumbled, unable to keep her gaze on him for more than a second at a time. “I know I’ve caused more than enough trouble for you already, but…”
He could feel the shame from where he stood. But still, she went on to say what she had wanted to say to him, nevertheless.
“Do you think I could go with you, big bro…?”
