They then went for the upper half of the weapon, and, this time, each of them picked up a set of pieces separately, working with both hands to each rebuild a separate portion on their own. Now that Haruto had gotten the hang of the crafting platform’s basic functions, it would be best for the two to take advantage of the shared service and save time by each working on something separately.
With the final piece on the back of the hand properly connected, before long, the liquid spear had been completely rebuilt, hovering before them with just the faintest glint of polish to it.
“You think this will hold fine?”
“Come on, big bro! I already told you it would be fine. Try it out!”
She didn’t have to tell him twice.
They closed up all the menus from the crafting system, retrieving the gauntlet back into the boy’s inventory, and without another moment’s wait, he’d equipped it over his right hand, carefully feeling its insides and confirming that crossing his thumb behind the pinkie still successfully loaded another golden arrow onto the top of the gauntlet, while his left hand went over the outer structure, checking for cracks, but nothing seemed to be out of order.
Now looking at it from up close, he reckoned it to be rather fascinating. A gauntlet-shaped weapon entirely made out of so-called ‘black-gold’, with the ammo itself being made of actual, shimmering gold… It was certainly not something you’d often get to see in your lifetime, if ever.
(Well, that definitely checks out, at least.)
He rotated his arm, taking a hard look at it all, from top to bottom. Just as Akane had said, there didn’t seem to be any holes or misplaced parts. The liquid spear had been rebuilt to perfection. If he could dare to say as much, it looked almost better now than before the mobs had blown it up a few hours back.
“Nice...”
“So, are we done already?” asked Suzuka, ignoring the weapon altogether. “If there’s nothing else left to do, we should get going!”
Akane, on the other hand, seemed decently interested in it as well, passing a hand over it in awe.
Since she’d been a part of Pizza’s forces, he figured she would have come in contact with one of these before, though…
Well, it could be she’d just never actually used one, since she’d likely only ever been a part of the lower ranks.
“So. How is it, big bro?” she turned to him, grinning from ear to ear.
“Fits like a glove.” he nodded. “Let’s move.”
Storing it back into his inventory, he turned to the exit. Suzuka led their way out of the shop, staring anxiously at the streets surrounding them as they moved toward the city’s outer limits, ignoring the parades which still went on regardless of them.
“Something wrong, matchsticks?” muttered the boy.
She was acting pretty weird. Well, weirder than usual anyway.
“Matchsticks?”
Since Suzuka hadn’t even bothered to answer him, staring intermittently at the people and props surrounding them as if trying to burn them all down with her glare alone, he called out to her once again, giving her a tap on the shoulder. She jumped in place, lips quivering, and turned towards him, with that very same lour, which sent a shiver down his spine.
“W-W-What is it now, master!?!?!”
“Hey… Are you okay? Oh, don’t tell me…! Has it been seven days already!?”
“That’s not funny, Master…” she sighed, letting her shoulders down tiredly. “Something’s not right! It feels like somebody’s watching us… Somewhere…”
“...”
He wondered. As far as he knew, those guys in the suits should be the only ones chasing after them. As far as he’d seen, they probably weren’t well known for their subtlety, either. Haruto looked around, himself. But he couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary, aside from the ongoing festivities and the confusion from the helplessly packed streets. He didn’t notice anyone in particular paying them any more attention than usual, though.
“... I don’t really see anything. Are you sure you’re not just being a bit too paranoid? I mean, it’s one thing to be on the lookout, but don’t just go imagining things that aren’t actually here, matchsticks…”
“Hey, you’ve got to listen to me, Master! I know when I’m being watched. It’s not an easy feeling to forget when you’ve got two factions running after you at the same time, alright?”
“Fine, fine.” he acquiesced, resigned. “Akane, keep an eye out.”
The smaller girl nodded, moving closer to him, gripping his sleeve tightly.
“What? Don’t you have any weapons or something?”
“Not really…” she tittered awkwardly. “The only thing I got left from that last race was money and a few scraps.”
“I see… Stay close, then.”
“Don’t get distracted.” Suzuka reminded them, with another stern look. “I don’t know where exactly they’re hiding, but there’s definitely someone here. I’m sure of it now.”
She went for her skill toggle, though didn’t activate it just yet, simply keeping it near her index finger, next to her waist.
He didn’t really get it. As far as he knew, they should be able to spot any hostiles coming from miles away. The mobs would stand out way too much against all the bright colors and bizarrely dressed people walking around.

Pagat City looked as peaceful as ever. Loud, but peaceful. There shouldn’t be anything out to get them around there, as far as he knew.
But, then again, matchsticks was the seasoned cyberacer here. He’d seen what Tony Pizza’s forces were capable of before. Even if they could hold their own against three or four of them, that didn’t mean they’d be safe no matter what. Treading carefully was the best option.
They moved slowly towards the outskirts of the city, always keeping a careful eye on their surroundings. They never spotted anything of notice, nevertheless.
As the three had previously discussed, their primary goal, now that their repairs were all made and provisions replaced, would be to get back on the road and chase after Suzuka’s loot as soon as they could.
If those guys were determined enough to keep on chasing them around like this, they would certainly have the persistence to try to trace Suzuka’s steps back to where she originally stored the stolen goods on their own, as well. The sooner he got his hands on it all and managed to figure out what that crazy regional lord was getting all bothered about, the better.
As they moved through the sidewalk and along one of Pagat’s main roads, he’d finally managed to spot the elevated speedway it would eventually connect to above them, spiraling upwards from there behind a few tall buildings in the distance. As they moved further along, people would start to disperse more and more, as the three of them were actually starting to stray away from the ‘festive area’, so say.
Soon enough, the roads would be just empty enough that he could send out his newly repaired car without worrying about crushing any of the old airheads dancing and chattering about. Then, they’d be properly on their way.
He gave a glance at it, at the top of his inventory.
The display model that’d been made available to him made him pretty sure the car would hold on better this time, although the actual upgrades had been minimal. If nothing else, he was at least sure a bunch of sharp glass wouldn’t be able to stab it from below anymore. The old guy from the shop had, between a few hallucinated shouts threatening him not to take advantage of ‘the kid’, informed him he’d installed ‘grav-balancing gears’ between the steel-plating as well, ensuring the extra weight wouldn’t affect the Midnight Gale’s speed or handling.
After advancing a little while longer, they’d stopped just two corners short of the road’s sudden shift in direction.
The streets around them, now, were completely empty. Not a soul was in sight. No partying families, no cars moving in or out of the elevated path. Nothing.
“Alright, this should be good enough.” he nodded, moving his thumb up to retrieve their car.
Before clicking it, however, he noticed Suzuka had suddenly tensed up again.
“Where are you!?” she yelled.
Both he and Akane turned to the redhead, then looked around themselves, now utterly baffled.
“There’s nobody here. Nobody anywhere.” the boy said.
“There is.” she insisted, turning away from Haruto. “Show yourself!!”
The three of them stood alone, right in the middle of the road. There was no one else. There was no possible way there could be anyone else.
Haruto glanced around some more. The buildings, roofs, alleys… All deserted. At first, he’d thought he was just being careless, and not paying as much attention as he needed to his surroundings, considering how often the bright neon lights and shouts of the people around them would get in the way, obfuscating whatever could be hiding out there.
But now, he was absolutely sure of it. No one was showing up. Suzuka was probably just imagining things. They waited a few seconds more, seeing if anything would come out to greet them. But, as expected, the silence between them remained. They were the only ones there.
“See, matchsticks? We’re on our own.” he shrugged, trying to placate the redhead, who was still as jumpy as ever. “So let’s just please stop looking for snipes and get out here alre–?”
“Assigned skill activated: Axis Travel.”
The announcer’s deep, grueling voice had suddenly echoed around the three, the same instant all hairs had stood up at the back of Haruto’s neck.
But there was nobody there. They turned around, frantically, the three of them, but they could see no one.
(Where? Where are they!? If there’s no one in sight, then–)
He blinked once.
Only once, and it had been enough.
They were alone, the three of them. There was no one else in that place aside from them.
And then he had blinked.
And then, there was a fourth person.
A pair of long, crimson ribbons waved faintly, sluggishly, as though attempting to grab hold of the redhead. Swallow her whole.
Standing right behind Suzuka, a slim, slithering figure, clad in black.
In its slender, high-raised hand, the glint of a sharp silver blade caught the his eye.
And before he could give so much as a word of warning, the blade had descended upon the girl's head.
