T/N Warning . This chapter not related to main plot

As usual, Chenice runs to the house of her grandmother who lives in a house on a hill.

She carries water and takes care of her grandmother, who lives alone and has a limp.

It is her mother's job to take care of her.

Chenice always went to her grandmother's house once in a while.

Today, her brother had been messing around with her since morning, so she had to wait until it was too late to leave the house to deal with him.

(Grandma, I'm sure she's waiting for me.)

"Grandma."

When she opened the door with a gasp, she was not there in the darkened house.

Instead, one boy was there.

He was about the same age as Chenice, or maybe one year younger. He was sitting awkwardly in front of the fireplace.

'Who are you?"

 Chenice asked.

It was no wonder that her voice was filled with suspicion. It was a boy she had never seen before.

"What's wrong with grandmother?"

The boy shook his head in confusion.

"She's not here."

"Why?"

"Who are you?'

He asks the question in reply.

The boy is staring at Chenice's face.

"Who are you?"

" Chenice says, stepping back.

"I am..."

Just as the boy spoke, the wood in the fireplace crackled and exploded with a loud bang.

It was the end of the line.

Chenice turned and rushed out of the house.

(Where had the grandmother gone? Who was that boy?)

As she ran, her vision began to fill with tears.

 (I'm scared.)

 (I'm scared.)

 (Mother.)

When she arrived home, her mother welcomed her gently as usual.

"What's wrong, Chenice? You look so upset."

'Mother, I went to grandmother's house on the hill.'

Chenice caught her breath, looked up at mother and said.

'Grandma was gone, and in her stead was a boy I didn't know."

'Oh my.'

 Her mother's eyes widened.

"Who could it be? I don't think I've ever heard that old lady had a grandson."

"But he was a strange boy. He was sit by the fire without permission."

It's been cold lately."

Chenice felt annoyed by her mother's fluent speech, and she intensified her tone.

"It's strange, . When I asked him who he was, he didn't answer. On the contrary, he asked me who I was."

"Yes."

The mother raised her eyebrows as if she was troubled.

"But what should I do? I can''t go to that house to check on her."

That's right. She can't go to the house.

"That''s a problem. ......"

 Chenice said, interrupting her mother.

" I'll go back and ask the boy where grandmother is."

"Don't be too reckless."

 She was still worried.

"Don't worry. There is only one boy, and if he looks dangerous, I will run away right away."

With these words, Chenice ran out of the house again.

She ran out of breath to run up the hill to grandmother's house.

(I wonder if the boy is still there.)

The door she had left open earlier was closed.

That meant that the boy must still be inside.

Chenice opened the door with all her might.

Sunlight shines through the dark room.

 No one was there.

...... "grandmother,.

She called out to the inside of the house.

It was not a big house. Even if she didn't check, she could somehow tell that there was no one around.

Still, Chenith called out again .

"Grandmother, are you there? it's me. It's Chenice."

"Grandmother's not here."

A sudden voice behind her made Chenice literally skip.

"Hi."

It was the boy from before.

He was holding some firewood in his hand.

He was using grandmother's firewood without her permission.

The surprise, along with the anger that welled up in Chenice's heart, made her jump.

"Who are you?"

 Chenice shouted.

Where did you take my grandmother? What are you doing here?

The boy walked past Chenice with the same annoyed look on his face as before and entered the room.

'Don't go in there without permission," This is grandmother's house."

Chenice was really angry at the boy for acting as if it was his own house.

"Get out, . Where is grandmother?

The boy slowly turned his head to face Chenice, after putting some firewood on the ground.

He had an indescribable expression on his face.

She is gone,"

 The boy said.

"I'm sure she's been gone for days. I went around to the back of the house and found out. The way the house was crumbling, it must have been infested with monsters, which are not common in this area. They don't come out around here that often. It was just bad luck."

 (What?)

 (What is this boy saying?)

Chenice did not understand what the boy was saying.

What are you talking about? I just met her the day before yesterday.

Hearing this, the boy again looked indescribable.

"That can't be true. You can tell by the way this house is ruined".

The boy held out his hands.

Then Chenis noticed for the first time that the house was crumbling.

The house is damaged here and there,"

The floor was covered with dust.

The fireplace in front of the boy was lit, but cracked here and there.

:What is this?:

 Chenice backed away.

 I don't understand.)

 "What is happening?"

(I was with grandmother the day before yesterday.)

Chenice, lost for words, turned around and started to run.

 (I'm scared.)

 (I'm afraid of that boy.)

(I don't know what he is saying)

 (Mother.)

( Help me, Mother.)

But Chenice stops in the middle of the road.

She doesn't know the way home.

It's the same road she always takes.

There shouldn't even be a sharp fork in the road.

(I don't know which way to go.)

Chenice, who was at a loss, continued walking aimlessly and found herself in front of her grandmother's house again.

"You came back."

The boy was waiting for her in front of the house.

.".....I can't go home."

At Chenice's words, the boy had that look on his face again.

I just happened to pass by on my way. ......."

 The boy hesitated a little.

"An abandoned house."

"I thought it was better than camping out. I was going to spend the night and then leave."

 The boy looked at Chenis.

"Then I saw you."

Then he turned away from Chenis.

"You too ......."

The boy hesitated a little again.

"Have you been killed here, too?"

 (I've been killed.)

The moment she heard that word, the memory of that day flashed through Chenice's mind.

(I had a little trouble with my brother Phil, and I was late leaving home.)

(I ran all the way here, opened the door, and there was grandmother.)

 (grandmother.)

'Yes, right."

 Chenice muttered.

'I was killed here. By a monster. along grandmother."

Tears flowed naturally.

' I died here."

The boy was staring at Chenice.

Chenice finally understood the meaning of that look.

It was the look of someone mourning the dead.

"I was going to leave tomorrow."

The boy looked at Chenice's tears and said,

"But then I met you."

There was a dark light in the boy's eyes.

I can usually tell where the monsters are likely to live from the terrain around here,"

Before she knew it, the boy had a sword in a scabbard in his hand.

It was a very long sword, disproportionate to the boy's height, like a sword that an adult would use.

I will defeat the monster that killed you and grandmother.

The boy seemed to be speaking without emotion, trying not to show any emotion.

"I'm sorry. I can only do that."

The boy bowed his head to Chenis.

"I'm sorry."

Chenice remained silent and stood in front of the boy. Tears flowed uncontrollably.

Suddenly, she felt someone calling her.

 A gentle voice.

 It was her mother's voice.

 (Oh, I see.)

 Chenice understood.

(I can't stay here anymore because I realized that I died.)

I have to go somewhere.

The boy is looking at Chenice. With a pained expression on his face.

"Hey."

Chenice said to the boy. Tears were no longer flowing.

'Tell me your name. And ......."

Chenice felt her body enveloped in light. A very warm light.

"I want to see your smile."

)Not such a sad, painful expression.)

(I'm sure he's a very nice and cool boy when he smiles.)

...... "Almark."

 The boy said.

"My name is Almark."

. He smiled at HE , though it was a forced smile, like a crying smile.

"I am Chenice."

 Chenice said.

"Thank you, Almark. Thank you for mourning me."

And Chenice vanished in the light.

Almark scratched embers from the fireplace and put on his cloak.

(How many more times do I have to feel like this?)

 )The Nork Academy of Magic.)

 (It's too far away.)

But Almark, who left the abandoned house with a long sword on his back, already had the appearance of a fighter.
