"......"

At Armark's quiet, Morgen hurriedly said ,

"You must think it's just another stupid rumor I'm spreading!”

"There is no basement in this dormitory."

"I heard it from one of the guys in the first grade ! It could be hidden somewhere."

"You mean like a secret room?"

“Yes, a secret place. In that secret place, only Maia knows about, she locks up those children who disobey her.”

" Have any students gone missing from this academy?"

"Well, no, not after I entered the school,.......

'That's enough. We're certainly the senior students now . Mr. Cassis, ......, right? Let's just keep working until Cassis gets better.

'Yes."

But Almark is still left with a question.

"Even though ......, we're the only third-year students left, aren't we? I think there were others."

'Half of the ones left are third-year students,'.... was just have a bad luck."

 Morgen shook his head.

"We just happened to be in Maia's line of sight,"

Hmmm......."

Almark is not satisfied.

"I don't ...... get it. ......"

I”'m not convinced. Why don't we go to Ms. Maia and ask her to let one of the other kids do it? Or do you want to tell Maia, at that age, to let you do it alone?"

"...... Okay,. I won't ask again. I'll do it, Morgen."

Armark gave up, and together he and MoRgen went to the tool room, took out equipment, and headed for the third-floor stairs.

Almark watched in amazement as Morgen skillfully repaired the broken wooden handrail with equipment.

"That's great, Mogen," Almark said.

'Well, I am the son of a lumberjack. I'm not a lumberjack by profession, but I know how to work with wood."

Mogen replies with a satisfied look on his face.

"You're the son of a mercenary, so you're just as good in a fight."

“...... Well, I guess that's the way things are."

Almark was strangely convinced and stared at the tool Mogen was handling without getting tired of it.

The next day, after breakfast, they began to show up at the manager's office to be told what to do for the day.

Maia was waiting for them in the office, and as soon as she saw their faces, she spoke to them.

"You're here. I've have an errand for you"

and told them to do their work.

Most of these errands were minor, such as making simple repairs or picking up daily necessities at the school building, but there were times when things would go poorly and it would take half the day to complete the task.

At first, Almark was a bit reluctant to take on this task as a way to keep Morgen company, but it was surprisingly exciting for his daily routine, and he gradually began to like the job.

Most of the daily tasks did not take much time, did little to interfere with his meditation or reading, and he enjoyed watching Morgen's lively work and trying to imitate it himself.

It was true that Maia had a lot task for them , and she still had never said thanks to either of them, but he had gotten used to the way she said things, and Almark, like Mogen, had come to think, "Oh, that's the kind of person he is."

According to Morgen, the other third-year students who had been at the academy since the first year had already reached that point.

(If someone has to do it, why not us?)

That's the way Almark feels about his work now.

“If I don't become a magician, maybe we could do something like this,"

Morgen said.

“That's great for you, but I can't do anything,"

With a shrug of the shoulders, Almark replied, to him

Almarck thought he was good with tools, but he admitted that when it came to working with tools, Mogen was completely superior.

"So you'll be my bodyguard,"

"Mogen said smiling at him.

"You'll have to protect me,"

"Why would you need a bodyguard for such job?"

Almarc replied with a wry smile.

The two had finished breakfast and were on their way to the manager's office.

'What kind of work do you think we'll be doing today?"

'I don't really care, but I wonder if Mr. Cassis has gotten better from his cold yet.'

Arriving in front of the caretaker's office while talking about such things, Almark knocks on the door.

Maia didn't answer just because he knocked, but if he entered without knocking, that would have made her angry, and they decided to knock and then enter without waiting for an answer.

"We' ll enter!'

They opened the door and went inside.

"Oh, you're here."

Maia glanced at them from the comfortable chair at the back of the room.

"That's what you''re doing today," she said".

On the table he points to is an old key.

Almark takes it in his hand. It is rather large and heavy for a child's hand.

"Is this the key to ......?"

I"t's a key to the basement."

 Maia said casually.

 Morgen shouted,"Oh my God!

"It's finally come to this ! The basement."

'What are you talking about?"

 Maia stared at Morgen.

Maia glanced at Mogen.

"

Isn't it about time you got back from vacation? Then you'll have to take out the signs in the basement."

"The signs?"

 Morgen asked.

“You know the martial arts tournament is coming up soon after the vacations. We're going to have a lot of visitors for that. We need to put up signs around the dormitory so people don't get lost. I store them in the basement."

Morgen heard this and checked with fear.

"There is no basement in this dormitory."

"There is, that's why there' key , "

 Maia sniffed in disgust.

"What have you been telling me all this time?"

"Where is this basement?"

 Almark asked.

"At least there are no steps down from the first floor in the dormitories,"

"What, you don't know? You kids must not be out of the house. You see that little door on the wall behind the plants? That's the entrance to the storage room."

'The storage room?'

Morgen asked.

Isn't that the basement?"

"It doesn't matter which one it is . It's a storage room in the basement."

"Is it a storage room, ? Was the secret basement a storage room?"

"Who told you it was a secret?"

"No, no one said that ."

" There's a sign in a wooden box in the back of the room . Listen to me, you have to bring every single one of them. There's no extra wood in there. If you are missing even one piece, you won't be able to put together the sign, so don't forget it."

Maia reminded them with a fearful look on her face.

, "Now, if you understand, just go. I'm busy here.'

Maia then started knitting as usual.

'Let's go, Morgen."

Armark suggested Morgen to leave the room.
